Penny Parker

MacGyver's scatterbrained friend. An aspiring singer and actress, Penny is one of those people, according to MacGyver, who needs "looking after."

She met MacGyver at a Bulgarian airport, but not under the best of circumstances; both were detained after police found Penny's jewels (which were later revealed to be the stolen crown jewels) in MacGyver's pocket.

After a happy ending, Penny appeared again in Los Angeles, having "borrowed" Mac's apartment while she earned a living as a singing telegram. She enlisted MacGyver's help in solving the mystery of her aunt Betty's house and, presumably, is still trying to make it as an actress.

This character annoyed me to no end. I believe Teri Hatcher once said she really regretted taking this part. I think her character is basically an insult to all females. The worst character in the series in my opinion.

Ohh terri hatcher I can't stand the way she acts in some of the ep's but that totally goes out the window because she is terri hatcher and very hot MacG.gif

She makes me laugh so she gets a good vote from me. Yes, she can be annoying but she entertains me. I find her harmless fun and I love some of the lines she comes out with. laugh.gif

I liked her and thought she added something to the show. She remineded me of a freind of mine too. whistle.gif Ditzy? Sure, but I don't think she was representative of all the women on the show. In fact I think she was the only one with that personality.

Didn't she also work at the Phoenix Foundation? I thought I rememeber that in some flashback episode. hmm.bmp

No she never did officially work at the foundation.

Penny Parker... love her, hate her?

When I first saw MacGyver, I really didn't think anything about her.

She was:
Pretty, check.
Talented, yeah... kinda. So, check.
Ditsy, check.
Annoying, check. (the voice especially)
Whiny, checkcheck...

...and all the guys liked her, so basically her job had been done. Did I watch an episode just because she was on...? No, but I didn't turn the TV off either.

Take her or leave her... I think my real problem is not with Penny Parker, but with Teri Hatcher. Budding actress getting a plum role that launched her career. (Love Boat really didn't count...)

I watched her in Lois and Clark, but not in Desperate Housewives. *shrug*

I sort of liked her character because she was so charmingly dumb, but overall a nice person. The episodes with her in them were pretty good, I think. Thank God MacGyver never liked her romantically, though.
Hatcher can't complain, either, cus' it did launch her career. She was a nobody before MacGyver and it helped her get her role on Lois and Clark, not to mention make some cash.

I really enjoyed the episode Parker House. It was great of MacGyver to be a true friend of Penny. It is too bad there are not more individuals who can be such a true friend. Does anyone else feel this way? Janet Marie

Her naive outlook and demeanor seemed to be fake at first. But she developed into a person who is generally sees the good in people. She is a genuinely caring and positive person. This really made her a good partner for Mac who is constantly battling the bad in people.

Why Yall Dont like penny. I really like her character. She is clueless and that is what i find funy about her.

I like Penny, I just think she's soo bubbly, and she just talks a mile a minute. She's well intentioned, good hearted, pretty, but I agree that she's not for Mac is a romantic sense. I find it annoying when she kisses him.
Favorite Penny Parker scenes for each episode:
Every Time She Smiles: Her and Mac in the bathrobes - laugh.gif
Soft Touch: Penny and Yuri in the meat freezer and get rescued by Mac-great MacGyverism!
Friends: Penny meets Jack Dalton
Secret of the Parker House: The part where Pennty is so scared and nearly clobbers Mac with the iron rod, and he's holding Aunt Betty's skull: harhar.gif
Cleo Rocks: I hate the whole opening with her dancing, sorry fellas, but I like the stuff between her and Murdoc- and the best is when she kicks the gun from Murdoc's hand boxing.gif
Serenity: The look on Mac's face when Penny is on his answering machine singing Oh Susannah! ohmy.gif

Very pretty and ditzy. I enjoy watching her get Mac into crazy situations and testing his patience and attention span.

There are definately moments too when Penny stops being an airhead (even if it is for a short time) and speaks her mind. One of my favorite Penny scenes is in Cleo Rocks where she stands up for herself with Wintergreen the theater owner. And even with Mac, she lets him know that innocence and naivete don't equate with stupid.

In Cleo Rocks, Mac asks her "Are you sure you weren't just spooked by the lights going out?"
And Penny says, "MacGyver I know what I saw!" She refuses to be treated like a ditz.

