I really enjoyed this episode. It certainly drew inspiration from the original series episode, but I appreciated that the solution for the problem was an original idea. I think the series is definitely heading in the right direction. I found myself just enjoying this episode from start to finish. The MacGyverism's seemed easier to follow this episode, and I'm even liking Cage's character quite a bit. She reminds me a bit of Maria from the orignal series. I know a lot of people didn't care for her in the show, but I thought she was an interesting character and I would have liked to have seen more of her.

While many storylines for episodes in Season 2 remind me of Original Episodes, they end up completely different than I imagined when reading the press release.

That's good for me. If you didn't watch the show avidly, you probably don't even make the connection.

I liked this episode a lot. My biggest complaint is the constant background music which I found really distracting - which is sad because I found it great they added a bit of a different music while scenes in the Nigerian village.

I know I'm at a disadvantage anyway with English not being my native language - I have a hard time concentrating because not only is there constant music, but it's also too loud in my opinion and completely unnecessary, e.g. during an exposition scene in the War Room with so many actors involved.

The tension can be created by the actors and their reactions, there's just no need for building music when Matty is explaining the mission blink.gif

Interestingly, Episode 1x10 aired in Austrian TV today and I noticed again that while dubbing the episode, they turn the background music down a notch. I think it does wonders for the mood of the episode when it's underlining the story and not "drowning out" the emotions.

Preliminary ratings are interesting. The ratings went down a bit, but the episode had about 800'000 viewers more than last week: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/the-...-11-3-2017.html

Makes me wonder how many viewers they would have had last week without the World Series Game. It also looks like while some viewers might watch "Blindspot" instead, it's not such a big competition as I thought. It already lost 600'000 viewers since last week and the other show keep dropping audience numbers as well.

To me, this was the most MacGyver-like episode we've seen in this reboot.
It obviously took inspiration from the Hellfire episode (and they even mentioned the John Wayne movie "Hellfire"), but I think this was actually better than the original Hellfire episode. Lots of fun action scenes in this one, but also plenty of heart, which is exactly how a MacGyver episode should be. I even thought the team aspect of the show worked pretty well in this one.

I do agree with Dashboard about the music being overly prevalent in this show, particularly during exposition scenes. I've voiced that complaint many times already, so I guess I'm at a point where I figure I just need to accept it, since it's clear the show doesn't intend to change, unfortunately.

My other complain about this episode is Mattie. When she first joined the show, I found her annoying, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and assumed she'd change into someone more likable as she learned to trust and respect the team. But she's still just as abrasive now as she was then, and it's really hard to like her. Fortunately, her role in this episode was minimal.

So, yeah, overall, I'm enjoying season 2 quite a bit more than season 1.

That's what I thought, as well.

And the team angle really worked for me, too.

I think Meredith is a sweetheart and I know many like Mattie, but I'm not very fond of her character. To me, she still comes across as a bully and the scene of her ass-slapping Jack in Episode 2x03 just doesn't work for me. It's not fun, it's just plain sexual harrassment and an abuse of her position.

I feel they want to give her funnier lines every episode, but to me, she just comes meaner and more abrasive every time. Also, it looks like they dumped her habit of doubting Mac onto Cage. Now she's the one nagging and doubting him all the time.

Final Ratings are in: http://www.showbuzzdaily.com/articles/show...-11-3-2017.html

They lost some viewers, but still stayed over 7 million live viewers. So this episode has the highest number of live viewers so far in Season 2.

Just saw the end of it,,,,, looked pretty good .... in an 'Our Gang' kind of way. One niggle, when they 'jet' through the fire on the road and come to an abrupt stop and after going hell bent for leather ..... there doesn't appear to be skid marks commensurate with the rate of speed they were going. unsure.gif In comparison, I was on a dirt road last month and had to lock up the brakes when a moose jumped out .... and did leave some noticeable and swervish tracks.

Now THIS felt like a MacGyver episode. It was nice to see the team do something good for a change, not to mention going against Matty's orders for the sake of doing what was right. MacGyver would do so without batting an eyelash, damn the employment repercussions.

Original MacGyver often respectfully questioned authority when he thought they were wrong, and he also didn't have a problem walking out (Fraternity of Thieves) when he felt his morals were being compromised by shady conduct. Though, he often got away with it because he had a good relationship with Pete, and his skills made him irreplaceable.

