What did everyone think of the season 2 premiere?

Overall, I thought it was pretty good-- plenty of action, and I liked how Bozer and Riley were kept to the side, allowing Mac, Jack and the new woman (whose name I can't remember) to handle the action. I really think that works best for this show. And I think the new woman will fit in well (I'm so glad they didn't make her another annoyingly comedic character!)

I also liked that they planted the seeds for two of the season's long-running plots.

My complaints are that the MacGyverisms are still being done WAY too quickly. Mac usually finishes them before I even know what he's doing.Slow it down!! Build some tension, let us see his thought process!
Oh, and that motorcycle chase was too obviously greenscreen.

But yeah, overall, a solid start to the season (provided you accept this show for what it is and aren't still clinging to the wish that it will perfectly replicate the original series.)

I thought it was pretty good.

I agree the motorcycle scene, and the plane Riley and Bozer were in, were really fake looking.

I assume the motorcycle scene was an easter egg for the motorcycle scene from Dalton, Jack of Spies? Probably loosely. I still love the look on RDA's face as they pull out. The look of fear. lol

Samantha Cage is a nice add on. I'm assuming she's there as a love interest for Mac? Mac seems to like her pretty well.

However, they need to understand that there are TOO MANY PEOPLE on this show. I still completely agree with RDA. This is a cop show with the MacGyver title. This team thing doesn't work for the show at all. I agree with RDA too that there's too much shooting going on... I understand it's probably one of those sad changes that had to be made, but is it really necessary?

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of franchises I love that have character wielding guns... but MacGyver was different. MacGyver hated guns and didn't like violence. For me, that was a nice change from what I was used to. I loved that MacGyver had a high regard for life. It also makes him more relatable because most of us who don't use guns can watch the show and be like... OH! I can do that!

However, I did notice that Mac did take charge a bit in this one over Jack, which was nice to see. Jack has been too dominant, and kinda over-shadowed Mac. So it's nice to see Mac finally show some dominant presence.

RDA always had a nice balance in his MacGyver, because he was a dominant character without being over bearing. Lucas Till can do this. He got enough presence, they just need to utilize it better. I really like Lucas Till though. He's growing on me like a fungus. XD

The two things going for the show right now, for me personally, is the hunt for Mac's father and Murdoc. I love the idea of the watch... though I called it, I knew there was something up about that watch. lol I absolutely love David Dastmalchian, so I'm excited to see more Murdoc.

I kinda feel bad nitpicking the show... but, eh... lol

I guess I'm just biased because I'm an RDA fan. SORRY! lol

The problem I have with Mac's relationship with guns in this show is that the writers didn't really know how to implement that aspect of his character into a modern setting. He doesn't carry a gun, yet he relies on other people to carry them, and that makes Mac seem more like a liability than a hero. The writers should have chosen one direction and stuck with it-- Either (A) Mac is opposed to guns and does not want his friends to use guns to protect him, or (B) Mac is fine with guns, and uses them himself. Instead, the writers chose a middle ground, which just doesn't make much logical sense.

This episode just didn't do anything for me.

Although I found it amusing that the took the "macgyverism parts" out if the openi,g credits and did it as the macgyverism occurred.....

Other than that, this was yawners to me.

Oh man, adding ANOTHER cast member?????

Just comparing 'anything' to the original should be grounds for warfare! blink.gif That quippy, teamish, alignment & rapport is gaggingly overbearing and, in it's own right, often grounds the whole macgyverism raison d'Ítre & magic before it ever conceptualizes/materializes.

Other than that, it's not bad entertainment for a Friday Night death slot. Bozer's reference to the board game 'Clue' was very funny though,,,,,,, if not hard to believe that his rather simpleton/nervous character could ever pull off that last moment intervention and then with such timely humor. hmm.bmp

LoL! Good catch! Yes, you'd never see a hockey player's hockey stick 'propped' up, standoffish like that in a home. Never! Always near the other gear/equipment -often in a hallway closet, laundry room. nook, or cranny, and/or near a exit door because you don't want to drag it through the house when you're tired and preferably at a spot ready and easy to grab for your next game. That's just an (uneasy) tip of the cap and nugget from 'the producers' who (must) read our threads each and every day!!! wink.gif

It was good entertainment for a Season Premiere. Lots of actions and many different locations. Several nods to the original as well. It's still not really MacGyver, though.

