Chapter X
Area 51
Nevada
Five Weeks LaterMacGyver was laying unconscious in the desert. He was still wearing his astronauts suit. Moving was hard for him as his knee hurt again. The morning sun burned on his body. He was thirsty and very tired. His vision was blurry when he slowly gained consciousness. He saw a black dot against the horizon. It was coming closer and more dots appeared. MacGyver tried to see things more clearly but he just couldn’t, he was too weak for it. He was fairly surprised that he was still alive, that he didn’t bled to death.
The dots came closer and closer, pretty fast. The dots were actually jeeps and trucks from the army. MacGyver had no idea where he was or why the army was coming. His powers had left him. The jeeps came closer to him and stopped several feet in front of him. The soldiers ran up to him with their guns in their hands.
‘Oh, my god,’ one of the soldiers said. ‘Look at his knee.’
‘He needs to go to infirmary ASAP,’ another one said. ‘Come on, help me with him.’
They dragged MacGyver into one of the trucks and drove him to some facility inside of a mountain. He was strapped down on a stretcher and brought to the infirmary.
‘Nurse, doctor, we found somebody outside in the desert. He needs medical attention right away,’ the soldier said.
‘Yes, sir,’ the nurse said.
In a flash the operation table was ready, to take care of MacGyver’s injuries.
(The music fades away here)
MacGyver woke up in a room. Strange surroundings. He was a wreck. There was someone with him in the room. It was the nurse who was with his during surgery.
‘Wh- where am I?’ MacGyver asked with a lot of trouble.
‘Just relax,’ the nurse said with a soft voice.
She took a washing cloth, made it wet to cool his face a little. ‘You’re safe now.’
‘What happened? Who are you?’
‘I’m nurse Kelly Rhoades.’
Kelly Rhoades was a young woman, halfway her twenties. Half long blond hair and intense blue eyes. ‘I don’t know, what happened to you? I guess, you’re the one, who’s got the all answers.’
‘I can’t remember anything.’
‘It’ll come back,’ she said reassuring.
There was something around his leg.
‘What’s this thing, I keep feeling?’
‘Bandages. When they found you, you were terrible wounded. I can’t believe you survived whatever you went through. Your knee was shot but we couldn’t find a bullet. If they didn’t find you on time we had to amputate.’
‘Is it me or is it hot in here?’
She placed her hand on his head.
‘You still got a fever.’
MacGyver tried to put his hand on his head. It indeed felt warm. Then he noticed he had an I.V. at his arm. Nurse Kelly placed his hand back under the sheets. MacGyver saw the bandages on his left arm as well.
‘It’s good to have you back among the living,’ she said.
‘Why? Was I dead than?’
‘For a moment there, we feared for your life.’
‘I’m known to be quite a fighter.’
‘Yeah, you pulled through, but you’re still are going to have to take it easy for some time.’
MacGyver nodded.
‘You’ll be alright. What’s your name, anyway?’
There was an intense moment of silence. He had to think real deep to remember his name. What was his name? He wasn’t to surprised that he couldn’t remember what happened, but his own name.
‘I think the last time they called me by my name it was… MacGyver,’ he said.
‘MacGyver, huh? That’s a good name.’
‘Glad you like it.’
‘Well, MacGyver, I’m glad you’re okay. You’ll be just fine. If you wanna talk, give me a sign and I’ll listen, okay?’
MacGyver nodded again and then she left. She was hardly out or two soldiers came up to her.
‘What can I do for you, boys?’
‘Is he awake?’
‘Yes, but he’s not up for questioning yet, not for the next days.’
MacGyver heard them talking outside and heard the word “questioning”.
‘Questioning?’
Usually something bad is going to happen when that word is used. Could he trust that nurse? The voice of the nurse he could hear it say: ‘He’s my patient, alright? He’s not up for this yet. When he’s ready I’ll tell you and that’s it.’
She left the two soldiers behind to do her other work.
‘So what do you wanna do? Go into his room?’ one soldier asked.
‘Maybe she’s right. It’s way too early for this,’ the second one said.
‘But we’ve been waiting for all this time.’
‘And I guess waiting a little longer won’t harm us.’
Another few days passed while MacGyver actually did nothing else but rest and rest. He was recovering with good and bad moments. He had to sit in a wheelchair often and walk with crutches. His face was better and the fever was gone. He was still weak but he was ready for a talk with nurse Kelly. She entered his room.
‘MacGyver,’ she greeted him.
‘Kelly.’
‘You wanted to talk to me?’
‘That’s right,’ MacGyver said while he tried to get up.
‘Hold it right there, mister. Where do you think you’re going?’
‘I wanna talk but not in here. I wanna go outside, the inside is making me crazy.’
‘OK, then. Let me get your wheelchair.’
Kelly brought him his wheelchair and took him outside. There was not much to see outside except desert, sun and soldiers. MacGyver still didn’t knew where he exactly was, but he was going to ask Kelly.
‘Just wait here, I’ll go get a chair for myself.’
A few moments later she came back with a chair for myself.
‘Alright, Kelly, before I tell you my story I’m going to ask you a few questions.’
‘Go ahead.’
‘Where am I?’
‘Um… that’s a simple question with a simple answer but too difficult to explain.’
‘Try me.’
‘MacGyver, the passed few days, you might have noticed that this isn’t an ordinary hospital right? You’ve got the desert, intense heat, soldiers. This is a military base.’
‘I was that far already, but where exactly am I?’
‘This is a restricted place, there aren’t many people who knows this place. You’re in…,’ Kelly paused for a moment before. ‘You’re in Nevada, Area 51.’
‘Area 51?’ MacGyver asked.
He could understand he was in Nevada, but Area 51?
‘You’re doing researches here for UFO’s?’
‘That and extra-terrestrials.’
Normally MacGyver would find that rubbish but after what he went through. Now he also understood why he was there.
‘That’s why!’ he said a little cheerfully.
‘What?’ Kelly wanted to know.
‘Kelly, what I am about to tell you, may sound a little unbelievable but it’s the truth.’
‘Tell me.’
‘I work for a place called the Phoenix Foundation. Does that mean anything to you?’
Kelly thought of it for a moment. ‘I never heard of it.’
‘It’s a think tank in Los Angeles.’
‘You’re from L.A.?’
‘That’s right. They’re also doing researches for the environment, they’re involved in political matters. In short they do all sorts of stuff.’
‘So what is it that you do for a living?’
A question asked so many time before, but he was used to it.
‘I work as a troubleshooter there. They sent me to some place where I do what I can to help. When I was away in Turkey, my girlfriend Maria Romburg had an assignment in Rio from which she never came back.’
‘What happened?’
‘I went after her with two of my friends. I flew to the jungles of Brazil where a delegation of Phoenix were constructing a building for further research,’ MacGyver paused for a moment before he continued. ‘It seemed to be a conspiracy where in many of my enemies were part of. Including my arch nemesis Murdoc as well. In my first attempt to rescue my girlfriend I failed as they caught me and tried to make me insane. I escaped, which is one of my specialties and I rescued Maria. But this Murdoc, he’s always been playing games on me. He worked for an organisation called Homicide International Trust.’
‘What kind of organisation is that?’
Kelly got a more and more intrigued in MacGyver’s story. It was an incredible story though.
‘They train hit men and send them out on international missions. Anyway while I was after Murdoc, we went deeper and deeper into the jungle. We ended up in a old cocoa plantation. He locked me up there, I escaped again and we started all over. He tried to escape from me by going to space. Unfortunately for him, I was also aboard his ship. There he shot my knee and my arm after the final fight. I pushed the exit button and he got sucked out. I barely got back in the craft. It appeared he rigged the controls, so I had to escape with a small evacuation craft, that he also rigged. He placed a bomb in there. With the ejection chair, I got out of it on time and hovered around in space for some time.’
‘You, what?’
‘I know, how it sounds. I landed on the moon and I tried to sent an emergency call to earth. But because I weakened so badly from my knee, I collapsed and I thought that this was it. I was ready to die. Again.’
‘Again? What do you mean, again?’
MacGyver’s memories of his coma last year were still fresh in his mind.
‘I was in a coma last year after I fell of a building.’
‘You tried to kill yourself?’
‘No, but that’s another story,’ MacGyver said and continued with his story. ‘I don’t know, how long I was on the moon, but I… and this sounds really stupid, believe me. A small spaceship came closer to me and the alien brought me to where I am now. This all happened a few days ago.’
‘A few days ago?’ Kelly asked. ‘That can’t be.’
‘Why not? What? What is it?’ MacGyver asked slightly panicked.
‘MacGyver, you’ve been here for five weeks, now,’ Kelly explained.
‘What?’
MacGyver couldn’t believe his ears. ‘Five weeks?’
‘What’s the date, Kelly?’
‘March the 9th 1991.’