Though I hope the punishment for Riley and Bozer weren't too severe. I felt they did the right thing, and acted the way most people would have in their shoes. I mean... who wouldn't?

I don't have many thoughts on this episode, but I did enjoy it and thought it was great! Nice work by the team!

I don't have many thoughts on this episode, but I did enjoy it and thought it was great! Nice work by the team!

I think like the cast and the crew have finally found their rhythm and it shows.

Both Lucas Till and George Eads have commented about how difficult Season 1 was. I guess it's not easy doing a Reboot, meeting all expectations while targeting a modern audience and still honoring the original.

I feel like although the show has deviated a bit more from the Original characterwise, the episodes work so much better now - not just because the writing is better, but also because the actors feel more comfortable in their roles now.

I think it might be even better if they didn't keep the same structure of the episodes. I mean, I really like the Opening Gambits, but they've become so short so they have enough time for all the "relationship-stuff" and the mission(s) before the team-bonding-end-scene, they could probably start ditching it. I guess if the show gets another season, they actually might have to - with all the new characters and parallel storylines running. (Because Lenkov made it clear it's all about the relationships, so they would probably rather ditch the Opening Gambits instead of the bromance and family stuff.)

I have wondered a bit about the punishment for Bozer and Riley because in Season 1, they have disobeyed orders before (e.g. in Episode 1x02 with Amy Acker), but no one ever had any real repercussions to fear. Even Acker's character Sarah (who was CIA) didn't, while Cage (still being CIA in 2x01) did.

I know this is a bit off topic, but I had to laugh because in the Supernatural fandom, Sam Winchester is called Moose. There are a ton of memes about it. My personal favorite is every time someone mentions a moose sighting, someone posts a picture of Jared Padalecki. XD

Sorry... couldn't resist... blame my sister.

I have to agree there. I know it's hard to get a successful reboot. I mean, I remember the Knight Rider reboot... it was SO BORING, and I tuned out after watching half the pilot... and the show failed miserably too.

Reboots can be hit and miss. MacGyver being so beloved, it was going to be hard to get the right feel for it. Some times it feels like they're taking notes from the actual original seasons. Like their Season 1 was more like the original Season 1, and this Season 2 is more like the original Season 2.

I mean, the original Season 2 had a far more different feel to it. But that may just be me picking up on little things. lol

But part of the reason I've continued to watch is because I know it's difficult and it deserved a fair shot.

I don't mind character deviation, though I wouldn't mind seeing some similarities every now and again... just for nostalgia sake. But I can live without because I understand that it may not fit. So... like with anything else in life, just take it stride and look at the positive.

I always have to remind myself the original wasn't perfect either.

On a side note, I found out yesterday that my landlady is a MacGyver fan too. She saw my MacGyver display and said... you're a MacGyver fan too!? Then we gushed about our crush on Richard Dean Anderson, and her reply was... who didn't have a crush on RDA? XD

Okay, I'm done. lol I'm shutting up now...

I'd still love to see more non-mission-episodes or missions that aren't so much politics-related. I felt the Original Phoenix Foundation was a bit more "free-spirited" when it came to missions (or RDAs MacGyver just took some liberties with that).

The fact that it's just another government organization is something we see in dozens of other shows already. Also things like the higher-ups being involved, following the chain of commands, the constant CIA-involvement (Sarah was CIA, Cage was CIA, Nikki was recruited for CIA, Ashley Tisdale will play a CIA-Agent) and reprimands or "punishment" if you don't follow the rules doesn't feel like MacGyver to me.

Sure, Original MacGyver wasn't very realistic in this regard (e.g. that Pete managed let MacGyver stay at Phoenix despite him constantly being out of line and not following the rules), but I wouldn't mind if the Reboot did it a bit more like that.

On another note: I think it's possible they cut Isabel Lucas out of the Opening Gambit.

Back in October, Isabel had posted a picture on Instagram of her wearing that Sami-Folklore-Attire.

I wonder if they listened to people complaining about not enough Mac-and-Jack-alone scenes with bromance and cut her screentime down or if it was just a time-issue.

It's a bit ironic, considering they also cut female actors from the Original show (although the reason for the complaints were different). I also wonder if that's the reason I haven't seen Isabel Lucas in any set pictures for the last few weeks.