Also, too much unnecessary shooting going on for my tastes. The time limit was for saving Diaz only. They still could have sent in the special ops team to catch the bad guys afterwards after grabbing Diaz and escaping. They didn't have to go after the "Ten of Spades" alone.

QUOTE
My complaints are that the MacGyverisms are still being done WAY too quickly. Mac usually finishes them before I even know what he's doing.Slow it down!!  Build some tension, let us see his thought process!

Exactly. I prefer shows being a bit slower paced in general, but it's quite annoying here if you don't get what's actually happening. Especially because they did try to fit in a lot of cool MacGyverisms that you don't see on other shows.

QUOTE
I liked how Bozer and Riley were kept to the side, allowing Mac, Jack and the new woman (whose name I can't remember) to handle the action. True. But we already see the problem with adding another character: Riley and Matty didn't really get to do anything so Cage got enough screentime. If 3 people (Mac, Jack and Cage) are in the field for the A storyline, and 3 people (Bozer, Riley, Matty) at "home" for the B storyline, it will get difficult to grant everyone enough room in the story.

QUOTE
Oh, and that motorcycle chase was too obviously greenscreen.

Yes, it looked too cheap for me. They DID film the stunt sequence in Cuba, so it's a bit sad that the obvious greenscreen parts shot in Atlanta diminish the effort of actually filming there.

I didn't really get that part. Why did they have that plane for an unsanctioned mission? It would have made sense for an official mission, but they never had that kind of gear before and using this kind of plane not only leaves more traces, but also people (e.g. pilots, that tech guy next to Riley) that could get punished for participating.

QUOTE

Yes, I think so! And it's a good idea to implement that specific scene into the reboot; it works well enough in a show set in modern times if you place the location as Cuba.

QUOTE
Samantha Cage is a nice add on.  I'm assuming she's there as a love interest for Mac? Mac seems to like her pretty well.

Mac seemed a bit too awed about her; he must have seen agents like her before if he's a "veteran" soldier and agent.

I think it's interesting how differently people speculate on social media. Many think she's a love interest for Mac, but others think she'll end up with Jack. But since they made her bisexual, she could also end up with Riley tongue.gif

I just hope there won't be any love triangle drama. Gosh, I'd hate that.

QUOTE
However, I did notice that Mac did take charge a bit in this one over Jack, which was nice to see.  Jack has been too dominant, and kinda over-shadowed Mac.  So it's nice to see Mac finally show some dominant presence.

Thought so, too!

On the other hand, I think it's a bit weird that Jack, who Matty praised as being the best agent she has ever known, seems so incompetent at times; especially after working so many years with Mac.

QUOTE
I kinda feel bad nitpicking the show... but, eh... lol

I guess I'm just biased because I'm an RDA fan.  SORRY! lol

Well, it might look as nitpicking to others, but I still think we're quite complimentary about it in here and discuss the pros and cons in a civil manner. It's not all shouty-caps, insults and name-calling.

I spent years in the Twilight Fandom and loved the books, but that doesn't mean I love the books and movies unconditionally. There are major flaws and there's nothing wrong discussing them and pointing out what should have been done instead, no matter if you're a fan or not.

I'm a fan of Original MacGyver, so of course I'm discussing the Reboot as well. Doesn't mean I have to love or hate it completely. I still think the show got a lot better over the course of the 1st Season and I'm curious how the addition of Isabel Lucas is going to change the team dynamics, even though I'm not a fan of adding more regular cast members.

Not bad. I enjoyed it. Good action and locations. And Bozo and Riley kind of in the background, helped de-clutter things a bit.
But.....It looks like that damn AI robot is gonna be a regular on this show. That thing is an annoying counterpoint to an already, somewhat annoying Bozer.
The Bozer character is kinda growing on me though. Hopefully he develops into more than just a goofy comic relief type character over time.