‘Five weeks? But how could it be five weeks? It’s like this all only happened a few days ago.’
‘Remember when I told you, we feared for your life for a moment?’
‘Yes.’
‘You’ve been unconscious that whole time. You weren’t in a real coma or anything, it was just… well the story you told me sounded real exhausting. We gave you sleeping medication. I was against it but it were the doctor’s orders. We couldn’t risk it, you waking up during surgery.’
‘So, do you believe my story?’
‘The story is hard to swallow, but I don’t think you’re lying.’
‘And the fact that I was rescued by an alien?’
‘Maybe. If you work in a place like this, sometimes strange things happens.’
‘Name one.’
Kelly thought for a moment.
A long moment. MacGyver raised his eyebrows while waiting for the answer.
‘Kelly?’
‘When we found you here, one of the soldiers alarmed us. Even if you were rescued by an alien and brought here, our security system didn’t respond. And there was no reason why it didn’t respond. Maybe the guard at the entrance fell asleep, I don’t know. Strange, isn’t it?’
‘Yeah.’
‘One minute everything is very normal, the next minute you end up at our front door. What’s even more strange is that there aren’t any tracks or circles left behind. I went to take a look, because you’ll never know.’
MacGyver smiled. He felt she believed him.
‘So what was this thing about questioning?’
‘Sorry?’
Kelly didn’t knew what he was talking about.
‘When you left my room the other day, I heard you talking to some men about questioning. What’s that all about?’
‘About the same thing we’re talking of now. They want to do tests on you.’
‘What?’
‘Don’t worry. They’re not going to get their chance. I am the one who will be doing tests on you only to make sure, your knee will get fully healed. As far as I’m concerned, I will be letting you home as soon as I can.’
‘Yeah, my boss and friend is probably worried.’
(Now we hear some music while we go over from Nevada to L.A. then it fades away)
MacGyver was right. Pete was standing in his office at his window for a moment, looking out over L.A. thinking of MacGyver. He hasn’t seen or heard MacGyver for five weeks now.
‘Where are you, Mac?’ Pete wondered.
He’s been asking himself that question for the past five weeks now. He started to walk from left to right behind his desk.
Jack Dalton and Nikki Carpenter were with him in the office sitting at his desk.
‘Just relax, Pete,’ Nikki said.
‘Relax? How can I relax? We haven’t heard or seen anything from MacGyver for five weeks. Something happened out there with him.’
‘Pete, I can always take the plane and fly over the area again,’ Jack proposed.
‘Jack, you’ve did that so many times before and it resulted in nothing. He’s probably not even in Brazil anymore. If he was then he would’ve contacted me.’
‘The Brazilian government would also keep an eye out for him and contact us if he’d show up,’ Nikki said.
Pete angrily hit his desk of desperation.
‘When was the last time you’ve heard of Maria?’
‘I haven’t heard from her since the past two weeks,’ Pete said.
Nikki Carpenter rubbed her hands and then she covered her mouth pretending to cover up a yawn, while she was actually covering a mean smile.
What Pete didn’t know is that she killed Maria not so long ago after they came back from Brazil. She made sure that the body won’t be found.
She had to cover up another mean smile when she thought back of how she killed her. She snuck in the houseboat over night, grabbed a pillow and suffocated her under it. She disposed of her body out in the open sea.
‘Are you sure, Pete, that she didn’t go back to East Berlin?’ Jack asked.
‘Yes, I have and they haven’t seen her there,’ he answered while he sat down in his chair. ‘It’s like she just disappeared in thin air.’
‘Very strange.’
‘I just can’t sit here and do nothing,’ Pete said suddenly raising his voice.
He hit his desk again.
Jack and Nikki shared a concerned look.
‘You know, Pete, it’s almost noon. Why don’t we all go out and have lunch?’ Jack asked.
‘No thanks, Jack. It’s thoughtful of you, but I wanna stay near my phone.’
Then suddenly Willis bursts in Pete’s office.
‘We got him!’ he said overwhelming.
‘What?!’ Pete exclaimed out loud as he stood up from his chair. ‘Where is he?’
Also Jack and Nikki stood up.
‘We got a call from a nurse in Nevada.’
‘Nevada?’ Nikki wondered. ‘What is he doing in Nevada?’
‘I don’t know. She gave me a jumbled explanation about how MacGyver ended up there. I had MacGyver on the phone for only a second there. But he’s alive and out there.’
Pete’s face suddenly got very determined.
