But we all have our sins. It's just hard to imagine to see him putting up another one in between takes. Guess he must've had his reasons to quit. This was shared on the MacGyver fanpage on Facebook. I was surprised to say the least but, well we're all human. The fact he quit and never touched it again afterwards means he earns the respect more.

The first time seeing the pilot, I wondered if RDA smoked because puffing on several cigarettes at once without coughing in that elevator shaft seemed unreal to me (I've never smoked a single cigarette in my life, so I couldn't tell).
But I've never seen any pictures of him smoking, and forgot about it. A few years ago, I've was surprised to learn that RDA used to smoke. I think he talked about it in an interview once and he smokes in one of the few movies I've seen (the one where he played a blind soldier coming back from Vietnam?).

Yeah, the movie you're referring to is Ordinary Heroes... great movie actually.
I remember hearing he smoked for a short while and then quit, but I didn't know for how long and why he quit. But, that doesn't surprise me. My parents smoked back in the 70's. They quit around the time my oldest sister was born.
I never smoked either, or did drugs. I do drink, but it's very rare. I can count the number of times I've been drunk on one hand, and I've never been so drunk that I can't remember what happened the next day.
I'm not sure how true it is, but I also believe that RDA was a heavy drinker/partier.

I'm not at all surprised. It was cool to smoke back in the 70's (even early 80's) and yes RDA has openly admitted in interviews that he was a bit of a wild drinker and partier back in the day. In the interview I heard it sounded like he was talking about the early MacGyver years, but can't be sure.

Both my parents smoked for years, and my mother didn't even like it. She smoked because "everyone smoked in the 70s" and stopped about 20 years ago without any problems or cravings. My dad enjoyed it, though and just stopped last year. We begged and nagged for years for him to stop but it took the first signs of a heart attack and an insisting doctor to finally quit. Well, better late than never, I guess.
RDA talks quite jovial about drugs and partying and often changes the topic after making statements like stopping because he "liked it too much". I'm pretty sure he had more than a drink and a casual joint but everyone did it back then and people didn't really know that much about longterm effencts.
I work at the Swiss Cancer League and it's a sad fact that death statistics because of Lung Cancer in women are rising fast - a deadly "leftover gift" in women who started smoking in the 60ies and 70ies

Well, like I read it now, he just did his share of living. The phase of experimenting and partying we all go through when we're young. It's a time everyone should be entitled to before growing up.
As for myself, I've done my part on that too. Did some experimenting on smoking too but from the very beginning I didn't like it and never did it afterwards. Drugs I'm not interested in at all. And drinking... I can enjoy a good beer from time to time. Last few years it's mostly after gym when we have a drink with the group. But the drinking as I used to with my friends has become an exception. If I don't go along with the group from the gym I can even do two weeks without drinking. And if it wasn't for the one bottle of wine I got left from last Christmas I wouldn't even have any alcohol at all.
Anyway, didn't mean to start a discussion on our drinking or partying habits, just wanted to share that picture. If RDA saw this, he'd probably explains it as well as that it was when times were different. Another life even.
And yes you're right, Jedi and Kiwi. The poster of the picture on Facebook did say this was from Ordinary Heroes and the early years of MacGyver.

What, are we all coming clean here???? I took a haul off of a joint while on a vacation to Jamaica once upon a time. Other than that I fully adhere to the Church of Mac, and have no other vices .... other than the odd craft beer, cuppa, and cheeseburger.

I smoked for a while in the 80s/early 90s, and it was one of the hardest things I've ever tried to quit. Both of my parents smoked, and that contributed to how my mother died. I admire Mac for hanging the habit up, as it's no mean feat to quit! Like Joe, my habit now is the daily cuppa, chocolate milk and a (yummy!!) cheeseburger (or two)!

After the US banned cigarette ads on TV there has been a insidious movement by tobacco to influence the TV and movie industry. The idea that people seen on screen smoking will give tacit endorsement to the act and of course there is the money that flows in to productions quid pro quo. It is standard question on the boiler plate form for extra auditions "will you smoke if needed for the role?" It implies that smokers have a better chance at getting the job. In a nut shell of you want to be in front of a camera you might be pressured to smoke. It's understood that in todays modern world we are exposed to all sorts of chemicals every day but it is another thing to ask a person to risk addiction for a job. Should tobacco be a occupational hazard? I don't think so but that's just me. Do I smoke? No. So Mr Anderson smoked, he's human, not a saint. There are some actors whose work I love whose politics I hate. I have learned to accept that the world is less than perfect and try to make the most of it so my surviving friends and family can have nice place to live when I'm gone. One person smoking is not going to spoil the big picture.

I am beyond shocked. Next, someone will be suggesting that he's not a virgin.
Why not? You can date women withouth sleeping with them and having kids without having sex
I would beg to differ! Any normal sexually mature individual knows that if you love your partner, and find him/her attractive...sex comes naturally. For example, if a couple has been dating for roughly five years without having any sex...you can bet your bottom dollar there is some or other problem.
If (he) should have any medical conditions such as erectile dysfunction, then it would make perfect sense as to why the couple has purposely abstained from engaging in any sexual activity, but generally, if they are two healthy individuals then I see no issue with them having sex.
Also, acknowledge that in the modern world sexuality is much more accepted and contraception is readily available. So you do not always have to worry about pregnancy.
Sex is a natural desire and is meant to be part of the human experience and give couples a sense of fullfilment! It is necessary for a well-rounded healthy relationship. This is just my point of view!

I do know a few people who identify as asexual. For them, being asexual is natural.
That said, none of the evidence suggests that RDA would fit into that category.
On another note, I really, really like the name Annarose.
In "I'll Scream Later", Matlin states that only hours after them meeting for the first time, RDA sticks a message under her hotel room door saying .. "Marlee it was great meeting you, and I have one question - Do you want to go to Hawaii with me?"
Now, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer on dating protocol, but I would tend to call this request more 'fast' than 'slow' given the length of their relationship at the time.

Uh oh - that's another downside of being famous: Everyone can read the story of your dating life in other famous people's memoirs
Good thing she only writes nice stuff about him
