Over on one of the other websites that I frequent, one of the mods posts Poetry Exercises for fun. The last one she posted was called the 'Ballade'. The Ballade has a distinct patter of rhymes and lines. I gave it a go this morning, using one of my favourite Muses...
Then I decided to inflict it upon you all!
Read at your own risk!
Enjoy!A Ballade for MacGyver Fingers of thrills are playing down my spine
Moments remaining; the circumstance dire
Close-up on the eyes, see them spark and shine
Of these moments in time, I never tire!
He’s a lot of things, but never a liar
MacGyver; mechanic, hero, and clown
The man of the hour, the one that I’d hire
And my heart near stops as the clock ticks down…
Most guys have one life, MacGyver’s got nine
He battles the bad guy, puts out the fire
Leaps out of airplanes and climbs up a pine
Can cook Tofu soufflé and change a tire
Once pulled little Willis out of a mire
Finds uses for all the things that are found
Once fixed a motor with just nails and wire
And my heart near stops as the clock ticks down…
‘Tween Good and Evil, he won’t cross that line
(Though he’s come pretty close, in bitterest ire)
Not one to complain, criticize or whine
Once even rescued Merlin from a pyre!
Changed Pete’s mind when he wanted to retire
Always achieving, never seeking renown
Being famous is far from his great desire
And my heart near stops as the clock ticks down…
What I love ‘bout him aint hard to define
Not just his character or eyes so brown
Or how he plays frisbee with an old landmine—
And my heart near stops as the clock ticks down!
Everyone, sometimes, needs a camel.
Old troubleshooters never die...
They just wait til the last moment and then rescue themselves!