I really disliked her, she was just stupid and qwerky and really clueless. I never got why a cool guy like Mac liked a ditzy girl like Penny. She just was to dumb to be with a smart guy like MacGyver. I voted poor.

Posted by: dinoman 23 March 2009 - 04:32 PM
Sometimes Penny could be annoying but this is not her only quality. She was attractive to many people in 'Every Time She Smiles': the KGB officer, the Greek officer, there were even men buying her drink when she was at the restaurant waiting for Mac to come back! Not to mention Murdoc, a cold-hearted killer, was also attracted by her beauty and her character. She could be a lovely lady if she can keep the pitch of her voice down a little bit.

I think it's called seeing good in everyone.

And thats what MacGyver did. He saw her as innocent and naive; A kind gentle person.

He seemed to have a big brother complex towards her. There was never anything else to their relationship.

Teri Hatcher started out on a soap opera called Captial back in the early to mid 80's. Then she showed up on MacGyver. I really liked her in Lois and Clark. I'm glad that Penny and Mac had a brother-sister realtionship. tongue.gif

I don't think there is much good in her. She is just extremely annoying and the only good thing she does in the show is provide a character to laugh at.

I'm not crazy about her now, but I'm an adult now. As a kid, I used to really enjoy the episodes she was in, and I was sorry that she stopped appearing later in the series. Keeping in mind that MacGyver IS a kids' show, and she appealed to me as a kid, I guess she was a good character. Sometimes it's easy to make the mistake of judging these things as an adult, when adults weren't really the target the audience.

Posted by: SMeeceymouse 29 March 2009 - 06:31 PM
I don't see MacGyver as a "kids show". I watched it in my 20's and even to this day I'll watch a episode on the computer. I'm now in my 40's. I remember MacGyver taking on such issues as racism, the enviroment, gang wars, drug use, kids bullying, and gun issues.; and even how war veterens are treated. At the end of the Challengers Club episode it gave a number so that young people had a place to call. Yes it encouraged kids to get involved with science. But the issues that it brought attention to are as relevent today as they were back in the 80-90's. Too me we could use more MacGyver like series. sak.gif

Posted by: aatgmac 1 April 2009 - 06:55 AM
We really could. Probably do the world of good, lots of issues solved with violence in shows today unfortunately.

Back to Penny, I think she was ok for an episode once in a while, giving Mac reasons to pull stressed faces which I love happy.gif

Too much however got kind of annoying. Way too happy. How is that possible?

Posted by: Beachbead 1 April 2009 - 07:00 AM
As MacGyver had said: "shes the type of girl that needs to be looking after alot."
and his words was right, she did have a kind side to her but over all she is a scatter brain.

Posted by: SMeeceymouse 1 April 2009 - 08:02 AM
I agree too much Penny is too much. I think she was a character that Mac could play big brother too. Frankly she plucked his nerves, and mine. Teri Hatcher could have made her a stronger character in the writers had let her, or written the character. It seems a waste of talent. Even on Desperate Housewives she is Penny Parker kind of scatter brained. smile.gif

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 1 April 2009 - 12:29 PM
I think she's kinda like that in real life. She's very....um... loose. laugh.gif

Although she does have her moments.

She turned out to be a Swan very pretty.

Posted by: HERBALTLADY 16 June 2009 - 05:49 PM
She's not that bad of an actress on MacGyver. But I don't watch Desperate Housewives and I didn't even know she was on that show, until today.

Posted by: Rinceoir 12 April 2010 - 07:22 PM
I was never fond of Penny. She can be sweet, but she brings way too much trouble into Mac's life and never seems to think before she acts. Even so, I might have liked her, but her voice just drives me nuts.

Posted by: Traveller 16 April 2010 - 02:20 AM
Penny has definitely grown on me. The first time I watched 'Everytime she smiles' I didn't like her at all. How she pulled Mac into trouble, her ongoing babbling, very annoying. Then, the more I saw of her (and that episode, and the other episodes) the more I liked her. I completely understand Mac's big brother feelings towards her.
And I admired Teri Hatcher's intelligence as an actress, the way she portrayed Penny.

