A finally a two-parted episode. These are way to rare in the series. This is also the first episode (well duh) that ended ful of suspense. After 44 episodes finally an episode that made you hungry to the next episode. This was well written and more two parted episode should've been made like this. Pete was there, Jack Dalton who had to help Mac for once, instead of the other way around. Their chemistry in these two episodes were great. This also marks the return of a first season bad guy Major Kosoff and first season actor Anthony Delonghis and second season Chinese dude of which I forgot the name. A good way to start the third season with a bang. This is also the first episode since Flame's End to begin with an opening gambit except this opening gambit is a prologue of some sort and carries on after the MacGyver opening credits. I voted for excellent.

I love the scene where Mac tests the security system and uses the cleaning powder to see the laser.
Classic MacGyver.

I voted excellent. I can't pick a favorite, but this is one of the top best ten. IMHO
You got Jack. You can't go wrong with Jack. And you got MacGyver angsty. Stupid ex-girl friends.
My question is; what's up with all of these ex-girl friends? I mean seriously. How many did he think were dead throughout the series??
They probably just couldn't handle all that magnificent man. Looks and smarts? D'UH
oh.. and she looked better with long hair

I'd still swap spit with him. I'll buy some Sudafed the next morning on the way home.
But... my point was. They ditch him... then they all come back because they NEED him for something or another. They shoulda stuck with him. Then they wouldn't be in these fixes.

What's wrong with my avatar? First the one of Deathlock, then a black and white with Pete and Mac to remember Dana's passing away, then I tried several others but I wasn't allowed to use them and then I came up with this one.

Who Lisa? I mean Elyssa Davalos? What was up with that anyway? She changed her hairstyle with every different episode exception of course with Lost Love, Fire and Ice and GX-1. Four episodes and only two different hair styles.

"Lost Love" is the first of 3 great two-parters! This was an awesome episode with a great cliff-hanger, what with Lisa having an explosive necklace on and MacGyver having to break into his own security system and steal the Ming Dragon for the bad guys. And it was cool to see a sort of return of the "opening gambit", although in this case it was more of a prologue, as someone earlier noted. It definitely makes for a great start to the 3rd. season!
A side note- we also have a common thing in MacGyver on this episode. An actor or actress portrays a character in one episode and then portrays a completely different one later on. Like, in the "Pilot" episode, Dana Elcar portrayed "Andy Colson" and then went on to star as "Pete Thornton". In "Lost Love", Elyssa Davalos portrays "Lisa" and then goes on to star as "Nikki Carpenter". And she made a great addition to the cast.

You sure? I think she still had a few appearances in some other shows afterwards but indeed a lot of actresses has only made one show up in the acting business. One single role in their entire life in MacGyver.

Great ep! I love the moments of suspense near the end. Them getting away seems hopeless, but Mac being who he is...and then they're nabbed at the end. Great cliffhanger!

Pete has a great line in this ep! It's real easy to miss cuz it's kind of in the background.
Pete is explaining that Mac's a troubleshooter to the Chinese guy (forget his name and I just watched it this AM!). The guy says, "I trust we are not expecting trouble." Somewhere in here the scene cuts to Tonya with her binoculars and in the background you here Pete's response: "You know me: belt and suspenders."
Once I caught it I thought that was too funny! So like Pete to be planning for every possibility, while his counterpart, Mac, makes it up as he goes!
Don't know what it is exactly, but I really like the scene where Mac's "testing" the security system. Using the powder to see the laser beams and using his SAK blade as the key, I think was one of the MacGyverisms that really turned me into a MacGyver fan.
Even know, thats kind of the icon MacGyverism scene for me.

I am watching this one right now.
I agree with Rock about the MacGyverisms--awesome!!
And to me the best part is Jack Dalton as a magician, ready to get himself killed or at least in a whole lot of hot water for Mac. I love seeing Jack worried about Mac for once instead of the other way around.
Don't get me started on Lisa, again.
"For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
what to say about Lisa at first we feel sorry for MacGyver and Lisa. MacGyver for seeing his love die two times, once fake and the second time for real.
I just rewatched parts 1 and 2 last night. You know, I think this may be my all-time favorite episode (counting parts 1 and 2 as a single episode). It struck the perfect balance of action, humor, and romance, and showcased the friendships between Pete, Mac and Jack (always a good thing.) Best of all, there were plenty of "Oh S--T!" moments. And, as an added bonus, the acting actually wasn't too bad... a problem that plaques many otherwise good Mac episodes. Yeah, "Lost Love" is definitely among the series' best, as far as I'm concerned, and easily the best 2-parter ("Holy Rose" was partially ruined by Zoe, and "Good Knight MacGyver" was ruined by, well, the fact that it was an incredibly stupid idea from the get-go.)
One thing that invades my thoughts while watching this episode is "Why is the wardrobe department so mean to RDA?" - Making him wear that hideous pink shirt.

What do you think the origin of his ring is? He was wearing it and gave it to Lisa who had to wear it on a necklace. It's funny, we never think of MacGyver wearing a ring so I wonder where it came from.

It looked like a class ring... which would be a very odd thing to wear on a covert mission--unless it was to establish an identity (other than his real one) It is a device that has never made much sense to me.
Everyone, sometimes, needs a camel.
Old troubleshooters never die... They just wait til the last moment and then rescue themselves!
Yeah that's a good question. I don't think we see it any other time before that episode do we? Which would mean that it's a "plant" for that episode.
It would be nice to think that maybe the ring was his fathers and he wore it in memory of his father. that would also make it all the more special that he gave it to Lisa. But the fact that we don't see it any time before that episode makes it less-plausible.
Yeah, I don't think there is any history to that ring. Some writer probably just thought it would make for a nice scene, and that's it. We never see or hear anything about it before or since. The fact that we're even discussing it is probably evidence that we're giving it more thought than the writers ever did!

