Every week I will be posting a new topic titled "Episode Discussion". In this we will discuss an episode, what we liked about it, what we didn't like, etc.
Episode 60 - The Spoilers
MacGyver and Pete need the testimony of a mountain man who witnessed toxic waste dumping. But his flashbacks to his time in Vietnam just might ruin their case.

A good episode that's why I voted good. Lots of fights, I think this is the episode that contains the most fights in the series. There like three fights in the episode. That's how I like it.

I haven't bought the DVD with this episode yet. But I remember I liked the episode, as every MacGyver episode biggrin.gif I voted for Good.

I think I have to agree with you on this one. I called for "good" on this episode too. I definitely liked the theme of fighting against pollution and I really liked Daniel Toberman's character, and I felt really sad for him when his dog died. (Wow, that's like the third dog to die on this show! sad.gif )
Definitely some good fighting in the episode- and a really cool MacGyverism with the smoke screen thing. So yeah, I think it was another good episode. sak.gif duct.gif

A very good ep. Having been a psych major, I liked how they wove Earthquake's PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome) into the storyline, and I liked how Mac gained his trust. I think this was before PTSD was really acknowledged much among war vets. Also of course liked the environmental theme of the ep.
And what was it with this show killing off dogs?? All in S3 too (at least, I don't remember any after S3.)

Oh, I forgot that. That was really sad sad.gif I always loved dogs, but because I live in a flat - I can't have one. Would be great if I could to take a dog with me to the woods...

Yeah, I almost forgot this is doggie death III. MacGyver trilogy of doggie deaths: Kill Zone, The Negotiator and The Spoilers.

You just gotta love the end of the show; when Mac is holding the little husky puppy in his arms. The ep was good, but the ending blew me away totally. (which is a positive thing)
QUOTE (Old Fan Jan 13 2006 @ 08:58 AM )
That last scene with the puppy reminds me of the last scene in SG-1 - "Singularity" where O'Neill gives the dog to Cassandra. It's a rule on earth...everybody has to have a dog!!
QUOTE (Lothithil Jan 13 2006 @ 12:00 PM )
I gave this show a 'Good' vote. I like the shows where Mac fights to protect the environment. It's a side of him that I admire, both of MacGyver's and of RDA's.
My favourite part is the end, when Mac gives Earthquake that dog....
Awwwwww! *melts happily*

Very nice! I agree with you guys about the puppy scene at the end! I melted! MacGyver is so sweet! wub.gif
I really felt for the poor vet, too. I was just as mad as he was when his dog was killed, and I liked that he cared about his dog so much that he wanted vengeance. A man fighting for his dog...now, that's what I call honorable!

The acting by Earthquake in this episode was memorable, because it was so bad. Toward the end when he's holding that guy against the railing, about to push him over, the scared look on the guys face is ridiculous and Earthquake doesn't look serious at all.
I had no idea toxic waste was bright pink, though.

This *could* have been an excellent episode... had it not been for the fact that some elements came off *way* too cheesy.
Yes, I'm very much aware of that I need to watch MacGyver with my 80's glasses on, but some things are way over the top anyways, when it comes to "The Spoilers."
"Earthquake"'s character was almost hysterically bad... I think it's mostly due to bad acting. The way he delivers his lines... and all these "ARGGHH" and "WAAAAH" sounds in between... it just makes me cringe. Which is such a pity, since I doubt the writers really imagined him like that. He was a haunted war veteran, and I think I'd felt so much sympathy toward him had he come out right... but now, he just makes me laugh.
There are still many companies dumping toxic waste in illegal places, but I doubt there was ever any toxic waste looking like that pink slush... waayyy to much over the top there too.
I'd be very nice if I voted "Good,"... and I don't feel overly nice today. It's an "OK", but a strong "OK."

I thought was extremely poor, laughable acting from the ridiculously named earthquake, forgettable story, just one macgyverism, very forced interaction with the vietnam veteran. It goes easily into my top 5 least favorite macgyver episodes of all time

Actually there is.
The toxic by-product of factory pig farms is pink sludge.
Pigs produce 3 time more fecal waste than humans. In North Carolina that equals 40 million gallons per day. The farms store it in large open air ponds called lagoons where it turns highly toxic and pink.

One episode that helps to put you in someone else's shoes. Other than the main environmental idea, you can kind of get an idea of what the man (Toberman) has dealt with. Pretty decent writing here.

I'm doing geographical continuity again... but between Toberman getting off a Las Vegas to LA bus and the Widowmaker being in a reasonable distance from LA, there is probably a high plateau with a cold climate in Southeastern California in the MacGyver universe
Other than that, yeah, I do feel sad that the environmental apect of the episode is still holding up today.

The Spoilers topic from Think-Tank was missing so I post to here. I just barely saw that Steve Blalock again replaced Rick in some parts in that fighing scene.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you. It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

Fantastic moment, I had fond memories of it and it is still intact, I love the characters, the story and the turn of this dark affair ... From the big Mac.
