Star Wars: Episode IX," the sequel to the upcoming "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" and ninth installment of the space franchise, has been set for a Memorial Day 2019 release, Disney announced on Tuesday.
The film, which continues the saga started by 1977's "Star Wars," will open on May 24, 2019.
This will be a bit of a change for the brand, which has had "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," the spinoff "Rogue One," and the upcoming "Last Jedi" all open around the Christmas holiday.
But "Star Wars" fans will now only have to wait a year between Disney's Han Solo origin film, set for a May 25, 2018 release, and "Episode IX.

J.J. Abrams is officially returning to Star Wars for Episode IX
Abrams will write and direct the final movie in the trilogy he started.

A week after it was announced that director Colin Trevorrow was leaving Star Wars: Episode IX, Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that J.J. Abrams will replace Trevorrow to co-write and direct the last film in the sequel trilogy he kicked off with 2015’s Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

The announcement came via a statement posted on the official Star Wars site:

J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.
Star Wars producer Kathleen Kennedy added, “With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy.”

Abrams’s appointment feels like a move toward stability — Force Awakens was a critical hit and hauled in over $2 billion worldwide — after a period of behind-the-scenes turbulence for the most successful sci-fi franchise of all time: Trevorrow’s departure was the second high-profile Star Wars shakeup this summer, following the June replacement of Phil Lord and Chris Miller with Ron Howard on the Han Solo prequel late into that film’s production.

Star Wars: Episode IX is still in the development stage and has not yet begun production. The movie was originally scheduled to be released in May of 2019, but has been moved to December 20, 2019.

Star Wars 9: Lando actor Billy Dee Williams returning to franchise

Star Wars 9 fever is officially underway with the circulation of several casting rumours intensifying in recent weeks.

Following on from the news that The Americans star Keri Russell will be joining the fold, it's now been confirmed that Billy Dee Williams - the original actor behind Han Solo's compadre Lando Calrissian - will be rejoining the franchise.

Sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Episode IX will mark Williams' first appearance in the film series as the character since Return of the Jedi in 1983. He made his debut in 1980 sequel The Empire Strikes Back with Donald Glover playing a younger incarnation of the gambler in spin-off prequel Solo which was released earlier this summer.

Matt Smith 'lands key role' in Star Wars: Episode IX

The Crown actor will feature in latest instalment of sci-fi franchise, according to reports.

Matt Smith has been cast in a key role in the next Star Wars film, according to reports.

The former Doctor Who actor has been linked to Star Wars: Episode IX, the US entertainment magazine Variety has reported. Details of his role are not yet known.

Directed by JJ Abrams, the film will complete the sequel trilogy, after The Force Awakens in 2015 and The Last Jedi in 2017. Returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Lupita Nyong’o and Mark Hamill. Billy Dee Williams will reprise the role of Lando Calrissian, while footage of the late Carrie Fisher, unused in The Force Awakens, will be repurposed to revive Princess Leia.

Smith’s big-screen career has been less successful than his TV work, for which he was nominated for an Emmy award for his role as the Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix series The Crown. He made his debut in 2008’s In Bruges, but his scene was deleted. A role in 2015’s Terminator Genisys was expected to have been followed by appearances in two sequels, but they were cancelled. Smith’s forthcoming film, Charlie Says, in which he plays the American cult leader Charles Manson, will premiere at the Venice film festival on Sunday.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on 20 December 2019.