Now yesterday I watched the clips Rock put in with Teri Hatcher on David Letterman, and what I saw was... Penny! Just as sweet and funny and babbly. I never knew Penny was so close to Teri Hatcher's own personality. I still think she's a wonderful actress, but the Penny part must have been pretty easy for her.

Posted by: MacGyverOnline 26 October 2010 - 12:28 AM
Penny's a Halloween baby! October 31st

Posted by: Beachbead 29 November 2010 - 02:09 PM
I think if Teri was to play Penny again there would be some changes like her voice and the way she acts, she would be more growin' up by now and maybe have a family.

Posted by: Makedde 5 March 2011 - 11:42 PM
Can't stand her! I voted poor. She annoys me no end, its just yak yak yak yak. She never shuts up. Whenever I watch her I want to reach through the TV and slap her.

She provides amusement because it is funny watching someone talk someone to death. But I think Mac find himself rescuing her too much, she comes across as very naive and stupid.

I think her character is bad, especially for women - it's like she's saying that all women are as dumb as she is, and that isn't the case.

Not the best character, in my book.

duct.gif Teri Hatcher's character was an airhead and I can't see what Qualities besides her looks that Mac found appealing.

it's like she's saying that all women are as dumb as she is, and that isn't the case.

How exactly does that work?

because working on that logic....

Nikki Carpenter is saying all women are strong and determined?

Murdoc is saying all men a psychotic killers?

Pete Thornton is saying all middle aged bosses are kind caring do anything for their employees?

Jack Dalton is saying all friends are a pain in the neck?

I've never understood the logic behind claiming one character on TV implies that all members of that sex are like that character. It seems to only ever be said about female roles too. Very odd.

I like Teri Hatcher. Always thought her as a likable actress.

True, Penny's character was a little on the annoying side but years after watching it has made me smile at her whenever she does something goofy.

If I think about it, her character in Desperate Housewives was almost the same.

She played a totally different part in Lois & Clark, being this absent minded yet determined individual who portrayed a slightly cold shoulder at times. With a heart of gold of course. But then again, that's Lois Lane for you. biggrin.gif

Posted by: KiwiTek 6 March 2014 - 11:42 PM
Lois Lane. The stupidest women in history - fooled by a pair of glasses. laugh.gif

Posted by: MacGyverGod 9 March 2014 - 01:59 AM
Penny turned from a girl who dared to give a little feedback into a typical damsel- in-distress. I think if Soft Touch was written by somebody else or appeared later in the show, they would've caught her. Instead she locked the bad guys and managed to get away with the jeep.

With exception of The Secret of Parker House and Cleo Rocks, I kinda liked her. But in season 4 her panicking is terrible. She screamed and called for Mac for the least thing that happened. She was uncomfortable with the things that happened in the Parker House with Mac around, but she didn't mind him going to town and staying behind in the house. It' doesn't always have to be night for bad thing to happen you know.

And in Cleo Rocks even after Murdoc revealed himself, she still believed there was a Jacques Le Rue. Because he "writes beautiful music and is charming and romantic." And Murdoc falls in love with her? headbutt.gif

In all I think Cleo Rocks is a nice episode but the acting is terrible especially from Teri Hatcher.

I did not like her at first, but I listened to what Mac says about her, and probably, my feelings to her followed Mac's. She is the little sister he has to take care for, she cares about other people and is very naive but she has a good heart and gives us the chance to see the big brother in Mac.

I do find Penny rather annoying. But most of the female characters on the programme were portrayed as intelligent and resourceful.

PPPPTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHH! didn't like her. MacGyver needed smart women, not ditzes.

I liked Penny. She was the typical "valley girl" from California in those days. They were all like that.

I generally don't judge people based on intellectual level, but mostly on how good of a person they are. In Penny's case, she may not have been high up in the brains department, but at least she was good person... and MacGyver knew that.

Then again, I see a bit of myself in Penny too... as I'm a major talker, and can be known to be a bit annoying myself. =P

Thank goodness he's fictional and spared the prospect of meeting me.

Definitely, & Julie Brown was the poster girl for that schtick back in the day. For those not familiar with the 'Valley Girl' personality ... check out some of her work back then and compare/extrapolate with Penny:
