Airdate: Mar. 9, 2018 Writer: Nancy Kiu Director: Steve Adelson Guest Cast: David Piggott (Sergei Neilschuk) , David Garelik (Mikhail) , Neal Kodinsky (Dmitry Pavlovich) Martin Harris (Virgil Kahn) , Gleb Kaminer (Thug)
Mac, Jack and Riley set out to find a mobster-turned-informant after he’s kidnapped and taken to Chernobyl by an international crime boss who’s worried he will deliver incriminating information to the CIA while Bozer struggles to keep a secret from Matty.
Have we seen anything about this episode?? I hold no high hopes for it because I can honestly say I have disliked almost every episode that Nancy Kiu has ever written. I was hoping she was done for the season. AND I know she is an executive producer but I have never liked her take on the relationships when she writes. But who knows? Maybe I will be pleasantly surprised. I think since the horrific Muscle Car episode I have been like a woman scorned.

So... I guess no one's interested in discussing this one right now?
I thought it was okay, but not excellent. One thing I found interesting was hearing Mac tell Matty, "Well, your orders are WRONG!" I know he was feeling upset, but I thought it was actually pretty cool to see Mac defy orders in favor of doing the right thing. Something the original would have done.
I'm just impatiently waiting for Mac and the gang to finally confront Matty on what she knows. I'm figuring they'll probably wait until closer to the season finale, but it's getting tiring. I thought maybe they ALL were going to confront her when they were in the War Room in the conclusion. Matty can be pretty fierce, but I wonder what would happen if she was ganged up on. Cue the drama

Well, I just finished watching it. I don't have cable (or regular TV), so I'm at the mercy of whenever it pops up on the CBS website.
This one was pretty good, I think. I've always been interested in things like Chernobyl, but that's because Urban Exploring is a major interest for me. I've always has a weird interest in abandoned places. The setting alone peaked my interest.
Story line was okay. Pretty typical.
Nice to see some defiance in Mac. This is pretty much in character of the original Mac, as he would normally be defiant about something he didn't like and didn't really hide it either that he was on to that person. I'm still waiting for the classic MacGyver "I'm so done with your crap" eyeroll. RDA has some of the best facial expressions... period. lol
I am very interested to see where they're going with the Matty story line, but I'm gonna call it... I betcha it's gonna be Matty is still a good guy, lying to Mac because she was trying to protect him because his father got himself involved with something he wasn't supposed to.
Could I be wrong? Sure! But, I wanna see if I'm right.
Now, if it were me... I'd throw the audience for a loop and have his mother still be alive, and she's the reason his father got caught up in some government conspiracy. They never did explain how she died anyway, right?
Would make for some GREAT drama. But... that's just me.

Plot twist: Matty is Mac's mom. Okay, I doubt it, but it would be a great twist.
Funny thing is, when CBS advertised this episode as available for streaming, they used a picture from "Murdoc + Handcuffs" instead. Might be a mistake?

Two more thoughts: I loved how Bozer told Jack, "You broke Mac."
And it was dumb how Jack's sneeze is what gave them away. WHY did they find that suspicious? Unless it merely caught their attention, then they saw the blood on his leg.

Another one that started like: this is going to be lame but turned out alright in the end. Jack was more annoying than I ever knew. He was complaining the whole time and the sneezing wasn't that funny. Giving them away more the once in one day for a seasoned field operative... If he was working with a cold that would've been different. And not one word from either Mac or Reilly telling him to cut it out. I was glad Mac finally defied Matty and it was different to see that she admitted he was right and made the right choice. I've seen many moments in the show that made me thought if this was the original Mac, he would've simply turned off the comms for the rest of the mission.
The setting was alright. An episode in Chernobyl was great but again the puns in location descriptions were not needed. "Chernobyl: When The Party Was Over." Really? 31 people died instantly when the plant exploded. Would they make a pun about the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombs if they ever set an episode there? You may call me touchy but that was like trying to be funny when you shouldn't.
What I also didn't like was that Jack stopped Mac from confronting Matty at the end. That would've been the perfect moment to clear a few things out especially after he defied her.
Jack was more of a hindrance this time then Bozer. And maybe this review seems bad but it's not. The Chernobyl setting was a great idea but Jack was really annoying.

Right from the start
I still don't really understand why people think that
I think it's much more likely that Mac's mom was killed (seems like a typical revelation used for a Midseason or a Season Finale) than that Matty is his biological mother.
