There have been quite a few comparisons made between Burn Notice and MacGyver with many people calling it an updated version of MacGyver.

Now it would seem they have taken another step in MacGyver's footprints by leaving out key steps and components of their own MacGyverisms to insure viewers don't hurt themselves if they try recreating the tricks seen in the show according to the Hollywood Reporter. In there report they talk to series creator Matt Nix and ask him about some specific tricks seen in the show.

Does this imply that the directors/writers actually know the key ingredients into making a lethal makeshift weapon? I would assume they would, otherwise the show would be sci-fi.

This doesn't leave out the genius behind MacGyver's plots, plans and schemes though, which depending on the type of viewers, is a good or a bad thing. I learned a lot of ways to manipulate the enemy thanks to MacGyver.
