There's plenty of interest in MacGyver's wardrobe, but who has or has had The Haircut...?

I've only had short hair once in my life, for about a year. It was 1988 and I did indeed have the shaggy MacGyver haircut, circa Season 3/4. Without the blond streaks though, just my own gingery-brown. biggrin.gif

Anyone else?

I took two small haircuts this year but before that I didn't took one in over a year. My hair was really long going fifth season style. If I wanted I could make a ponytail. I like it that my hair can move around. My friends don't like it like that and threatened they cut it off. I really took that personally. Anyway, I really like the seventh season style. Good Knight MacGyver or The Stringer. And I like to keep that style. Personally I don't mind it falls over my eyes. And I really got compliments when it was long from colleagues. So, yeah, I like that MacGyver haircut and I like to have it myself.

I liked it on me back then, it was just very weird not to have long hair and so I grew it back.

I never remember it being called a Mullet haircut in the '80s though - that seems to be a term that crept in after it stopped being a fashionable haircut later on...

I grew my hair long because of MacGyver. I have naturally wavy hair and several times women would come up to me and either ask how I got my hair to "do that" or they told me they were jealous they had to work to get their hair to do what mine does naturally.

Do any of us who sported MacG.gif's long hair, have pictures to share? I'll post one of me once I dig through a box of photos I have.

Possibly! Might mean trawling through my Mum's photo album, but I'll see what I've got here...

Why is it called a mullet anyway? I never have known...

A Google search reveals that there are 3 trains of thought on the origin.

1. It comes from the word "mullethead." meaning dim-witted, which originated in the late 19th century.

2. The Beastie Boys song Mullet head in 1994.

3. The hairstyle was first worn by French fashion guru Henri Mollet in the early seventies. The "Mollet" did not see much light apart from in the french underground dance scene, until it was ressurected by popular television

Dim-Witted and MacGyver.... hmm.bmp

Since I'm Greek i i'll go with this:
In the second book of The Iliad, the 8th-Century B.C. poet Homer lists the various Greeks who shipped out to fight the Trojans, including the mullet-wearing Abantes of the island of Euboea:

The sprinting Abantes followed hard at [Elephenor's] heels, their forelocks cropped, hair grown long at the back, troops nerved to lunge with their tough ashen spears and slash the enemies' breastplates round their chests. In Elephenor's command sailed forty long black ships.[2]

Here's an article on 'Hockey Hair' which peaked at or around the time MacGyver aired. The sport's fad most likely influenced RDA's hairstyle op .... and not to mention that this style of mop was a real lady magnet. Notice Gretzky on this list, who was mentioned in passing on more than one occasion within the series and possibly a part/component of the Mac model makeup .......

QUOTE
All business up front, party in the back. Perhaps no hairstyle in history has been as celebrated and as mocked as the humble mullet. Musicians like Billy Ray Cyrus and actors like David Faustino (Bud Bundy) have certainly done their part in raising mullet awareness. However, in no other facet of life is the mullet more prevalent than in the world of athletics. Legends like relief pitcher Dennis Eckersley, tennis ace Andre Agassi, and NFL linebacker Brian Bosworth (okay, maybe not so legendary) have all rocked the hairstyle in their time. However, if one sport can truly claim ownership of the mullet, it has to be hockey. In the 80s, short hair was the exception, not the rule, and most players had a magnificent mane flowing out from under the back of their helmets. The style became so popular the term “Hockey Hair” (pretty much interchangeable with “mullet”) was coined.

With so many players in the 80s and early 90s sporting this legendary hairdo, ........

After reading that article I do have to say there were also God-ugly mullets. There really is variation but not one of them comes close to Mac's level of mullet. Personally I'd try to keep season 7 style.

But there are plenty of famous mullets. Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon for one, Mario Lopez in Saved By The Bell (remember A.C. Slater?), also Tommy Morrison in Rocky V AKA Tommy 'The Machine' Gunn and Denis Leary also had a mullet in Rescue Me. Or who can forget about John Stamos in Full House?

That articles a load of rubbish. Everyone had mullets back in the 80's. It was a world wide fashion.

I live in New Zealand where the only 2 sports followed in that time period were Rugby and Cricket and the mullet was as popular here as anywhere else. I would say the main cause of the world wide spread was music video and TV shows - 2 of the strongest influences in our modern society.

Well it's hardly a load of 'rubbish' - an odd word choice at best.

Undeniably, there's a strong connection between Mac, the Mullet and the hockey thing. The fact that it is/was known as a 'hockey haircut' has been well documented and more players choosing this style per capita than any other sport ..... but of course that's not to say that particular sport was the 'only' recreation where it was seen. As a comparison, can you post a top 10 cricket/rugby mullet images/links from that era? I could easily link a 100+ hockey players with mullets via google images/youtube.

Furthermore, the hockey tradition continues as little as three years ago and with the Patrick Kane(the Mane Man and coined 'MacGyver on Ice' by the Chicago Tribune) and the Chicago Black Hawks run to their Stanley Cup victory. PS: look for Kane to sport it again this coming season and for the Hawks playoff run.

QUOTE
Campbell, a top defenseman in the league the last eight seasons, marvels at the unorthodox methods the 5-foot-10, 178-pound Kane uses to get around bigger, stronger players with the puck to create open lanes for shots or passes. Like MacGyver on skates, complete with the mullet, somehow Kane finds a way to escape impossible spots.

I misspoke. I was actually talking about the implication that the mullet was popular because of the particular sports people mentioned. As I mentioned it was just as popular in countries who mostly didn't even know what some of those sports (such as Ice Hockey) were.

The common denominator through all those countries would have to be pop stars and TV shows. You would be hard pressed to find an 80's band or singer without a mullet I think, likewise with many actors of the time.

Music videos and TV shows seem to be how most fashions spread even today. Just look at how fast and far that ridiculously stupid fashion of wearing your jeans half way down your butt spread thanks to rap videos. headbutt.gif

Well, the mullet circa 1985 version in North America was influenced(not entirely) by sports figures - particularly hockey players and their shear numbers. The hockey mullet was more practical than fashionable though - short in front so that you could see skating a 100 miles an hour down the ice and long in back for some 'mane' protection from hacks, whacks, slashes and punches to the back of the neck. Nothing too poofy or permed ala the musicians and other celebrities' style. I don't think anybody is disputing the hairstyle's origins and evolution from shags to British rock to the redneck culture to 80s pop rock etc.

Also, don't forget Mac actually pretends that he is Wayne Gretzky(he of a top 10 hockey hairdo) in an early episode of the show. So, imo, it's pretty clear as to where MacGyver's mop was drawn up from.