‘I’m going to Nevada,’ he said.
‘That’s what MacGyver asked for,’ Willis replied.
‘That’s great. I’ll fly you there,’ Jack said.
‘Mr. Dalton, that’s out of the question.’
‘Why?’
‘MacGyver is in Area 51 and the airspace above that location is a no fly zone.’
‘Area 51?’ Pete said confused. ‘Area 51, for god sakes.’
‘That’s where they have him.’
‘And how is he?’
‘When they found him, he was terribly injured, his knee was shot.’
‘What?’
‘But he told me they fixed him up just in time. If they weren’t time, he could’ve bled to death, or they would’ve amputated his leg.’
‘I don’t think, I want to hear this,’ he said and picked up his phone. ‘Helen, book me a flight to Nevada, now.’
MacGyver was brought back to his room by nurse Kelly.
‘Here we are again,’ she said.
‘Great!’ MacGyver said somewhat cheerfully.
Since he made the phone call with Willis he felt a lot better. He was wondering when Pete would show up.
Knowing, Pete, for all these years, he would take the first flight available. MacGyver figured that tomorrow his friend would be with him.
‘How do you feel, now?’
‘Better,’ he said smiling.
‘Let me help you,’ she said while she helped him out of his wheelchair.
MacGyver still limped but not as bad as before. It were only three steps from his wheelchair to his bed.
‘OK, back to bed with you.’
He grunted and sighed when he lay back down.
‘I’ll get your lunch, ok. I’ll be right back.’
She went out and came back with his lunch. ‘Here you are.’
MacGyver smiled.
(The music from the opening scene of Unfinished Business is heard here)
The L.A. penitentiary. Nikki Carpenter was sitting in the prisoners visiting room. She was waiting for Deborah. In front of her there was this big window and telephones. She sunk in deep thoughts about what happened five weeks earlier in the jungles of Brazil. What she did was extremely low. She betrayed MacGyver. The man who she used to work with in 1987-1988. They had their differences but they were friends. Until she turned her back on the Phoenix Foundation and him. Now, she didn’t know what to think of herself.
In front of her a door went open and Deborah was brought in. She sat down in front of her. They took their phones.
‘Deborah,’ Nikki said.
‘Who else? What’s up?’ (The music fades away here)
‘It’s MacGyver. He’s still alive.’
‘What?’ Deborah asked in disbelieve.
‘I just found out today.’
‘That’s impossible.’
‘Not if your name is MacGyver.’
‘How could he have survived something like that?’
‘I don’t know, how he survived. All I know is that they found him in Nevada. Badly injured. His kneecap was shot and he took another bullet in his arm.’
‘That was Murdoc’s doing.’
‘I know. From Murdoc there’s no trace, but that doesn’t surprise me.’
‘Damn it,’ Deborah said hitting the table. ‘So MacGyver is still alive?’
‘That’s right. Pete took a plane to Nevada. He’s going to pick him up there.’
‘I can’t believe this. Does Zito know?’
‘Not yet. From as soon as I heard, I came here.’
‘Well, maybe it’s not too late yet. Have you killed Maria Romburg?’
‘Little more then two weeks ago. Her disappearance worries Pete.’
‘Good. What did you do?’
‘I suffocated her with a pillow and dumped the body at sea.’
‘Sounds like the perfect murder.’
‘That may be,’ Nikki said getting more and more agitated by her deed, ‘but I ain’t proud of it.’
‘Hey, honey, it was your assignment.’
‘I don’t care. I’ve done enough damage. I don’t wanna rouse anymore suspicion.’
‘You little b*tch. You wanna back out of the plan?’
‘Deborah, there is no plan. The plan failed because of what happened.’
‘Plan or no plan. We’ll never stop to try and kill MacGyver. In fact I have some more assignments for you.’
‘I don’t care, I won’t obey.’
‘You do like you’re told. Or next time I’ll kill more than just your dog.’
‘I don’t have a dog, that was my neighbours dog.’
‘Whatever. But that’s the warning.’
‘And how are you going to kill me, when you’re stuck here?’
‘I’ll find a way. Now for your next assignment, I want you to kill Jack Dalton.’
‘Why?’
‘Think for a change. First you kill Jack, than you kill Thornton and than you kill MacGyver. He’s the cherry on the pie. It’s our back up plan.’
‘I started to wonder who’s the nut. Zito or you.’
‘You know what the consequences are if you don’t obey.’
Deborah hung up the phone and left. Nikki thought a few moments after she left. She got up herself and left the penitentiary.
