With When The World Changes on a stand still for nearly more than a year now, I began on writing a few other stories as well. I just had a good writing moment this evening and after some consideration I decided to post this first chapter after all. Can't always seem to write 120 pages for each story. Not necessary at all, though I would've like to see it otherwise. But the pain and need and will to write has been so big lately. So I began writing. Right now it's just to get it over with so that I got one story less to worry about. With several stories in the run, it's about time I should get it done.
The story is rated R for violence, language and adult themes.
Genre: action, drama and thriller.
I hope you guys are ready for this, because it's going to be one wild and dark ride. Enjoy!!!

Chapter One
Place of the meeting
Night
June 2005

In the middle of a rainy night a black Jeep drove up a driveway of a remote house somewhere in Los Angeles. The rain clattered on the roof immensely and the windshield wipers were going from right to left and back to wipe off the falling drops. The car had stopped in front of the house and the lights turned off. Still there was no movement in the car. The person in it remained motionless. It was as if he was waiting for something. (the track The House from the 8 MM starts playing) MacGyver was in his Jeep, thinking of the situation. He was studying the house. It was an old house, boarded shut. He was supposed to meet someone there, as a part of his new assignment. Only this time he didn’t know what the assignment would be. The only thing he knows is they wanted him to do it.
MacGyver placed his purple cap on his head and got out of the car. When he got out of the car it was like as if he was standing in the shower. The rain was just pouring on him. Than the white flash of lightning went through the sky followed by a thunder strike. He looked around. Besides the house and his car there was not much to be seen except for the road he just drove off and the open fields around the house. Behind the house and the open fields he saw the silhouettes of a bunch of trees.
MacGyver walked to the front door. When he walked up to the door the light above him went on. There was no bell so he knocked on the door. (The track The Call from 8 MM takes over)
Nothing.
He knocked again, harder and longer this time. Still nothing.
Was he too early or too late? Or was his contact late?
He checked his watch. It was one thirty a.m. That was the agreed time.
MacGyver walked once around the house to check for a way in but everything was boarded up. He came back up at the front door. (The track Dwarfland/Love Theme from Mulholland Drive starts playing)
The situation just became more and more bizarre. He’s been through this so many times before, going to strange meetings. But there was something different about this one. Only the fact that this person wanted to meet him in a boarded up house was creepy.
He looked up at the dark house again thinking of his options.
Option A: knocking again and wait in the car.
Option B: picking the lock.
Or option C: go back into his car and drive back home to go to sleep.
Knowing himself he’s too curious. If it’s worthwhile, he can’t leave. So C is out of the question. A is a possibility but who knows how long he has to wait so he thinks he better goes with B and a bit of A.
First, he knocks again. Again nothing happened so he took out his Swiss Army Knife and started to pick the lock. With a little picking, he got inside the house.
The door creaked open as the lightning flashed and thunder crashed. He looked behind him to be sure nothing was there, then he looked behind the door. When he was certain nothing was behind the door, he slowly entered the dark house.
The house felt old and smelled musty. In front of him there was a stairwell. He was extra careful now and began searching the house, starting in the living room.
He entered the living room in darkness. He was looking for the light switch but there was only light coming from the outside between the cracks in the wood. And it was only little light too. Each time lightning flashed the room lit up enough to see around. The furniture was old, like it was designed from in the 1930’s.
Green seats, brown tables, brown cupboards and a lot of dust. Old paintings on the wall. MacGyver looked around but there was nothing out of the ordinary. Not that he could see right away at least.
Lightning flashed again and in a blink he saw a light switch on the wall where he just came in. He went over to the switch, but of course it didn’t work, just like he figured. His eyes caught the attention of something on the table with the next lightning bolt. He walked over to the salon table and picked up a pack of papers that turned out to be an old newspaper.
‘Date: May 6 1937. The Hindenburg Explodes During Landing!’
There was a picture of the burning airship near it’s landing mast. (The music becomes darker) A sound came from out of the kitchen, like something fell over. MacGyver looked up, startled. Lightning flashed again followed by an immensely thunder crash.
MacGyver placed the newspaper back on the table and walked forward to a door in the far left corner of the salon.
The door was half open. MacGyver pushed it open. Also that door creaked open. Just like the salon the kitchen had a thirties designing.
He looked around in the kitchen, a chair and jars were laying the floor. That must’ve fell over. Then something jumped on the sink and made a meowing sound. MacGyver got spooked again when he saw a black cat walking over the sink and meowed. He got a hold of himself.
The cat came towards him and he petted the cat. The cat rubbed his head against his arm.
‘You alone in here?’ he asked silently.
The cat meowed again.
‘I thought so.’
MacGyver was about to leave the kitchen when the cat suddenly started to screech and raised his back and hairs. It was like something was near that scared the cat.
‘What’s the matter?’ MacGyver asked.
The cat’s screeching got louder, that it almost ached MacGyver’s ears and then he jumped away knocking over plates that were standing on the sink. The plates clattered on the floor, breaking into bits and pieces when the cat took off.
Though MacGyver’s level of fear was rising, he still had to control it.
A thud was heard. It sounded like it came from above. He left the kitchen via another door and ended up in the hallway again. On his left was the door he just came in. He slowly walked up the stairs to the next floor. The hallway was dark and there were three doors. One on his left, another one in front of him and the third one on his right.
He checked the door on his left and went into the room. The room smelled like death. MacGyver covered his nose from the horrible smell. He saw a bed against the wall in front of the door. He passed by the bed and nearly jumped to the ceiling when he saw himself in the mirror as the lightning flashed again. But he didn’t make any sound.
Thunder struck the heavens again loud and hard above the house. There was something in his reflection he did not liked seeing. He waited another second for the next lightning flash. It flashed again and he did got a clear sight of a… woman’s body in the bed. Frightened he turns around and walks up to the bed.
The woman was seen again in the next flashes of lightning. From what MacGyver could tell, in her late seventies, early eighties, long gray hair and she was holding a crucifix.
MacGyver didn’t know what to do now that he found this body. He walked back out of the room. He was going to report this to the authorities.
