Does anyone else have extra-special memories related to time spent watching
MacGyver? I certainly do. I thought we could share our stories.
Here's one of mine:
Like many of us, I actually have a lot of favorite episodes of
MacGyver.
LTOA is my sentimental favorite, for a number of reasons. One of the big reasons is because it aired in conjunction with something in my young life that it made it seem extra special.
In one of my 4th grade classes, I got an assignment to do an in-depth report on a topic of my choosing. At the time, I was sort of obsessed with a fabled lost city....in Oman, called Ubar. (I became interested in the topic after reading an article about Nicholas Clapp's excavation of a possible site for the city in a children's magazine.)
However, this was the bad ol' days before the internet really took off, and after exhaustive searches in
both my school and city libraries, I couldn't find any additional sources. My teacher told me that I had to broaden my topic, so I picked archaeology and did my report on several famous archaeological excavations; Atlantis was among them. I first heard the story of Atlantis when I was very young while watching the 1959 version of
Journey to the Center of the Earth (one of my dad's favorites).
In the months that followed, I spent a lot of time reading for and writing my report. I made a big poster and some models and got my presentation ready. About a week and a half before my report was due, we got a
TV Guide showing that ABC was airing
MacGyver: Lost Treasure of Atlantis. We always liked the series and the timing was so funny awesome that we watched (and recorded) the movie.
Since I just spent a couple of months reading about Atlantis, I knew while I was watching the show that
some parts of the historical narrative were actually true.
I gave my speech to the class the following week. Before I started, I asked if anyone else watched the recent
MacGyver TV movie. No one else in the class did.
But, seeing
LTOA while finishing my report still is one of my
favorite memories of my elementary school years.