They should have taken a line or two to comment on what ring it was so we feel something other than confusion. I would have perfered it if he gave her his dogtags or a neckless with something on it. That would have made more sense I think.

Ah, the first part of a two parter. I think I'll post a more throughout review after watching the second part again, but here are a few observations:
I was impressed by some of the helicopter stunts in this first part. OK, I have no personal experience on the matter, but you don't need to be an expert to see that some of the moves must be downright dangerous.
For some reason, I did find Mac's and Lisa's romance plausible. I did actually smile at the bedroom scene when Mac says "What's so funny?" and Lisa replies "*You* are funny!" Felt very natural. But I found it a bit hard to grasp that Mac really thought she was dead for real... of course, the circumstances at the time were rather rushed, *but*...
Jack makes a good magician. In fact, he did remind me a bit about a magician I met last year at a festival, where I was working back stage. I think you have to have a bit of a prankster in you to become a successful magician. The magician at the festival was a little more... sophisticated though.
Looking forward to watch the next part later tonight. A strong "Good" for this first part, next part will probably get an "excellent" if it's as good as I remember it.

I think this episode really started off the 3rd Season with a bang. I was very happy the filmmakers moved from LA to British Colombia. And the locations in British Columbia are very unique. I really like the way the filmmakers used the locations in British Columbia. The plot of Mac looking for his lost love while protecting a national treasure is very, very well written. I liked the scene when Mac was testing out the security system. Mac and Lisa's relationship plausible, even if the events and circumstances seem quite rushed. I really like Jack as a magician, The Great Sheldrake!!! And the disappearing act with Lisa was very cool. I was on the edge of my seat during the motorcycle chase. I thought for sure they were going to get caught several times during the action. The helicopter stunts were very cool. And some of those maneuvers were downright insane. The saw mill was a great location to use. That exploding jewelry was kind of a cool gadget. An "Excellent" episode. A great start to the Third Season.

I just watched part I and I have to say that season 3 is my favorite. The story, the action, the characters, all of it was great.
While I'm a huge MacGyver fan it's been over 20 years since I've sat down and watched any episode from beginning to end. I've re-watched seasons 1 and 2 and just started season 3.
For me, season three is when MacGyver came into its own. I think leaving southern CA and filming in Vancouver was the best thing that could have happened. Southern CA has been filmed to death. A show like MacGyver, that thought outside of the box, had it's best years when they filmed outside of the box (Los Angeles).
Is it me, or did the blonde Russian remind anyone else of Brigitte Nielson in Beverly Hills Cop II?
The one minor negative for me is the annoying voiceover work between the Russians during the motorcycle chase. I know it was necessary to let the audience know that the Russians in the van were in contact with the Russians in the helicopter, but still, it came off too much as voiceover dialogue and not real enough.

Oh, Without a doubt. The writers always tried too hard to steal from what was "current and hip" in another show or movie.

I like tall short hair blond with shoulder pads.
But I agree with MacJackson. Don't you think it's odd for instance that Mac was asked to find the Holy Grail while Indiana Jones already did that?

In watching this episode I realized that the character of Major Nicolaj Kosov, was first introduced in season one's "Thief of Budapest". In all my years of watching MacGyver, I don't think I ever put two and two together. Very cool that they connected Lisa to a character we saw Mac interact with in a previous episode, instead of making something up, where she was involved with a "bad guy" from Mac's past that we've never heard of or seen before. It adds depth to the overall storyline of the series.

Yep. I mentioned that on the last MacGyver podcast. youtube.com/macwjack Don't feel bad. It was two different actors and they kind of let it slide by. I think you would only catch it after multiple viewings:)

It's funny you say that because RDA said in an interview (I forget which one, but I think it was a Stargate related one) that he was a fan of Indiana Jones.
I love that MacGyver mentions that Indiana Jones already did that and he saw the movie. XD
I remember when The Last Crusade came out. We saw it multiple times in the theater. My father idolizes Indiana Jones.
As far as the episode, I like part 2 better because I love the scene where MacGyver and Jack steal the dragon.
I agree about what MacFan092985 said about Season 3. That was when I really started to get into the show. I had actually skipped most of Season 2 so I could watch Widowmaker, which I remember on it's original airing. I did go back and finish Season 2... lol

Although I do have to admit that scene in part 1 where MacGyver meets (what ever her name is) on the boat always gets this old fart a bit teary eyed. I really like that bit of music that plays during that scene.

I really liked this two-parter, this sort of international intrigue is the kind of stuff I like to see on MacGyver. One nitpick I have is MacGyver got over Lisa's death too quickly. He showed no signs of grief when he revealed where he hid the jade dragon. There should have been one scene of him with Pete and Jack or both, reacting to Lisa's death and being consoled by them.
Also, what was up with the theme music at the start of part 1? It was like they were trying to come up with a new sound for the theme but only got to the rough draft stages and then the producers approved it. They must have realized it wasn't too good since the very next episode featured a new version, which was really just a shortened variation of the season 2 theme, which then became the theme for most of the rest of season 3.
::watches MacGyver break through the Ming dragon security system without breaking a sweat::
It's slightly terrifying to imagine how successful MacGyver would have been if he'd ever turned his talents to being an actual professional thief. He'd have had Arsène Lupin and A. J. Raffles relegated to the kids' table in barely a month.