The door in the middle was the bathroom and the other door was another bedroom. There he found the body of an elderly man. He was also holding a crucifix in his hands. He was examining the body and when he got up again, he looked to the doorway and in a flash, (the music becomes more intense) he saw the dead woman standing there and leaving. MacGyver freaked out again and knocked something of the night table. If he wasn’t the man he was, he would’ve wet his pants long ago. It just wasn’t possible of what he saw. He left the room with the man’s body and went back to the other bedroom.
The woman was still there with the crucifix in her hands as if nothing changed. He must’ve imagined it in his head.
The sound of slamming doors below. MacGyver moved his head to his left and looked down the stairs. Thunder boomed again above the house. The sound of the slamming doors came from inside the house. It wasn’t any of the outer doors.
MacGyver slowly and carefully walked down the stairs. With each step he put, he descended the stairs. His alertness was working on maximum level now. After every step, he focussed his ears on sound or movements.
He placed his feet back on solid ground and looked around. Everything still seemed the same, still he could feel a presence. He was looking at the front door now and the dining room on his right. He was about to go into the dining room when from behind him silently a door opened. It was the door that led to the cellar underneath the staircase.
MacGyver took his first steps toward the dining room when suddenly the cat started screeching again.
The screeching dragged his attention. He went to see and found the cat standing there, again like before with his back and hairs raised, screeching at something or someone. MacGyver’s mouth fell open when saw the open door. The door wasn’t open before. He swallowed something back in his throat and stepped towards the door. The cat took off again and MacGyver looked in the open door. He saw only darkness. He went through the door and began looking for a light switch. He found one, but of course it didn’t work either. It was pitch black where he was now. With the flashes of lighting he saw another staircase descending into the cellar. There was no way he would descend in there without lights on. The staircase could be broken, he might fall and break his legs or his back but the curiosity was itching everywhere on his body. He searched his pockets for his Swiss Army Knife.
It was a new design with a flashlight. He pushed a button on the SAK and the light went on. It wasn’t much light but the light was strong enough to lit up the place a little bit.
‘Is anyone down there?’ he asked with trembling voice barely hear-able.
He shone down the stairs. The stairs looked okay. Each stair creaked under his feet. During his descending MacGyver was afraid that every next step might cause the stairs to fall apart. He made it down the stairs. In front of him was a wall so he took a left turn. More and more he disappeared into the dark room. He shone everywhere over the floor to make sure nothing was in his way. He also shone over the walls. There were just cupboards and old materials. He continued down the room and noticed on the farthest wall a closed door. The locking chain was dangling besides it. Someone entered this room, maybe not even a minute ago. MacGyver studied the door. It was just like any of the other doors he saw in the house only this one had a locking chain. His hand was going to the door handle and terrified he opened the door. Sweat was breaking him out. His palm was sweaty and so was his forehead. He opened the door when he switched his laser light over to his other hand and shone into yet another dark area. He entered the area and took the light back to his right hand. He scanned down the place with his laser and noticed how deeper he went into the room, the bloodier things got. The white tiled walls were covered with blood. Chains were attached to the walls. This place looked like a torture room of some sort. The next moment, the door slammed shut. Somebody was locking him up there.
‘Hey!’ (The music becomes very intense now)
MacGyver ran back to the door and tried to open it. It was locked. Angry he turned around and leaned against the door.
He was in trouble now. Locked up in a cellar with no light and no windows at all. How would he escape from there?
The person from behind the door pushed a button on a remote control. Something inside bleeped on. MacGyver heard the bleeping and knew there was a bomb in there. He let out a sigh and leaned his head backwards in his neck backwards in the door. He thought for a moment and than rushed to the bomb. (The music changes into were MacGyver disarms the 2nd bomb in The Prometheus Syndrome) There was nothing new about the bomb, he hadn’t seen before. There was a counter display, coloured wires, igniters. With the flashlight of his Swiss Army Knife he tried to study the bomb. The bomb was underneath a glass screwed lid. So he had to take to lid off to mess with the bomb. With the Philips screwdriver of his SAK he began the unscrew the bomb one by one. He unscrewed four screws before he could take the lid off. He had only 1 minute and 50 seconds left. Now he had to take out he igniters. The Philips screwdriver went back in his SAK and took out the knife. Carefully he tried to recognise the colour wires. There was red, black, green, yellow and blue.
Peoples always say you have to cut the red wire. The colours of the wiring are usually always the same but leads each time to something else. So if this time the red wire is the one to cut? While he was thinking to seconds kept ticking away. 1:25, 1:24, 1:23. He pulled his knife back and took out the scissors and began cutting a wire. He cut the red wire. For a moment the counter remained still on 1:15. The danger seemed passed. (The music relaxes but than continues)
Something clicked and the bomb continued ticking only faster. After ten real time seconds twenty passed on the bomb. He had only fifty-five seconds left to think.
MacGyver started to sweat. The red and blue wires were the most debatable options.
Thirty-five seconds left.
He’s other guess was the blue wire. A little shaky the scissors went to the blue wire. MacGyver pinched his eyes closed and cut. The bomb went off and was disarmed. He took a breather but he wasn’t out of there yet. He ran to the door and examined the lock. Seemed like an ordinary lock. Maybe with the C-4 of the bomb, he can blow the door open. MacGyver started to take out the parts of the bomb until he had the C-4. He took the C-4 and taped it at the door. He attached a fuse to the C-4 and lit it. He took cover behind the table where the bomb was on and waiting for the explosion.
BANG!!!
The door was open in away but the chain on the other side was still on it. (The music speeds up) MacGyver angrily kicked the door open and got out of the house as fast as he could. The storm was still raging over the area when MacGyver went back in his car. He started his car and his front lights went on. In a flash he saw a shadow jumping in the bushes next to the house. Did he see that for real or was it just imagination like with the dead woman?
He sighed and got out. He ran up to the bushes where he saw the shadow disappearing. Nothing. He searched through the other bushes but still nothing. And to be fully convinced there really was nothing he ran around the house one more time. He only noticed a field and a forest in the back but further there was nothing at all.
He didn’t like the place and didn’t like the situation at all. All he wanted now was to get out of there, so he went back to his jeep and drove off.
(The music reaches it's peak as we fade out here)

