Episode 28 - Jack of Lies

MacGyver is asked by his adventurer friend, Jack Dalton, to help rescue a botanist being held in Central America. But once there, he realizes the botanist is really an old friend from the past.

Another good episode but it's a great episode to introduce our good buddy Jack Dalton.

Botanists. Botanist.

"Jack of Lies" is an awesome episode! Great episode to introduce Jack Dalton, as well as a great way to do it- having all of MacGyver's stuff gone! Jack almost reminds a bit of a happy-go-lucky rogue like Han Solo, but not exactly. :-)

And there's also the top notch MacGyverisms as usual. And we get to see Knight Rider's "Bonnie" (Patricia McPherson) too! Very cool episode, as always. sak.gif duct.gif

Excellent Mac & Jack Adventure!!! As already said "JACK OF LIES is an awsome, cool.jpg and great episode. We get to know Jack but especially the funny dynamic in their friendship. He lies to him, he gets him into trouble, he drives Mac crazy. But on the other hand he makes him laugh and we learn that Jack saved Mac's life, when he cut his air hose on a coral during diving. In the end he saves Mac again and (seem to) lose his own life for his friend.

"It's been said that the best gift a man could ever give another was his life. Jack was never one to settle for less than the best."

I like this episode!! It has some great dialogue moments between Mac and Jack. "Botanists? I thought sure I said Botanist" lol. Getting the feel of Jack Dalton was great!!

I loved this episode. This one always brings back memories. So do most eps, but this one is action packed, humorous and it has the Mac/Jack combo.

Btw, I liked this Mike much better than the later one from The Widowmaker

Posted by: j12752 5 September 2007 - 08:44 AM
I liked that one much better too. The second Mike didn't even seem like the original Mike, who was adventurous and sure of herself.

Love this ep! As some of you might know, I am obsessed by the photograph that Mac found in Jack's strongbox--so much so that I wrote a fic about it! happy.gif

I love the scene where Mac is lobing exploding oxygen tanks while Jack evades the Naughty Police... and Jack's line to Mac:

"Now tell me you're not having just a little bit of fun!" laugh.gif

And when Mac brings an orchid to Mike and kisses her on the cheek! wub.gif

Fun, fun episode!

Let us not forget: "Tricks o' me trade, Mac me boy-o, tricks o' me trade!" clapping.gif

"Tricks o' me trade, Mac me boy-o, tricks o' me trade!"

That is such a brilliant line! tongue.gif

Is it just me or part of the music in this episode sounds a lot like the music in Stargate SG-1 "1969"?

Posted by: MacsChick 9 September 2007 - 12:44 PM
It isn't just you--I can hear some similarities, but I don't think it's the same music. It sounds like loud '80s rock music to me, like a knock-off of the Top Gun soundtrack or something, while in SG-1's 1969, it had a "folksy," roots rock sound to it.

Posted by: Sheepy 9 September 2007 - 01:13 PM
I like the part of Mac saying

"Don't we need maps?"
(or something like that) biggrin.gif

And then Jack's reply and the look on his face; priceless! biggrin.gif

Its more llke... (this is NOT word for word - but oh, so close)

"Shouldn't we be using charts or something?" - Mac
"What?" - Jack
"Charts!" - Mac
"What's the name on the side of the plane?" - Jack
"Fly-By-Night" - Mac
"Ex-ACTLY!" - Jack

My favourite part of that exchange is Mac taking a second to think about the name of the airline. It's just so realistic!

Ah, I do love Jack... wub.gif

Mac

By the look of the runway where they ended up - and the fact that Jack had already been there, I don't think charts would've made any difference.

I noticed in this episode that Jack is like Mac in many ways; alway coming up with a plan. And Mac is like Jack at the end of the episode when he says "Tricks of Me trade old boy, tricks of me trade"

Jack also care about Mac and Mike when he pull out the SAK so that Mike can cut Mac's rope in hopes of stopping Jack. I would love to have a friend like Jack that can make me laugh and think about all the possilbities. sak.gif

Ah, Good Ol' Jack! wink.gif

I only watched this again (dvd) last night.

I loved how Jack 'borrowed' (for want of a better word) all Mac's stuff at his place!
The look on Mac's face when he realised that it was all gone, was priceless!!

I loved Jack in all the episodes he was in.

The whole episode was great fun. biggrin.gif

I think my favorite scene is the following:

"Please, Mac, don't go, I'm beggin' ya... whoahh!"
"JACK!"

Mac dives, and ends up on the floor with Jack swinging back and forth above him.

Cracks me up every time!!

