Very good episode. Many MacGyverisms. I even think this is the only episode with the most isms over the entire series. What can I say? Typical 80's style episode. And one of the best endings too. Action till the last second. Driving a car out of plane at 20.000 feet!!!

The best part about this episode was Mac in a tuxedo. tongue.gif

I loved the part were he was standing in front of the mirror imagining himself as James Bond. And then struggling to keep his hair in place. Soooo cute. smile.gif

I was surprised to see him drink wine…very unMaclike (oh no...there’s that word again Hahaha)

I thought he could have poured it into the sink or something like that. But I guess in the interest of time, he drank it. ohmy.gif

One little nic pick about this episode occurs when Mac is shooting craps. Players never stand on that side of the table. Only the box person and croupier stand there.

Don’t ask how I know this. Hahaha laugh.gif

QUOTE (MacGyverGod Sep 20 2004 @ 06:04 AM )
That's not unMac like, this time it was for an ism. A very important ism.

Hmm, MacGyver as James Bond!

Awesome episode! wink.gif

Yes, there was a ton of MacGyverisms in this episode and it was very action packed. I loved the ending where he drove the car out of the plane!

I thought he would have tipped it into one of the other glasses as he was on the last tone.

He did seem a little stressed out though, so maybe it was to calm his nerves.

I like the way he screwed dup his face after drinking it though. I can totally agree with him on that. Red wine is horrible.

Geez Rocky I was going to say that! Yes I agree that he should have put the wine in the glass that he was done with. I saw this episode the other day. I have it on tape.. This is a great episode! Did you notice when the lady ran to the car they had a commerical and then they showed her running to the car again? What the heck did they do redo it and then overlap? The show does this again in other episodes. I like the part where he says he is bond james bond rofl.

Oh and the part where he sees the lady holding up a sign that says MacGyver and he says oh is your name MacGyver too? ROFL. The end where the car flies out and has a parachutte awesome! Then that lady kisses him on the lips ARGH! These sluts really annoy me ROFL.. That one macgyverism that Mac did was put something on this lady's dress and it fell down ROFL ROFL. the look on Mac's face hahahhaa..

QUOTE (Rockatteer Sep 20 2004 @ 10:07 AM )
There’s one thing about that car floating down scene that bothers me.
When they first drive out of the plane, the car does a complete roll before the parachutes open.

Neither of them where wearing seatbelts, so why didn't they fall out?

QUOTE (Sonyab Sep 20 2004 @ 11:38 AM )
Good question!!! I don't know. they were hanging on for dear life? MacGyver is SUPERMAN.. smile.gif da da da da da da da da da da <--- superman music rofl

One of my fav episodes. Very light harted, poking fun at the whole superspy ( ie. as in 007) scenario. ....and Mac was in a tux. What else do you need?

QUOTE (MacGirl Dec 5 2005 @ 02:45 PM )
I can't believe I missed commenting on this one! A great early ep. Definitely a sendup of 007!

Got a kick out of him using the wine glasses to open the safe, and using the bird for a distraction. And of course, the parachute and the car was great.

Loved him in a tux wub.gif and his Bond impersonation cracked me up! He really does that one well.

QUOTE (Lothil Dec 10 2005 @ 07:12 AM )
I loved this episode! Lawless and good hearted-- that's how I love my Mac! The tux and the wild hair, the 'Bond. James Bond' crack, a mynah bird for an accomplice, and, of course, the wild escape with the cargo parachute! A classic 'Oh, Please!' moment which I adore!

My favourite moment: Tossing the applecore into the trash can *victory pull!*

My favourite lines:

Chris Rhodes: "How can you sleep?"
Sleepy Mac: "Usually it's no problem!"

I've just got Season 1 on DVD so I'm going through it any chance I get. biggrin.gif
And I loved this episode!!!
Mac in the tuxedo wub.gif
It's just a really great episode.
I love the 'Bond. James Bond.' moment.
The scene when he's at the mirror & his hair is sticking up!
When he first meets her at the airport & she's holding the sign,
and he says 'Is your name MacGyver too?'
There are so many great scenes!
There's so much going on in this episode.
How he gets the diamonds out, and all the stuff going on in the casino.
I was thinking it would've made a great Season opening show,
they could've made it 2hrs!
I just loved it.

Excellent! I loved the adventurous feel to the whole thing, tho I did think the driving the car out of the plane was...probably unrealistic. The "Bond" moment was great because MacGyver definitely lacks that 007 sophistication! laugh.gif

I watched this episode again today..

I love the "morning after" scene. roller.gif and the "how can you sleep?" line is a classic.

Didn't they use the "Usually it's not a problem" line in another later episode?

Anyway, in spite of a few nitpicks this episode gets 5 out of 5. Everything you'd expect from a MacGyver episode.

"Your name MacGyver? That's amazing, so's mine."

