I know this is a short part, but I wanted to create a more positive mood for the ending. Enjoy!
Hidden Kisses Part Seven Rated: PG The scar on Vanessa’s shoulder, evidence of the violent and unintentional act MacGyver committed, was facing him in bed as she slept beside him, bared for him to see for the first time. He couldn’t sleep, the sight of it disturbing him. It was an ugly and permanent reminder of how close he had come to killing her, interrupting the smooth beauty of her skin. He tried to look away from it, but he couldn’t, focusing intensely on it. Even when she stirred and began to awaken, he was still staring at it. Her eyes opened, and she smiled at him, glad to see his face. The sun glowed behind him, accentuating his natural, rugged beauty, golden tinted hair, and soft brown eyes. He was what she always wanted, and now here she was with him. When she noticed that he wasn’t looking at her, his eyes fixed on some other point, her smile faded. “MacGyver, what’s wrong?” She asked, reaching up to touch his face. Aware of her voice, he shifted his eyes toward her. “The scar,” he said, looking back at her shoulder. “I did this to you. I don’t think I can ever forget that, especially not now.” “Then don’t,” she said. “Don’t forget it. Accept it and acknowledge that it’s over. I’m here with you now and I love you, despite what happened.” She stroked his chin. “I wouldn’t be here if I felt otherwise.” Smiling slightly, her words comforting him, MacGyver leaned in to kiss her. As he did, Vanessa took his hand. He felt her guide it and place it on her shoulder, directly over the scar. The uneven, fleshy texture of it made him stop. He opened his eyes and separated himself from her. When he tried to remove his hand from the scar, she held it there, looking at him with deep sincerity. “It’s all right,” she said. “I want you to touch it, to feel it. You need to realize that it’s there, that you can’t avoid it. It will always be there. That’s just how it is. Don’t let it get in the way of what we feel for each other. Get past it. I know you can.” He looked away from her, trying to remove his hand from the painful reminder of what he’d done again, and she only clasped his hand tighter. “Look at me please,” she said. “Then look at it. Know that this is the only time you have ever hurt me, and that it wasn’t your fault. You love me, and you will never hurt me again. Please, MacGyver.” Slowly, he did as she asked, her sweet, gentle, coaxing voice soothing and calming him. Sighing, he trailed his long index finger over the scar, tracing its irregularities. It was pink and vivid. Brief images of blood flowing from it returned to him and he shuddered. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “There is nothing to be sorry for anymore. You’ve done enough penance. It’s time to live in the present.” MacGyver nodded, knowing she was right. He couldn’t spend the rest of his life suffering. If he did, he would miss all the joy of knowing her. Her life had been spared, and he couldn’t take it for granted. “I love you,” he said, wrapping his arms around her. He kissed the scar, and then he kissed her.
*** After they had showered and dressed, MacGyver and Vanessa stood out on the back porch of his houseboat, watching the ocean. A similar sunrise to the one they admired the morning they had their breakfast date spread over the water, casting everything in a magical, dream-like orange glow. Thin outlines of seagulls flew in the distance, crying. MacGyver closed his eyes and felt the cool, salty morning air caress his face. Vanessa put her hand over his and he opened his eyes again, smiling down at her, unused to company but glad to have her with him, easing the pain of so many months of self-imposed seclusion. “I wished I still lived here,” she said, stroking his arm. “I miss being near you.” She leaned against him. “I miss you too,” he said, touching her long, soft brown hair. “I guess Pete thought it would be better if you weren’t in the same area as before, just in case.” “I know, but I’m with you now. I could be in danger anytime I’m with you.” MacGyver stared off into the distance. Vanessa felt the gravity of his silence as his body stiffened. She looked up at him, his expression stony. “I don’t know if we’ll ever find complete happiness,” he said, his hands tightly gripping the railing. “It seems that’s the nature of my job…and my life.” He looked at her with a sorrowful expression. “Everyone around me runs the risk of getting hurt.” “It’s a risk I’m willing to take. Look MacGyver, you can’t spend your life in fear of hurting someone. People get hurt. It’s the nature of life, as sad and difficult to face as it is. Even if something were to happen to me, I know I would never regret spending one moment with you. Would you?” “No,” he said. “No, I guess you’re right. We can’t live our lives in fear.” He grinned slightly. “It’s not our style.” Vanessa smiled, thinking back to how they met—escaping from a Russian prison. “No, it’s not,” she said. The glorious sunrise was fading, replaced by a bright, warm, and cloudless day. “We never did get to go sailing,” MacGyver said. “Let’s go now.” “It’s a beautiful day for it.” They turned to face each other, smiling. MacGyver held her, pushing free, wild strands of her hair away from her face. She looked at him, her green eyes hard and determined, revealing her strength, but he could also see trust in them—trust for him. After all that Fyodor had tried to sabotage with them, nothing had changed. She still loved him and was still willing to sacrifice anything for him. He had known many women, but never any as loyal. He began to wonder if it was possible for him to stay with her the rest of his life, finally settling down and easing his fear of commitment. He kissed her. “I’ll get the boat ready,” he said, clutching her hands before releasing them and returning inside the houseboat. Vanessa followed him, and they emerged on the other side, near the docks, hopeful for the future.
