This is the extended opening gambit, which shows MacGyver returning to the Pentagon with the pilot he saved, and handing over the missiles arming system (which we saw him remove earlier).

This extended version was aired in parts of Europe, but, as far as I know, never in the US. Because of this, the video clip is in Czech.. So you probably wont be able to understand what they say.. But you’ll still get the general idea of what’s going on.

Mac and the pilot jumping from the cliff
Pilot: "What are we doing?!"
Mac: "Tell ya later!"

Major: "So what are you going to do?"
General: "We're busy right now, so what do you want, Major?"
Man entering room: "You know, sir, MacGyver, he's back."

*MacGyver enters the room*

General: "Captain Taylor! Oh my God they did it!
Taylor: "Yes, unfortunately Myers lost consciousness when the plane crashed and he didn't come out"
General: "And the missile?"
Tylor: "I'd rather let MacGyver tell you himself"
General: "Well?"
Mac: "Concerning the missile sir, I think they should be able to get the traction engine going but... without this *he fumbles in his jacket* they won't have as much fun

General and staff: "Great, well done!"

General: "Enough, enough. Please contact the office and tell them to cease the negotiations. Because we have the bomb now."

Did MacGyver go to the Pentagon in any other episode, or was the Pentagon ever shown in another episode? Because I'm thinking that Pentagon scene looked a little familiar- I wonder if maybe I did see it in the original airing...
Anyway- that's the kinda stuff that should be on the DVDs!

How bizarre - and interesting. Maybe it ran over time... maybe they didn't want Mac to seem too military... will we ever know the actual reason it was cut???

I'm thinking that its probably stock footage, so you wil have seen it before in different shows.

It ran here in Belgium too, those scenes and I find it despicable what they did.

Well, if that scene was never aired in the US, like Rock says, it makes you wonder why it ended up being aired in Europe.

Indeed strange, maybe the price was right.

So it was shown in Europe with the extension? Seems odd to show it some places but not others. I think the gambit ends best with the jump off the cliff without the scene after the intro but it makes me wonder if other scenes were shot and aired in some countries but not others.
There is obviously stuff out there that could have gone in to the DVD's if they'd actually cared enough to look.

They probably figured, they made it, there's no reason in showing the scene where they go back to the Pentagon. Though it was a good enough scene to show where Mac got the assignment from and from who.

Yeah- it is important for establishing who MacGyver is and who he works for. But I'm thinking that would be a better scene to open with after playing the theme song. The opening gambit definitely ends better on the high note of MacGyver rescuing the pilot.

Does anyone on here actually remember seeing this scene in the original airing? For European members, is this scene regularly aired in reruns?

Uh, yeah. I have it on the video. The original way of the opening sequence of the Pilot episode. The entire parachute scene with MacGyver's name appearing for the very first time on the screen in big blue letters with the white line across which later became the infamous red letters with the gold line across. Then after the theme music is over it changes to the Pentagon scene.
We Europeans don't cut scenes when it's not needed.
On the video I also have the scene that was cut from The Thief of Budapest. Putting the actual opening sequence with the altered explosion title in the Pilot episode was a BBBBBBIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGG mistake.

yeah on the DVD, the Thief of Budapest was cut.
on our television - whole theme (not the cut one on DVD), then some scene which isnt on the DVD (its on the broadcast DVD or something like that I think)

It's paramount.. it doesn't need a point.

Only reason I can think of that it might cut from the later airings is to make room for more commercials- as that definitely was the case during MacGyver's run on WGN- and I'm sure that's gonna be the case with its run time on any of the cable channels. And I'm with Sonyab- I do think I may have seen that when it first aired.... (though it's been many years so the memories are a bit vague)

After it downloaded on my apparently super slow connection, and then Rock posted the dialogue...this particular part kind of felt familiar...but I don't know.... It's probably been a few more years for me than it's been for MacGyver!
