A ruined jacket.

A memory that haunts his days and changes his dreams to nightmares.

One more terrible image added to a thousand others.

And thirty-two stitches.

Thirty-two little strings of irritation.

Thirty-two tiny reminders of betrayal.

The sutures are gone now, but their marks remain.

Sixty-four miniscule imperfections, surrounding a thin white line.

A thin white line that runs across his arm and into his soul.

He wakes from sleep, fleeting images of sparks and two falling women searing themselves into his mind, and his hand unconsciously traces the scar.

He thought he’d gotten over it.

He was wrong.