Other than that, I was entertained.

Oh yeah...... we need more SAK action.

And I missed the paperclip art... although Lenkov said we will have that in Season 2 as well, so I'm sure it will come back soon.

Overall I thought it was ok a few minor points of annoyance

1. Lucas Till's Hair IS WAY TO SHORT: seriously how am I the only person bothered by this his hair was perfect in the season 1 opener not to long not to short....

2. I like that riley and Bowzer were only in the episode for 3 scenes honestly the less the better\

3. Cage is cute but I don't see a need for her to be on the team

Positives

1. Till was fantastic

2. the macgyverisms were inventive

3. the overall mystery of Mac's dad is intriguing (personally I hope/pray Mac's dad is what Jack was in the original series always looking for the next golden goose.... actually what is Bruce McGill doing these days..)

overall 7 out of 10 for me

Overall, I loved the episode except for the new agent. Nothing against Isabel Lucas, but I don't see a need for a new character at this point. I am hoping she will grow on me as it appears she will be around for a while.

The action was definitely a step up and I am very intrigued by the storyline of Mac's father. We were also able to get a couple of good bromance moments as well.

My concern is the need to introduce someone new so soon. There are so many stories from season 1 that we could delve into with the characters without adding another to the mix. I understand it may have to do with the workload, but most of her scenes are with Mac and Jack.

Peter is certainly taking a big risk to add someone new as a regular without seeing how the audience will react. Since they are filming episode 9, we can at least be guaranteed she will be here for most of the season. Maybe it's possible it will be like Thornton's character and be written out if the audience doesn't like her and it shows in the ratings.

Can't wait to see next week's episode..

I totally agree on the addition of a new character. I'm so wish she was recurring instead of a regular. It would have been nice to see her in the field occasionally, but I really didn't want her with Mac and Jack all the time. I so wish they would leave Riley and Bozer on the sidelines. Maybe they will tone Mac's 'awe' of her down, because that really was drifting into dreaded Mary Sue territory with him and Jack gushing over her. We get it guys-you want us to like her, too. But like with Bozer last season-pushing her down our throats is NOT the way to go with that. I am trying to be positive and hope this works out and that they find a place for her as well. I loved Mac in this one, and thought Jack was great. I hope the ratings improve as well, although really not bad for a Friday night at 8, I would feel better if we reached the 1.0 mark again.

And I really, really hope that if Mac and Bozer do have a fall out it is not over Cage. I am hoping her remark about not having relations with 'men or women' that she works with means they are not planning a love interest, but I am afraid they might.
Sigh dry.gif

I have read more concerns about the ratings as well, but I think for a Friday it is doing well. Friday at 8pm is notoriously a death slot for most shows, but MacGyver has held its own and even won the timeslot with reruns in the summer. This past week, viewership was #3 of the night so that is good.

Given it was premiere week, I think many may have tuned into the "inhumans" and will return this week to MacGyver. I believe Once Upon a Time premieres this week as well so there could be competition, but I still think for a Friday at 8pm it is doing well, but I am not an expert..

In case you're interested in the Ratings: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/show...-9-29-2017.html

Despite the Premiere of Marvel's "Inhumans" on ABC, MacGyver managed quite decent Ratings and won the 8pm time Slot.

Premiere Ratings usually are almost the same as the last Season Finale. so this was expected. Yet the Ratings have been started to decline a bit over the last episodes, so another Season renewal is not guaranteed yet. Also, there's more competition this year with other Shows being shoved to Friday that haven't even started yet (e.g. Blindspot).

For comparison: Season 1 had an average Rating of 1.08 in the important demo Group of 14-49-year-olds and about 7.7 Million live Viewers. The Season Finale had a Rating of 0.85 and about 6.6 Million live Viewers: https://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/macgyver...s-cancel-renew/

That is impressive.

I was actually surprised Marvel's "Inhumans" didn't pull better numbers. I guess "Once Upon A Time" and "Blindspot" will be the bigger competition.

