| Norwegian tribute band, Phoenix Foundation’s first album of songs based on MacGyver episodes is now available for download on iTunes. With this release we get our first view of the album cover of the aptly named Troubleshooter album, with its strip of duct tape proclaiming the title submitted by fans of the 80’s and 90’s show in an album naming competition run by the ban. The album consists mostly of songs based on episodes from the first 2 seasons of the show, with the exception being "Mountain of Youth" referring to the 7th season episode. http://itunes.apple.com/no/artist/phoenix-foundation/id157406021  |

Egh. I'll give these guys a listen, see what they're like, but mp3 sounds pretty awful if you have a good audio system in your car and really like to crank it up.  |

Do you mean MP3s in general sound awful, or just this band's MP3s? If MP3s in general sound awful you to, there might be something wrong with either your equipment or how you're burning them onto a CD. At 196kb, there really should be VERY minimal difference between a CD and a MP3 (unnoticable to most people, and even to audiophiles, it won't sound "pretty awful," unless, like I said, your equipment isn't working properly.) |

| My equipment is working properly. Most of my audio stuff is higher end, not too outrageous, but not what you buy at walmart or best buy either. If songs are done on mp3s highest quality setting, then they arn't too bad, but most of what you download online isn't even close. But it's also kind of silly on it's highest setting because the files wind up being nearly as large as FLAC lossless, which is what I use. I see the band offers their music in FLAC format on their website, but not the new album. I'm sure it's coming soon, they probably just concentrate on what's downloaded the most first. Or maybe I'll pick up the cd whenever that comes out. ::shrugs:: I have a pretty decent audio system I installed in my car and turn it up ridiculously loud, so that's probably why mp3 bugs me. It can sound garbled, the bass isn't quite right and it has this funny metallic ringing sound, that's the best I can describe it. I never have those complaints with cds or FLAC. |

| I find this to be a very interesting discussion,but really don't see much logic in Wheeljack's claims. I agree that Mp3's at a rate of 128kbps does sound awful and I agree with Miasma that the casual listener would not notice the difference in an Mp3 consisting of 192kbps. I work with audio on almost a daily basis in my recording studio,using some very transparent professional audio monitoring systems,and the only difference noticeable to me...is that when I am rendering my recordings down to MP3's,I have considerable more headroom when using bit rates of 256kb or more. So in essence,I can achieve higher volume without any distortion at these higher bit rates,but still no noticeable loss in fidelity. I am using professional studio monitors,not a hi-fi system.Hi-fi entertainment systems-by their very nature,have a colored or "sweet" sound,which are designed to appease the listener with exaggerations of sounds i.e. equalizers & over sized speaker cabinets & such. Whereas studio monitors are specifically designed to represent the audio at face value,thereby producing a much more accurate depiction of the source material. All this being said,if there was anything beyond a very marginal difference in audio quality between a high bit rate Mp3 & a WAV file,I would notice it. Some people swear by the quality of Ogg Vorbis over MP3 and at one point I did agree with that....that is until I upgraded my recording platform & discovered that Ogg Vorbis has nothing over MP3,whatsoever. It's interesting to me that I never hear anyone complaining about the audio quality of a movie on DVD,despite the fact that the audio is obviously compressed on a DVD(otherwise the movie would not fit on the DVD). But then of course,I don't listen to music at ridiculously high volumes-which doesn't seem practical in any application,whatsoever. This is why I NEVER go to a music concert without ear plugs-because for one thing,I need my hearing & secondly,regardless of the audio system,music just isn't as articulate at excessive volumes(when the decibel level is overwhelming). To say that Mp3's sounds awful,simply because one prefers to listen to music at unnecessarily high volumes,is tantamount to saying that a commercial jet plane in a school cafeteria sounds awful. |