Posted by: victorinox 5 April 2007 - 05:34 AM
in my opinion, this episode is the best of the first season, if not the entire series. a truly great episode; and so many macgyverisms!

Posted by: Old Fan 5 April 2007 - 08:55 AM
I also love the James Bond moment (damn he looks good in a tux!)... and Mac's hair, which simply will not cooperate (it sticks straight up) - something we can look forward to in many future episodes. I like his natural dark auburn hair color before it got fooled around with, but maybe with the wisps of grey starting to show on the sides, they thought it might make him look too old(?) - so the blond frosting began not too many episodes later... The paperclip in the zipper of the lady's dress made for a really good diversion.

Really agree with this! biggrin.gif The out-of-control frosting of later shows is something I've just never been able to reconcile with the whole MacGyver mythology.

I just can't see the character of MacGyver sitting still in a salon chair with foil and chemicals all over his head. I keep trying to tell myself it's natural, and from the sun, but I just can't live in denial...they're obvious hardcore frost n' tip highlights.

If they would have been a more subtle "gently sun-kissed" type of highlight I could handle it. For anyone who may insist they're from the sun (in real life or the show), I'm not saying it's not possible, it's just not probable. laugh.gif

Is this the only episode the "How can you sleep?" line was ever used?

I'm having vague memory flashbacks of hearing it in another episode?

Of course it could just be a sugar rush.

This episode significantly betters "The Gauntlet" in many ways: the script is excellent, the tension is high, the MacGyverisms are more interesting and entertaining (with one exception), and the pace is quicker despite having the potential to be slower. (Car chase versus roulette table. What's gonna win?)

The performances are about on par with the earlier episode, especially Vernon Wells as Catlin. He's nicely evil, with an aura of sophistication that makes him fun to watch. Doran Clark isn't always quite as good as Chris Rhodes, but she's enjoyable and good nonetheless. I quite enjoyed seeing Mac sneak around the upper halls and into Catlin's private suite. The script is decent, with solid writing and good character development. (Those of us who've had poor dealings with them before will be glad to see the accountant killed off early on.)

Sadly, there is one MacGyverism that nearly ruins the entire show, and is perhaps the least believable of the entire series (there's one about equal in "The Coltons"). I'm no physicist, but it seems to me that regardless of a parachute, a car driven out the back end of an airplane that's in the air at the time will say "Screw this air!" and hit the ground at the fastest rate of speed possible. I could be wrong here, but it seems unbelievable and strange (and I could have done without the obligatory kiss between Rhodes and Mac). Solid episode overall.

My rating: 7.5/10

Well then I screwed up very much bad. Of course, I think the army probably carefully controls and orchestrates their drops, wherease Mac just drove the car out with about half a minute to think it up and actually do it.

This is entertainment... not reality TV.

If the parachute is large enough, it will slow the descent of large objects, however, attaching the parachute only to the back end of the car will result in the thing landing on its nose, thereby likely injuring the occupants.

This whole scene reminded me some of the scene from "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" when Indy uses an inflatable raft as a makeshift parachute and to safely land him, Short Round and Willie Scott on the ground. That probably wasn't terribly believeable either- but come on! Who cares? It's great entertainment and that's why they do it. The point of it is not really if this would work in real life- but if anyone could do it- it would be Indiana Jones! Or, in our case, MacGyver! smile.gif word1.png

Hi All!
Been awhile since I've posted anything here. Just thought I would pop in and ad my 50 cents to this episode. LOL I voted Good! I really thought this was a good episode. I agree about them going out the back of that airplane in the car with the parachute. Even though it may be unrealistic, it was still a Great stunt! Can you imagine how thrilling that would be parachuting out of an airplane in a car?? AWESOME! That rates better than any roller coster ride! LOL As for his other MacGyverisms in this episode those were cool too. Especially where he opened the doors to that vault with those wine glasses filled with wine. That was pretty creative! And I had no problem with him drinking that wine to change the pitch of the sound. It wasn't like he was going to get drunk on just one sip of wine! I probably would have done the same thing. Plus, he had all the other glasses set with the right pitch, and he didn't want to mess them up, so that's why he took a drink of that glass. That's just my thoughts on that. I thought that was pretty funny when he unzipped that woman's dress with that paper clip and string as a distraction. LOL laugh.gif That cracked me up! I have to say, she probably deserved it. She was pretty mean to that waitress, so Mac picked her for the distraction. ;-)
And I too thought that was really cute when he was standing in front of the mirror trying to flatten his cowlick. That was funny too! And him saying "Bond, James Bond!" Cute! Even though Mac lacked the suave sophistication of the real James Bond, I thought he played the part really well! And I agree, he did look really Great in a tuxedo. He wore another tuxedo in that episode, "The Enemy Within" where this man's wife had brainwashed him into killing that Russian woman. He had to wear a tuxedo when he attended this symposium and the Russian woman was the guest of honor. He looked great in that too even though he didn't want to wear it. LOL Of course I'm a sucker for guys in tuxedos or uniforms for that matter! LOL

All in all I really liked this episode too. I agree, there were a lot of "MacGyverisms" in this episode. Him "fixing" those dice with that powder and shoe shiner, using those tubes to bypass that light beam to get into Caitlin's room, etc. They really outdid themselves in this episode! COOL!