Loved this ep! Classic Mac/Jack adventure at it's best. My favorite biggrin.gif

I wish Mike could have been in more episodes. She was great.

Another great moment:

"So what's the deal? Papa Thornton say you can come out and play, or what?"
"Yeah..."
"Good. Now, we go to plane, kemosabe. You follow."
(v.o.) "I know I said I was gonna slug him. But how do you hit a kid?"

I think I probably know this entire eppy by heart by now.

Outstanding episode. Love Jack, apparently like everyone else here, and love Mac's exasperated-older-brother relationship with him. Reminds me of the Calvin and Hobbes line "Being a parent is wanting to hug and strangle your kid at the same time."

Too many good quotes to list, most of them already listed.

No, the music didn't sound like "1969" to me, but does anyone know what it was (the rock song that's playing when they're flying to Central America, and again towards the end of the episode)? It's one of those themes I can hear once and have stuck in my head for months or years on end.

I LOVE this episode, for so many reasons.

Lots and lots of humor--as well in the dialogue (so many unforgettable one liners here, you've already mentioned some of them) as in the acting. Yet, the plotline doesn't come off too flimsy or cheesy, there is a serious undertone to this adventure.

It's also a really well done introduction of Jack Dalton, and his really complex personality. Yes, he's a notorious liar, but his friendship with Mac and Mike is genuine, and though he sometimes gets Mac into trouble by dragging him into various risky situations, he would never leave him behind and it's obvious how much they still care for each other.

I love Mike as a character! She is smart, adventurous, independent and seems to be reasoning much like Mac--it's evident that they've been close friends for a long time! (I agree with the other posters though--I prefer Patricia McPerson playing her).

Some great acting from RDA in this episode too! His anger seemed very genuine, especially when he found the heroin. And the way he showed his affection to Mike… heartwarming indeed.

I definitely understand why the producers kept Dalton as a reoccurring character, though I must say this first episode with him is probably the best. Having him drag a reluctant Mac around is getting a bit repetitive in the end.

I'd totally forgotten about the "trained dog on a short leash" comparison--those were my thoughts exactly regarding "The Lost Treasure of Atlantis" and that Atkins professor. Atkins initially had kind of the same approach with Mac as Dalton usually has… but that character failed, miserably, and I loathed both Atkins and LTOA… don't think I'm the only one. More about that later, in the relevant thread--but *that's* my definition of "trained dog…"

"Jack of Lies," however, gets an "Excellent" vote from me.

Jack Dalton is very humorous guy. Bruce McGill acted also in Miami Vice and played guy named Weldon, with same homorous, lying personalite. And nobody didn't knowed is he speaking true or not biggrin.gif wacko.gif

I had one issue with this episode. Mike is wearing bright white pants and spends most of the time sitting on the ground. Were those white pants coated on Teflon! roller.gif

Ha ha! I love this episode. I watched it with my little brother yesterday. He's always saying he hates MacGyver (just to get at me) but he did say once, last year that MacGyver was handsome... laugh.gif
Anyway last night I heard him mimick and quote, "Tricks o' me trade, Mac me boy-o, tricks o' me trade!", and when he was watching Final Approach last night he said he was enjoying it.
He's a secret fan... biggrin.gif

My favourite Jack episode! The "kidnapping" of Mac's stuff was so funny! "If you want to see your fridge alive..." laugh.gif

Jack certainly does not spend a lot of time thinking about the things that can go wrong. He had a line about MacGyver worrying to much and then Mac replied: "Somebody has to worry" (or something like that). happy.gif

Hm, how do I talk my sister into watching MacGyver again? hmm.bmp

He is crazy in good sort of way. At least he means well. Of course not telling Mac that the botanist is Mike was Jacks way of getting them together.

Posted by: Hawk 11 September 2020 - 06:29 AM
I won't be earning any new fans with this, but I'll share for the sake of variety - I wasn't the biggest Jack Dalton fan growing up. It took me a long time to even half-embrace his very peculiar brand of eccentricity. I think rewatching this has finally done it, though. Jack of Lies does a very good job positioning against a more balanced character (in Mike) and ultimately allowing him one final stab at redemption, which truly pays off. Ending the episode without flat-out confirming whether or not he was bluffing them all the way through really sold it for me. 4/5. I'm sold and eager for Jack of Spies.

Posted by: sylvain1888 27 September 2020 - 11:37 AM
Fortunately, the character of Jack returns in several episodes, without him the series would not be the same... 5 ⭐️

Well done to Bruce Mc Gill, he is there to "energize" the series and he arrives with flying colors and until his last participation ... Well done, thanks to him the series is completely different ...
