The first book is titled “MacGyver: Meltdown”, written by Zlotoff and Eric Kelley, and will be released to all formats-- both physical and electronic—come this October.

Though... the comic series was never continued, which was a bummer...

I am super excited for this.. I love the reboot show and I love that I am getting novels from the original time line...

Now if I can just get a video game that takes the stealth elements of the original Macgyver and adds in the ability to work with the environment I would be beyond happy... and the game can exist in either time line not too picky

It should be noted that Lee Zlotoff only has rights to use the characters he created in the pilot episode. Any other character we see in the show belongs to CBS and can't be used by anyone except them - unless you're willing to pay their copyright fees or coarse, and since they have a Prime time show which containes said characters, the fees would likely be large enough to render any project unprofitable.

That leaves Charlie Burke and Gantner though.

And Andy Colson.

They could explore the idea of Andy being Pete undercover - although that would make him blind by now, unless it's a flashback scene. that could be fun.

40 pages in and I'm enjoying this so far. Do have to do a little personal ret-conning though while reading, such as reading "Department of Homeland Security" as "DXS."

Remember this takes place after the series ended so it's not supposed to be the DXS.

Also DXS is Department of external services so they wouldn't be involved in homeland security anyway.

True, but Mac only being 46 and using cell phones and there being a DHS takes some getting used to!

Have to rectify/retcon that in my head somehow.

Call me a cynic, call me skeptical

- does this really feel like this takes place after the series in any real way? Even accounting the legal limits. It seems to me billing it as taking place after the original tv series is really just a marketing angle to get hardcore fans to buy the books.

Unless there are direct references to his past, even vague ones, they are just generic new Macgyver adventures. Similar to how after Ian Fleming died other authors wrote new James Bond books. Where Bond never ages and the stories take place in modern time. But while taking place at the time period the books were released decades after the originals - they still could reference past adventures. These can not even do that.

I did read the Macgyver comic Zlotoff wrote. Which I was not that impressed with. More of a modernizing of the overall premise with little connection to the tv series. That is what this comes of like. But sold as a “sequel” that requires retconning by readers to even make it feel like a true sequel at all....

I was a fan of 2 TV movies. Which take place after the series. Are completely stand alone adventures with no mention of Sam or any appearances of any characters but Mac himself. New standalone adventures can work BUT...

The time period was right. But most of all you had Richard Dean Anderson as Macgyver. They could of screwed up a lot of continuity in the writing and it would not have mattered. You do not get that with book.

If they could get RDA to read an audiobook of these I would buy them instantly. Regardless of details.

Sounds like you're more of an RDA fan than a MacGyver fan. In which case no book is going to be satisfactory.

It's worth noting that Eric (the co-author) is a member of the Facebook Fan Club and has been seeking guidance and feedback on the book in preparation for the next one.

In the Comic books Mac was on a Phoenix assignment and he was talking to Pete on the phone at the end of it so that tied in to series.

Maybe I came off too harsh. I was just suspicious of how these books were described from the beginning. Than to read someone say they had to do mental retconning to make it fit with the show added to that.

I forgot about the references to Pete and Phoenix in the comic. I will have to dig up my copy. It shows how unmemorable it was to me.

It’s not about being a Richard Dean Anderson fan really. Macgyver was the only thing I really have seen him in. Barely watched Stargate.

It’s being overall skeptical of tie in books to movies and tv shows. Often there connection to the source is loose at best.

There were a lot of episodes which had no "tie in" to other episodes or the series. They were just MacGyver out doing stuff or helping a friend - no Pete or Phoenix involved at all, so stand alone adventures are in themselves a tie in to the series.

For me the biggest thing is to get the character's "voice" right. They way he speaks, they way he acts. That's what will make or break the written connection to the show.