Anyway, just thought I would pop in and post some comments on this episode. Thanks Rocky for keeping us posted on these episode discussions. These are great!

Take Care,
Nancy

This was one of my favorite episodes of the first season! I really like the actor who plays the main villian. The MacGyerisms were pretty good here and the whole James Bond thing was really funny. I also thought the part where Mac is looking in the mirror and trys to flatten his hair was great! Overall this episode was great with the execpion of a really cheesy ending! LOL clapping.gif

This episode was awesome! I really liked the villian, his accent makes him sound cool. The Part where Mac Has the mirrior reflectinog the camera back to itself was awesome. It kept me on the edge of my seat when the guard came down to check it out and Mac got inside JUST in time! Great episode!

Yea ive always liked Macs hairstyle. Season 7's is my favorite! And a sculpture would be really cool! That'd be funny if they made a Chia pet of MacGyver!

Well everyone seems to love this episode (including me I might add).

Which leads me to the question: Why is the direction credited to "Alan Smithee"? Alan Smithee is a made-up name that is used in place of the real director's name when they don't want to be credited with the direction.

I wonder what happened here.

And that ''Your name MacGyver? So is mine!'' is just hilarious. roller.gif

Posted by: NightTinkerer 30 July 2012 - 05:04 PM
Most of the things I noticed/liked/disliked about this episode have already been discussed here, so I don't have too much to say, really.

I think it was a very humorous "homage" to James Bond--and I, too, love the part where Mac's trying to flatten his hair. It would have been even funnier if he'd already had the mullet... wonder what he'd do with that one? laugh.gif

Lots of funny lines in this one too. The "Usually, it's not a problem" and "Your name is MacGyver too?" are two of my absolute favorites.

"Chris" was a pretty independent girl, but I think her acting was a little bit over the top at times. Not a female character I would remember for long. The last scene was more than a little cheesy--but then again, what would a James Bond inspired episode be without a little kissing? tongue.gif

A "Good" rating from me.

I liked this episode, but my favorite part was when MacGyver met Chris at the airport. Loved that line!! I am actually a bit jealous of you all. The TV versions that I am watching cut the part with MacGyver trying to get his hair to cooperate. It went straight to him in the Tux in the casino. I am so going to have to get my own DVD set!!!! I liked the "Bond, James Bond" line too.

There are 2 episodes that I absolutely love from first season, Nightmares and The Heist. This episode is full of funny stuff and lots of MacGyverism. It cracks me up every time to hear Mac say the James Bond line or things like, Chris: How can you sleep? MacGyver: Usually, it's no problem or the Sign lady. It's just hilarious. To me this episode has pretty much everything you could hope for. While RDA being great, Australian Vernon Wells is also great add to the cast. I remember him from Mad Max 2, Innerspace, Commando no name a few.

A small moment I liked in this episode: the scene at the beginning where Catlin wipes the floor with two sparring buddies in quarterstaff combat while Mac casually watches from the audience. In a Bond movie, it’s the sort of scene that screams Bond will have to fight him with that same weapon later in the movie. Here, it’s a red herring – the staffs never reappear.

It means MacGyver lives in the same world as James Bond, but he doesn’t play by its rules – his skillset is completely different, therefore his approach to the villains is too, and that’s why so many of them end up blindsided. Catlin is a guy who expects to have to face the James Bonds and Rambos and John Matrixes of the world and keeps himself trained accordingly, but ultimately they’re not what he should be worried about.

yeah it looked like the car Mac was in nearly tipped upside down.

I never understood why he told the women to get down on the floor. sitting on the seat with a seatbelt on seems far more practical to me.

I really like this episode but that ending drives me nuts - of course he would normally have told her to strap in and not take the helmet for himself - but I have a feeling the stock footage they used of the car parachute had one person in the car wearing a helmet, so that's why he tells her to hide and puts the helmet on himself... hmm.bmp Also they go from the tropics to parachuting over the desert lol. Definitely felt not quite resolved at the end. Also during the riot what made the bad guy all of a sudden suspect her enough to run out after the brunette?

I love the exchange when she wakes him up - adrenaline and attraction makes sense, lol - she puts her hand on his, gets embarrassed and then takes his coffee to get him more when he hasn't even sipped it yet laugh.gif

Some interesting trivia for this episode....

Doren Clark (Chris Rhodes in this episode) was also a co-star of the Emerald Point N.A.S. with RDA... along with Sala Ward whom RDA was dating when MacGyver started.