Thank you! Yes, they're all along the wooded highways and especially deeper in the woods, on the old logging roads, where I was ..... so I wasn't going that fast, but fast enough to kick up some dust and dirt. I survived. But people die all the time here in moose/car collisions .... despite the more contemporary/ongoing construction of 'moose fence' along the major roadways. So .... back on topic, really thought 'the boys' would have kicked up a bit more dirt in that particular macgyverism and given their jet-propelled motion.

Guess we'll have to wait and see. I feel kinda bad for Isabel though. It's like the other actresses cut from the original... very selfish reasons, actually. But still, there's too much going on for more main characters. Side character maybe... like Jill, though I hope they'll be careful with how often they use her.

Other than a love interest, I still fail to see what Cage's purpose is IN the show.

If they're not careful, they're gonna end up with too many main characters

Can I be a main character? XD I make a hella good cup of coffee. biggrin.gif

I'm sure they're paying attention... seems like they've made changes based off what people have been hollering about.

Yeah, I agree. And it's funny, because I distinctly remember when the original show was still airing, I used to complain that it felt as if the writers forgot the Phoenix Foundation existed. By the later seasons, I started to wonder if Mac even still had a job there! But in this show, the foundation is a bit TOO prevalent, especially since all of Mac's friends work there.
It's all about finding the right balance, of course. Maybe every third or fourth episode could be just some random adventure Mac gets caught up in, rather than being an assignment. And, as you said, the missions he gets from Phoenix don't always need to be political. One of the cool things about the original Phoenix Foundation was how it got involved in all sorts of stuff-- political, humanitarian, environmental, etc. It really opened up the possibilities for the writers.

Overall, I feel the show has definitely gotten stronger in its second season, so now I'd like to see the writers take a few more risks and deviate from the formula a bit.

This episode was pretty clear where they got the inspiration from: Hellfire. Probably the most explosive episode in the original run and one of my favorites. But I do got to say the opening gambit was a bit misleading. There was no connection with the Penas or The Ghost whatsoever, only explosions, it didn't had anything to do with bombs. It was nice to see Mac is still visiting Annabella Pena but it just didn't make sense. I thought this episode was going to be about The Ghost again and they were going to track him down.

The episode itself was good only those two scenes with Annabella were actually pointless. Furthermore this was actually Blood Diamond meets Hellfire. The African music in this episode reminded me of James Newton Howard's score for Blood Diamond. The score never bothered me, I don't even hear the music when they're talking and I think that's the point. Why use it then, you say? It's just underscore. I would be so angry if the channels that airs the shows starts messing with it. I even saw on a German channel once they messed with the colors of Passages in the after-life scenes. There's nothing wrong with it, those scenes are supposed to have that white color because he's dead, you know.

What Matty is concerned this time... I was thinking: "woman, you're not there and you can't see anything, so it's not up to you to decide. Damn the consequences indeed." On the other hand she's just following orders but the whole punishment thing doesn't fit in the concept. It's like they don't appreciate the work the team deems necessary to complete a mission. How can they work if they have to do everything by the book? Again, this is where I miss the warmth, the friendship and the respect of Mac and Pete. As I said they always had each others back but besides that also the board seemed more than reasonable. I was just thinking of Ed Farell in Early Retirement and how he warned Pete that he should be taking it easy so he doesn't burn out, not to mention the understanding he showed after the accident. He suggested Pete to go on vacation instead of firing him. Even though it wasn't proven yet, he didn't had anything to do with it. But I'd sign up for a boss like that. Just look at our world today with all those burn-outs. Which boss would act like Farell? It's just always more and faster. I'm surprised Jill and Andie Lee haven't been crying at their desks yet. It shows that whoever Matty has to answer to, clearly don't know the team nor what they got even if it was them risking their lives for Phoenix during the attack in the season's finale. They should've gotten a medal for that.

Cage... well maybe she is asking questions because she's unfamiliar with Mac's working method. On the other hand Murdoc knows something we don't, so we know she most likely can't be trusted. I don't think she's a love interest but a mole. Another traitor if you will, but how, what and why? I don't think we need to know that so soon. I would just keep an eye out on her.

What I do wonder about: is it possible to extinguish fires with soundwaves? Of course it's fiction but it wouldn't be the first time isms actually works.

In all a good exciting episode. I just don't see the connection with the Penas.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.

It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

Yes, you can. There's several videos online. Here's one from 2015:

Here's one from 2017 that demonstrates how fire is affected by different sound frequencies at varying distances.