The Premiere also did quite well in DVR ratings.

Looking at the 3+ Ratings (which means Live viewing + the 3 additional days on DVR), it gained another 0.4 in the important demo group of 18-49 year-olds (+50%) and another 1.6 million viewers (+23%). It didn't so well in demo, but looking at the 3+ total viewers, it faired better than "Law & Order", "How to get away with Murder" or "Lethal Weapon".

Well, I personally have seen Inhumans and its "okay". As much as i moan about the new MacGyver, its still much better to watch than Inhumans. biggrin.gif

I kinda figured they would start showing season 2 reruns once they finally reran "Ruler".

Preliminary Ratings for the Rerun last night: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/the-...-2-17-2018.html

As always, not very spectacular as other reruns on Saturdays. Yet still better than some of other show's premiere ratings tongue.gif

By looking at the tv-schedule, I just happen to know season 2 will be aired immediately after season 1, starting tomorrow. Both seasons will be aired. I still have to begin watching but my digital recorder is getting full and I have so much to catch up with on movies and other shows. Then again, you'll see my reviews when they're written.

I don't mind reading reviews later on. Sometimes, the opinion about an episode changes after some time has passed and you watched other episodes.

I'm much more fond now of the Pilot Episode than when I watched it for the first time. Guess I made some peace with it laugh.gif.

Still haven't watched this one for a second time because I didn't like it that much when seeing it first. Will be interesting to watch it in e.g. half a year and/or after reading other reviews about it.

Season 2 started off pretty good. I was actually kinda hoping this would be the third episode about Murdoc but I'm happy with the opening gambit. It was so cool to see Mac in Cuba. Another country where the original never has been. The Fate of the Furious came to mind and I was kinda hoping on a cool car stunt, unfortunately the scene cut the new opening credits with an immediate new name on it: Isabel Lucas.

With the adding of this Australian actress, I'm getting more and more the feeling this reboot is turning into the Power Rangers. The war room is like the command centre, the computer screen is Zordon, Matty is Alpha 5, Jack is like the White Ranger, Mac is the Red Ranger, Riley is the Yellow Ranger, Bozer is like the Black or Blue Ranger and Samantha Cage is the new Pink Ranger. Just as Catherine Sutherland (also an Australian actress) did who replaced the original Pink Ranger. Just couldn't help to make that comparison.

On Samantha Cage... with her adding to the show I was kind of thinking: Why don't they take The Shield approach? I remember in The Shield almost every season had one guest character that showed up through the season. This was mostly an external and usually an unwanted character: characters who has to keep an eye on the others either to assist or help them or to be an obstacle of some sort. All the more reason I'm thinking that Bozer should've died at the end of the first season so that Samantha Cage could take his place for season 2. Just an idea.

The rescue mission of that Navy Seal was nice. The underwater scooter thingy, Mac made reminded me of the vehicle Lara Croft uses in Tomb Raider III. Only the ending didn't feel right that Mac and Jack got official warnings in their files and it feels even more wrong that Matty apparently keeps back a part of their pay sometimes if they don't listen to her. She might be tough and maybe she can be reasonable but she's not a very good boss. In these moments I kinda miss the warmth, the friendship and the respect MacGyver and Pete had in the original. They always watched each other's backs. And I really doubt Matty would do the things Pete did for the team. You're either in or you're out but if you're out, you're out. No theatrics as we saw in Obsessed when Pete supposedly fired Mac to the enjoyment of others. So she probably wouldn't provide or approve bonuses either. You think she would arrange a student scholar ship for a runaway teen who helped out Mac or buy a new bike for a kid or go kayaking on the river or skiing in the mountains or play hockey after long day of disarming nuclear warheads? I strongly doubt it.

Very great nod to Passages in the final scene. Also this Mac hasn't seen his dad since he was ten. Mac's line from Passages has been echoing through my mind ever since: 'Come on, Harry. I haven't seen dad since I was ten and you know what happened when mom died.'

In all, a good episode and nice introduction of Samantha Cage.