Deborah was brought back to her cell.
‘Hey,’ she said to the guard.
‘What?’
‘Got a phone? I need a phone.’
‘Who’re you gonna call?’
‘Ghostbusters,’ Deborah said sarcastic.
‘Very funny,’ the guard said not amused and left without another word.
Deborah’s thoughts drifted away to MacGyver.
‘F*ck, he’s alive,’ she whispered.
She reflected back on what she and MacGyver been through. The way they met each other during painting class. The night in front of the fireplace. That was her favourite moment of their “relationship”. MacGyver wasn’t like her other victims. She felt something for him. The exact same feeling she had when she was after him in the woods. She got so close then. She had Pete and Jack. If Jack didn’t distracted her then, she could’ve had MacGyver.
The guard opened her cell again and threw her a wireless phone.
‘Two minutes!’ he said.
She dialled the number that would end up with Dr. Zito.
In the highly secured mentally insane asylum, Zito was being held. Just like before when he tried to teach MacGyver a lesson in evil.
One of the nurses brought him a phone.
‘It’s your shrink,’ he said.
‘Doctor Skinner?’
The nurse just lifted up his shoulders as if he could care.
‘Two minutes.’
‘Hello, doctor,’ Zito said.
‘Zito, it’s Deborah.’
‘Oh, I know.’
‘MacGyver is alive.’
‘Hohoho, you got to be joking.’
‘I’m not.’
‘How the hell is this frigging possible?’ Zito hissed between his teeth while he kept smiling.
‘No one in the world has as much luck as MacGyver.’
‘How do you know all this?’
‘Nikki was here. She told me they found MacGyver in Nevada. Knee blown to bits, arm injury. I don’t know how he got there.’
‘What about Murdoc?’
‘Not a trace yet.’
‘Damn it. Did Nikki finished her assignment?’
‘Yes, Romburg is dead. I wonder how that’ll affect MacGyver. I also told her she has to kill Dalton and Thornton as well.’
‘That’s good. Perhaps there’s still a slight possibility that we can succeed in our plan.’
‘I always believed in it, doctor.’ (Tense music comes up here)
‘I know that, my child.’
‘And what if we don’t succeed?’
‘There’s always a way in succeeding.’
‘But what if we don’t.’
‘Then this is goodbye. Goodbye, Deborah.’
‘If we have results, I’ll call you again. Goodbye, Zito.’
(The music and the screen fades out before we fade in again)
The next day, Pete arrived in Nevada. His plane landed on the tarmac and when the plane stopped, he tried to get out as soon as he could. He didn’t had any luggage with him. As far as he was concerned he would leave the same day again, if not a day later. Then again it all depends on how long it takes to get MacGyver. He left the terminal and called for a cab.
‘Taxi!’
He entered the vehicle.
‘Where to, sir?’ the driver asked.
‘It might be a strange destination, but Area 51 please.’
‘I’m sorry, sir, but that’s a restricted area. No tourists allowed,’ the driver said starting the engine of the cab.
‘I’m not a tourist,’ Pete said sounding like a businessman.
‘Business?’
‘Yeah, sort of. I come to pick up a friend. A colleague.’
‘And he’s in Area 51?’
‘That’s where he’s recently been located, yes.’
‘Then I’ll take you there.’
‘That’s all I want.’
For the rest of the cab ride, the driver kept Pete busy with stories and news, he wasn’t interested in. He just wanted to go as fast as he could to MacGyver.
They left the city and drove on the roads that crossed through the deserts of Nevada. It was getting hot in the cab. Pete loosened his tie a bit and opened his window. The ride lasted for at least another twenty minutes before they came at the gates of Area 51.
‘Hold!! Hold!!’ one of the soldiers said. ‘You can’t go through here, sir. You just have to turn around. It’s a restricted area.’
‘I got a special passenger. He said he has to be here,’ the driver said.
‘I’ll take it from here,’ Pete said and got out of the car after he tied his tie again. ‘Excuse me, sir. I’m Peter Thornton of the Phoenix Foundation.’
Pete showed his Phoenix ID and continued on a formal tone.
‘I received a call that one of my employees was located here. A man named MacGyver.’
‘Ah yes, him. We found him here five weeks ago.’
‘That’s a relief,’ Pete said while leaving some breath of relief. ‘How is he?’
‘When we found him, he was pretty messed up, but he seemed to recover fast.’
‘That’s a load of my mind. Can I go see him?’
