I remember, as a naïve teenager, trying the fertilizer and engine starter wrapped in paper to make a bomb trick, from Last Stand.

Of coarse I was unaware that they had left out the vital ingredient to make it work!

So who else has tried replicating a MacGyverism?

FESS UP!!

Where'd you get the minisub, MGD?

rolleyes.gif Stole it from some Arab country. I'm an international spy.
Nah, all you need is a ladder. I had such a double bed, one down and one up. I used that ladder and a toy gun a rubber bullet and a piece of rope. Just make sure you can trigger the hamer so it can fire.

I'm afraid I'm just not smart enough (or I don't see the world in the right way) to do my own MacGyverisms. Plus, I knew a long time ago that they altered the stunts for TV by leaving out one ingredient. Darn! But I can see why... they didn't want kids blowing their own houses sky-high.

Dose using Duct tape on clothes as a temperay fix count? Or Useing a head band Paper clips and the ear phone you stick in you ear to make them more comfy also count?

in the one episdoe were mac gets locked in a room with the key stuck in the other side of the door and he puts the map under the door and pushes the key out the other side with his sak. i did that when i was younger. i also used some fishing line hidden at the bottom of the stairs to trip my brother which was always sneaking in my room so i boobytrapped it.

used a bit of sting and a paper clip to make a kinda fishing rod thingy for getting the wires out from the back of the computer wink.gif i'm forever pulling out the scanner to use it and 'pop' out comes the wire... and the gap is too small to get a hand down there and the desk + computer + monitor are to heavy to move, so i keep my little invention my the side of the computer

I used tin foil to fix my tv remote
Duct tape on my sump pump
Paperclip on my umbrella

I can't remember if Mac did something like this. But in my old truck I got a leak in my fuel line when I was driving during vacation. So I took a bic pen and removed everything where I just had the tube. So I pulled apart the fuel line and put the tube in one end. then I reconnected the other tube to the pen and put duct tape on it. I was able to start my truck and use for awhile.

Mac used a ball point pen to fix a fuel line in "Three for the Road".

I live out in the middle of nowhere and am in the currently engaged in what I'm calling the 'MacGyver Edition of a Home Improvement Show' as I creatively renovate my house, so I tend to be pretty resourceful. Last night, I had a Murdocism, of sorts. I got home to find that I had no phone service. So, I schlepped out to the junction box with a ladder, a roll of duct tape, and my SAK... and got the phones working again. Until last night, that line of Murdoc's in 'Strictly Business' about being able to fix the phone line with duct tape was pretty funny, until I proved it could be done! laugh.gif

Hummm... just what exactly did you do... with the ducktape to fix the phones (what was wrong with them in the first place??)

I never knew that. huh.gif
That's very clever & sneaky of them.

Mac:

The cables hung straight down from the junction box, so the only support for them was the flimsy copper wires. Over time, the copper wires gave way. I used the duct tape to secure the wires to the pole so that they wouldn't just hang there and then reconnected the copper wires. I called the phone company after to ask them to come do a 'proper' job next time they're out here and they put me as a 'low priority' because they can't do much more than what I did, except install some sort of bracket to replace my duct tape. This repair proved to me that you really only need three things to do just about everything--duct tape, a SAK, and WD-40.

Yep, I remember an article about the show in a kid's science magazine years ago (this was before I actually started watching the show). They quoted RDA as saying the reason for the alterations was "so the kids don't blow up the kitchen." laugh.gif

It must have taken a lot of special effects to get the results they wanted! And this was in an era where special effects were still a bit on the crude side.

My macgyverism is two items Mac has used. I went to the mall today with my girl. Well I had to wash my hands and went into the restroom. Well there were no paper towel. But there was a closet where they keep it. Well I had a plastic sword I got out of my drink when I was at AppleBee's earlier that day. So I used the plastic sword and the flat head screwdriver on my SAK to unlock the door. And it worked like a charm....MacGyver would have been proud.

Made me an electromagnet out of a nail and a battery when I spilled a box of pins on thick carpet. It was inspired by "Phoenix Under Siege" where MacGyver disarms the "New York lock" door brace terrorists put on a fire exit by making an electromagnet out of a fat battery and an iron bar.

Well, how else I was going to get all those sewing pins out of the carpet and back in the box ?!

I sometimes wish I had tried, but I've never found the time or need or remembered to try it. That and I might actually blow something up--- I am not really a scientist... I haven't even taken chemistry yet except for a basic beginers class...

I tried several MacGyverisms.
One in particular: that one used in Eye of Osiris when he tries to "copy" the print after the plate has fallen into the sand.

Now I'm curious. What were you trying to make a cast of?

I remember as a kid trying to make a cast of what I believed to be a deer print (can't for remember why I was doing that?!) but I got bored waiting for it to set and wandered off and when I came back there was just a muddy trampled mess where the print had been laugh.gif.

It was the paw print of my previous dog.
Didn't work though.... dry.gif

(talking about -isms, this is a little off topic; there's a commercial on TV from Citroën; from a light bulb they make a car, now how's that for an -ism? biggrin.gif )

Well, this wasn’t exactly a MacGyverism . . . but it was from the show.

A while back, I attended a weekend workshop on self-defense – basically “how to get away from an attacker”. I’d arranged to attend with a friend of mine who tops me by about half a foot and outmasses me by at least 30 lbs, all muscle; and he’s had real martial arts training, while I never formally learned more than how to fall safely. (My fighting repertoire consists entirely of dirty tricks.) I got knocked down a lot that afternoon.

At one point, when I had missed a hold and he had me on the floor (again), pinned on my back, I grinned up at him and defiantly asked, “Had enough?”

He laughed so hard I was able to wriggle loose. So, in a way, it worked!

I'm afraid the best MacGyverism I've come up with is making an emergency fuel/water funnel out of an empty 2-litre bottle by cutting off the bottom and throwing away the cap.

Well, Last ime I went camping, we spotted a car broken down on the side of the road. The driver had said the fuel line had had snapped and he had no tape to fix it. We decided to go the MacGyver way and use a Ball Point pen. It actually works. We followed him back into town, and it didn't miss a beat the whole way...

I have tried some at work and have come up with some real lulus. Some work, some don't. Especially when the maintence man at a nursing home couldn't come up with something to fix a call bell. Boy the looks I would get, especially if they worked. open.gif

I have magnetized a screwdriver, hiting it with other screwdriver, to pick a screw that fall in a place that was far reach of my fingers. Really work!. Mac uses this trick in episode NIGHTMARES.

one small part on the roof of my Jeep had a small hole in it, i layed some ducktape over it and it looks nice.

Here's an embarassing one. I went to the store and left my house keys IN my house, so when I came home I was locked out. After finding out all of my windows were locked I had to figure another way in or do what RDA did and smash a Window. Being that I rent I had to go with the first option. I looked up and "saw the light". I screwed the lightbulb of my porch lamp, smashed it, and picked my front door light. So, thanks Mac for the idea. biggrin.gif As proud of myself as I was, it didn,t lessen the trouble I got into with my husband. ranting2.gif

My last MacGyverisms and this really doesn't count because it was kind of a matter of life and death. I went into an asthma attack in the bathroom and to get me into the kitchen I had my husband go and get his four wheeled buggy, (you know the one where the front wheel swivel,) so that he call 911, I collapsed out of a chair in the kitchen. Then the squad used the buggy to get me to the stretcher. Kind of reminded me of the Faith Hope and Charity episode. And yes I know it doesn't really count. But I asked myself what would Mac do if he were there, and that is the only answer I could come up with.
Now my husband being an old Kentucky Boy can come up with all sorts of MacGyverisms.
