I've often noticed that purples and browns tend to look like each other and I just read an article about old purple dyes grading into brown.
The Winter 2017 issue of Mount Vernon magazine has an article titled "Stepping Into Life Together: Martha Washington's Wedding Fashion" (pp. 24-27). The shoes the former FLOTUS wore when she wed her second husband, George, look brown now, but 200+ years ago they were bright purple. The article's author, Kimberly S. Alexander, states:
"...Martha's ornate...wedding shoes were an...uncommon purchase, particularly due to the use of a purple satin upper. Very few pre-1780s purple shoes have survived...given the shade's propensity for fading, there may be shoes that were originally dyed the more vibrant hue that now appear as pale lavender or dull brown."