‘Sure.’
‘Thank you,’ Pete said gratefully as he entered the cab again.
The cab drove on till they got to the main building of Area 51.
‘Just wait here,’ Pete said and he walked in the building.
MacGyver’s room. He was getting excited to leave and finally go home again.
Nurse Kelly entered his room.
‘Hey, MacGyver.’
‘Hey, Kelly.’
‘How are you feeling today?’
‘Couldn’t be better.’
‘And the knee?’
‘Seems to work fine but it still hurts.’
‘Let me take a look at it.’
She took off the bandages and looked at his swollen up knee.
‘Does it hurt if, I press here?’ she asked as she gently pressed his injury.
‘Ow, that hurts.’
‘Here?’
‘Same thing.’
‘I can always rub some gel over it.’
‘If that would it make it better, I have no objections,’ MacGyver said smiling.
‘I’ll be right back,’ she said and left the room.
Few moments later she came back with the gel and rubbed it over the healing wound.
‘How long do you think it’s going to take for me to walk again?’
‘Usually it takes for someone six weeks. You already lived five of them,’ she said smiling.
‘Sounds good.’
‘With any luck by the end of next week.’
‘Alright.’
‘Done!’ she said as she finished the care of his knee.
Then someone knocked at his door.
‘Hello?’ a voice said.
MacGyver looked surprised to Kelly. That voice. He recognised the voice.
‘Pete?’
‘MacGyver?’
‘Pete, come in.’
Pete entered MacGyver’s room. They shared a look for a moment.
‘Pete.’
MacGyver got up somewhat anxious and almost collapsed again because of his knee.
‘Just relax,’ Kelly said while helping him back up.
‘Don’t force yourself,’ Pete said.
MacGyver limped up to Pete. (Uplifting music is heard here)
Pete was devastated to see him limp like that. When MacGyver came up to him, they warmly embraced each other. They both had a laugh for a moment. The past five weeks were like hell for the both of them, but now they found each other back.
‘Good to see you, Mac. I missed you,’ Pete said. (The music fades away here)
‘It’s good to see you to, Pete.’
‘MacGyver, where have you been?’ Pete asked.
‘That’s a long story, Pete. Take a seat,’ he said pointing at chair near the table.
‘I’ll just leave the two of you here,’ Kelly said and left the room.
‘Good looking girl,’ Pete said.
‘I know. That’s Kelly. She took care of me the past five weeks.’
‘So what happened?’
‘It sounds very unreal but after I chased Murdoc down in the jungle, we went deeper and deeper in it.’
‘To the cocoa plantation?’
‘Yeah, you…?’
‘Yeah, I followed your trails till we got at a dead end.’
‘Pete, Murdoc had a spacecraft.’
‘A spacecraft?’
‘He knew, I’d follow him around. He had the ultimate situation worked out. He took me outer space. That’s the best hunting ground there is. Inside of a spacecraft in the middle of nowhere. No escape.’
‘And?’
‘Well, the usual. Distractions. Changing one thing into another MacGyverism. The mostly unnecessary blows. I’m used that by now when it goes with Murdoc. I lured him to the exit. He blew my kneecap off and shot me in the arm and I sucked him into space.’
‘Sucked into space?’ Pete asked amazed. ‘Well, then we’re rid of him forever? Getting sucked out, no one survives.’
‘Pete, he blew up once, he fell of a mountain and drowned and each time he survived.’
‘That’s true, MacGyver but getting sucked out in space. Not even Murdoc survives something like that. Murdoc is dead for sure this time,’ Pete said assured.
‘You never know with Murdoc,’ MacGyver said a little worried.
‘You could be right.’
‘So after Murdoc got sucked out, I decided it was time to get out of there. He rigged the controls so I would end up going at the sun. With a small evacuation craft, I bailed myself out of there. He rigged it as well and planted a bomb. I ejected myself out of there with the ejection chair.’
‘You what?’
‘It was indeed risky but it sure saved my life.’
‘Then what?’
‘I floated around in space until I landed on our moon.’
‘The moon?’ Pete asked interested. ‘Have you seen something of July 1969?’
‘The footprints looked like they were made only minutes ago, the plaque was there, our flag and lots of garbage. When I tried to send an emergency call to earth, I collapsed of pain. Then I got rescued by… an alien.’
Pete looked up at MacGyver.
‘MacGyver! An alien?’
‘Uh… yeah. How do you think I ended up here? The alien brought me here.’
