I way just thinking that most of the problems that MacGyver had, could be solved just by a call with a mobile telephone. In the late 1980's, mobile phones were big like a fridge and expensive. But now, I doubt that MacGyver wouldn't have a mobile phone - and he could solve the problems the boring way.

Don't forget that MacGyver and the Phoenix Foundation works along with the government and that he is a special forces agent for a private organisation so maybe they'll get the privilege for it.

Isn't that sad? I understand that heightened security, but it's like a death knell for something that most every little boy (and some girls wink.gif ) dreamed of as a right of passage almost: getting that first pocket knife. sad.gif Well, Isaiah will still get one, when the time's right. Well, MacGyver would still stand out. If he and other government agents had to check in their weapons at a government building, everybody else would be checking in .45s or whatever and MacGyver would be checking in a Swiss Army Knife and duct tape! biggrin.gif sak.gif duct.gif
Security is good, but I do get kinda wistful for the good old days when a Swiss Army Knife was a Boy Scout's tool and not a weapon.

I had major problems at the airport this summer when I forgot that I had my SAK in my package (from a previous backpacking trip). The lady was nice enough to let me go back and check my bag in. I could've gotten one of those power crazy TSA agents and had my knife confiscated (I got it from my Dad when I was twelve). sad.gif

He's an ex special forces agent.
He has no special powers of immunity.
In fact if we follow the time line to present day...he wouldn't even work for the phoenix foundation today...so he would be just a normal citizen.

If he was just visiting the building to look around id imagine he'd leave it in the jeep, after all hes an intelligent man, 'a man of the mind' he would know in advance.
But i would still agree with the fact that MacGyver is doing jobs for the government and the pheonix foundation. Getting on planes are probably planes set up for him already specially and going to special buildings of history etc wouldnt be a problem as he probably didnt go through the front door anyway and if he did it would be in a rush from some sort of crisis or problem.
Getting in the Pheonix foundation might present a problem, maybe MacGyver would have clearence because of his reputation, or maybe he sticks to the rules which i bet he does and probably leaves it in the jeep.

For me now MacGyver at modern times would be working for Phoenix unofficially whenever he wants on perhaps smaller assignments, living somewhere quiet in the woods like Harry Jackson and doing stuff like he did in The Widowmaker, like fishing.

if MacGyver had to give up his SAK and that situation was in a MacGyver episode it propbably wouldnt bother Mac, he could make do without, he seem's the type of person that wouldnt make a big deal out of anything. He always seems to have a lots of patience with people. i often think what would mac do in some of the situations im faced with in life when i get frustrated or stressed.
Mac would find an alternate way of doing something if he didnt have the SAK

That's why I kinda find funny the list of items you cannot take into the airport or on an airplane. There are plenty of stuff on an airplane (not to mention the airport) you can wreck havoc with. You do not need a damn pocket knife. dry.gif

well im 26 now, if i spend the rest of my life learning to be a writter, director and actor maybe i could do the next 7 seasons of MacGyver, Richard dean anderson incuded.
i still think Richard D Anderson should do another couple seasons of MacGyver

You're starting to sound like me, Tomms. I'm in the twelveth grade, it's like another two years for me at least before I can go to filmschool. Another 7 seasons? Another 139 episodes??? Perhaps a young MacGyver starring Dalton James but I doubt for Richard Dean Anderson. Unless you can make a suggestion he can't refuse. On the other hand 2001-2005 were a few interesting political years on terrorism. Who knows perhaps he was in New York on 9/11 (I mean the character not the actor) Also the tsunami disaster in the East could make a great episode like Second Chance or a two-parter. However '24' is pretty heavy on terrorism subjects, but it would be indeed cool to see how the Phoenix Foundation handles in such matters of the past few years. That's why I'm trying to figure out a crossover story of MacGyver and 24. But I'd rather see a couple of movies then a whole new series for now at least. Sometime in the future I hope to make one of my own MacGyver adventures. Though you're right about RDA he still is the one and only MacGyver.

Yeah, MacGod, those kinds of ideas were what I was thinking of, too. It would indeed be interesting to see what kinds of solutions the Phoenix Foundation might have to terrorism. Another good one would be built around the Abu Ghraib torture scandal that surfaced last year. You could have Mac trying to persuade the powers-that-be that torture is NOT a good idea. If Mac was still on the air today, and an ep like that had run, it would have been very relevant and (I think) a big hit. The show today could focus on those kinds of moral questions and the idea of America's influence and proper role in the world.

You both be more creative than I! I hate metal detectors..... I'm always terrified that the thrice blasted things will go off for no reason.. which they often do. I don't carry my knife with me, it's not a SAK anyway.

they are a super great thing to have with you. i used mine today to take off face plates of wall plugs, and open paint cans. and pull nails out of the walls.
most of the time i use it instead of my SAK.
i know $35 seams steep for a "keychain" but trust me its worth its weight in gold!

yah, i got that one in the hogh voltage finish first, but i didnt like carrying it because the finish got buggered up a little, so i ordered the regular one in antique satain finish.
i dont go any where without my prybaby. it has sooo many utilitarian uses, it just great.

i play with mine all the time.
at work my boss got his keys and stuff locked in the middle drawer of his desk, so after he said "do what ever to get that open" i took my prybaby, wedged it in the seam of the drawer and kicked the prybaby down which broke the slide things the drawer rolls on.
that is a bit extreme but it worked. the only thing is 3'' dosnot give much leverage.
i plan on getting one of his bug out bars to add to my bag i keep i my truck.

I hear ya, Rock. What got everyone so over the top about this stuff was the fact that the 9/11 plane hijackers used box cutters. Box cutters were legal on planes up until then (only guns and, I think, very large knives were prohibited). So now, blades of ANY kind are prohibited on U.S. flights... and that of course includes our favorite tool. The thinking is that if you can hold up a plane using box cutters, you can certainly do it using a sak.gif .

You know they serve meals on planes with a metal fork and plastic knife... apparently metal stabbing objects can't be used to inflict injury! I'd REALLY like to meet the *bad word removed* who came up with these ideas and show him exactly what can be done with a *bad word removed* fork!!

They’re really not achieving anything other than infringing on peoples personal freedoms and rights.
I’ve heard adverts and seen messages about how we need to be ready for the next terrorist attacks (the government does a better job of terrorism and scaring people than the terrorists do) Well my idea of being ready is being allowed to carry a SAK in my pocket! Especially if I’m going into an area with a higher chance of attack.
Other countries are starting to slacken off their security for planes… and I don’t think they ever bothered with extra security on buildings. I know New Zealand and Australia don’t anyway.

Well I know over here in the UK, right after the 9/11 incident that people were stopped from going on planes if they were carrying nail scissors and anything they constituted as an offensive weapon (even tail combs with a metal end!!)

Actually, I have a device that is more a piece of steal with a bunch of forms cut out of it . and if you leave it in your wallet and send it through X-ray it isn't detected. It has a blade and some other cool things. I'll take a picture of it and link it when I have time probably tomorrow. If anyone knows what it is I would love to know its name.

I read the story (good idea with hiding a SAK!) which reminded me about my trip to the court in Mount Prospect last year, (speeding ticket of course  ). I was wearing a leather belt with NOT so big buckle but suddenly a security guy told me to remove it. "This too?" I asked, "Yes,It is a BIG buckle". Yeah...a perfect place to hide a pound of explosive plastic.... And we also should think about a new function for old-fashioned tweezers- right now they qualify as a dangerous weapon!...