‘Nah,’ Pete said.
‘Still it’s true.’
Pete just bought the story, because he knew it would be not respectful towards MacGyver if he didn’t believe him.
‘So, how’s everything back home?’ MacGyver asked after a silence.
‘Not really good.’
‘How’s that?’
‘MacGyver, I have some bad news for you.’
‘What?’
‘Maria disappeared almost three weeks ago. No one has heard of her since then.’
‘How could she just disappear?’
‘We don’t know. I checked her files and called addresses in East Berlin. She’s not even there.’
‘Have you called Otto yet?’
‘He’s nowhere to be found.’
MacGyver sighed as if his problems well never stop.
‘Look, MacGyver. The best thing we can do now, is get you home. There’s nothing you can do about this now.’
‘You’re right, Pete,’ MacGyver said. ‘It is time for me to go home.’
‘Then let’s get out of here.’
MacGyver was quickly ready since he only had one set of clothing with him and that were the ones he wore when they found him. He just took his crutches and walked away with Pete.
They were walking towards the exit when they met nurse Kelly again.
‘You’re going, aren’t you?’ she said with slight sadness in her voice. (Slow sad music comes up here)
‘Well, yeah, Kelly, I have to.’
‘MacGyver, just take of yourself, ok?’
‘Yes ma’am. Thanks for taking care of me.’
MacGyver and Kelly embraced.
‘Will I ever see you again?’
He gave her his phone number.
‘You bet. Call me, ok?’
‘I will.’
‘Oh, before I forget… what did you do about the soldiers questioning and doing tests on me?’
‘I talked them out of it. I convinced them that you were just another human being and that you were being sane enough. I also told them that I’m the only one doing the tests with patients.’
MacGyver smiled.
‘I have to go now.’
They hugged once more and then they both parted ways.
Pete led him outside to the cab and they drove back to the airport to take the next flight back to Los Angeles.
(The music turns suspenseful here)
It was night in Los Angeles. The city was full by teenagers that went out. Hollywood Boulevard was the busiest street in the neighbourhood. Everybody wanted to see the latest films with their favourite actors and have their fun.
That fun wasn’t meant for Jack Dalton, who was still working in his hangar. His plane was his obsession. He was always trying to get the plane better, so it would make him rich some day but the sooner the better.
Silently another individual entered the half dark hangar. Jack didn’t hear or see anything because he was so busy on his plane’s engine. He stood on a big ladder, working on it. Something fell over in the hanger causing an echoing sound.
A little startled Jack looked up.
‘Hello?’
Only his echo answered that call by repeating the phrase. Then nothing anymore. Jack lifted up his shoulders and figured it was nothing. He finished his last adjustments and placed his wrench away.
‘All done.’
He got down from his ladder and wiped his hands off with an already dirty rag. Then he looked up. In the darkness he saw a silhouette of a woman.
‘Who’s there? Can I help you, ma’am?’
The sound of the trigger being pulled.
‘I’m sorry, Jack. Goodbye!’ (The music turns more tragic)
The shots were fired. Six or seven bullets when through his body. Jack felt his life being drained away, he was becoming cold. The woman came closer to his dying body. Then he recognised her.
‘Nikki?’
‘It was an assignment.’
She fired another three rounds in him and that was the end of Jack Dalton.
(The music reaches it's peak and we fade out again, then we fade in)
The next day, MacGyver and Pete came back home. MacGyver at least. Pete brought him back to the houseboat.
‘Welcome back, MacGyver,’ Pete said when he opened the front door.
‘Yeah, right.’
They both entered the houseboat.
MacGyver went to his couch and took a seat.
‘Wow! What a crazy adventure,’ he said
‘You can say that again. Are you alright?’ Pete asked when he brought in the mail and took a seat himself.
‘I’m fine, Pete. It’s just that Maria’s disappearance is worrying me.’
‘I’m worried about that too. I think the only way to find her is to wait for her to contact us.’
‘Maybe.’
‘MacGyver, I wish I could stay longer but I have to go home myself and Phoenix is also waiting for me. Is there anything else you need?’
‘Not that I know of. Just get the usual in the store. I think everything in my fridge is probably spoiled by now.’
‘OK, here’s the mail and I’ll see you tonight.’
Pete handed him a big pile of mail over. ‘Have fun reading those.’
‘Yeah.’
Pete left the houseboat and now MacGyver was finally all alone again, the way he liked it.
He started to open the letters and read them one by one. Mostly it were bills and taxes. Also a lot of junk mail. Things that are in commercial and stuff.
MacGyver then found a small envelope. There was a card in from Penny Parker.
“Greetings from the Bahamas,
It’s Penny here. I just wanted to write this beautiful card to the man that really cares for me. That’s right, you. Also to thank you for what you did for me the past few years. You’re a good friend and I hope I’ll see you soon.”
Love,
Penny Parker.‘Cute,’ MacGyver said.
He was busy opening another one when the phone ranged.
‘Hello?’
‘MacGyver?’ a voice said on the other line.
‘Yes, who’s this?’
‘It’s Kelly.’
‘Hi, Kelly, how are you?’
‘Good and you?’
‘I’m just fine.’
‘Good to hear you, now I know I shouldn’t be worried anymore.’
‘You were worried?’
‘Yeah, I hope that doesn’t sound silly.’
‘Not at all. You’re a nurse, of course you’re worried about the patients you take care of,’ he said while he opened the letter.
‘So what are you doing right now?’
‘Reading through my mails from the last five weeks.’ (Again tense music comes up here)
MacGyver’s look suddenly became serious when he was reading that last letter.
‘Kelly, can you call me back later?’
‘Sure, but why?’
‘Because my problems aren’t over yet. I’ll explain later.’
‘OK, sure. Tonight?’
‘Tonight. Sorry if that sounded a little blunt but I have to call my boss right away.’
‘No problem. Bye.’
He read the letter again.
“Dear MacGyver,
So things got out of hand in Brazil, right? Well then, I’m sorry to tell you things aren’t over yet. By the time you read this letter Jack Dalton will be dead. Sometimes innocent people does get hurt in a crossfire, don’t they? You thought you had all of us huh? Murdoc, Zito, Piedra, Axminster, me? There’s just one person more involved. Who it is, I am not going to tell. But this person killed Maria Romburg. If I were you, I’d watch the people I work with. There always could be an insider.”
Deborah.MacGyver took up the phone again and called Pete’s car phone.
‘Thornton here,’
‘Pete? It’s MacGyver.’
‘MacGyver! I was about to call you. I’m at Jack’s place. The place is infested with cops.’
‘Oh no.’
‘He’s dead, MacGyver.’
‘I know. I got a letter from Deborah, it says that when I read the letter, Jack would be dead.’
‘He’s shot.’
‘How could it be any one of them? Murdoc is really dead, so are Axminster and Piedra. Zito and Deborah are locked up. The letter also mentions something about an insider. Any ideas?’
‘No. It could be anyone.’
‘I can’t believe this Pete. Are there any witnesses there?’
‘Nothing, absolutely nothing. Nobody haven’t seen or heard anything.’
‘Look, come to pick me up. I wanna see Jack.’
‘OK, then. I’ll be right there.’
They hung up the phone.
MacGyver’s raged boiled up inside of him. He angrily threw the wireless phone away. (The music becomes more tragic)
‘Oh my God, Jack,’ MacGyver said in defeat trying to hold his tears back.
He knew Jack Dalton since high school and he was his best friend since then. They’ve been through some crazy adventures together with Mike Forrester or with Pete.
Jack always thought the three of them were invincible. Maybe they were at a time but fate has proven otherwise.
First Mike died on the Widowmaker and now Jack died by some unidentified killer. MacGyver was determined to find the killer from as soon he could walk again. No one touches or messes with his friends.
Jack Dalton was a good friend and he’s going to miss him.
They were brought together by Murdoc in 1980 and now eleven years later they’re going to fall apart because of a killer. But MacGyver wouldn’t let it happen. He’ll make sure that the ones who did this will get punished for it.
MacGyver let his face rest in his hands for a few minutes. He tried to focus on the silence in his houseboat. The silence was creepy and you could just feel the silence creeping around.
MacGyver was sunk in the deep thoughts when the phone rang again. He winced when he got up again from his bad knee.
It took a little effort to get up and limp all the way to the other side of the room to pick up the phone of the floor. He answered the phone.
‘Hello?’
Nothing.
‘Hello?!’
The silence was broken by a soft woman sobbing.
‘Nikki?’
Then the line got broken off.
MacGyver was shocked about the call. Though he wasn’t sure it was Nikki, he recognised the voice for the most part and it was the only woman he actually worked with in the Phoenix Foundation. He didn’t know what to do or think of it. But why would she kill Jack Dalton?
He couldn’t believe it, out of all peoples.
Nikki Carpenter?