You need to make it more clear that it was the dead woman he just saw in the other room that he’s seeing in the doorway. wink.gif

I'd sorta got this idea from The Abyss where in Ed Harris had to cut through the wires of a nuclear bomb on the bottom of the sea. He had a yellow light and three wires. A green or black one, and a yellow and white one. You try to figure out which one is white and which one is yellow with a yellow light. Of course he cut the right one, just like Mac did.

And this... I'm not sure what to say. As long as there's precedence for something not making any sence, it's okay? rolleyes.gif

I think maybe you should have him have a mag-light or some other kind of flash light with him upon entering a darkened house, because thinking about it more, not only is the red laser light on colored wires problematic, how is he shining his SAK at something and using the tools of the SAK at the same time?

I know that would decrease the drama of the lightning flashes and all... but maybe it can be low on batteries.

I would do it like this shine on the wire, hold the wire with fingers, use knife and cut. I'd probably get blown up but I thought it would be cooler to use the laser. It was on one of those advertisements here on the pages of SAK I saw there was one designed with a laser. I thought it would be neat for the story.

You know the more I'm busy with it, the more I'm convinced a rewrite is coming, but I'll just finish my first draught and eventually after maybe writing another, rewrite this one.

For what it's worth . . .

Under a red light, green and black cannot be distinguished from each other. Red and white look alike; red and yellow look very similar. Blue looks grey. So Mac is looking at five wires and can't tell what colour any of them actually is.

This is all very easy to check, BTW; all you need is a red light.

In the Victorinox knives with flashlights, the light comes in either red or white. The light is not a laser -- it's an LED. My own SAK has one (white, as it happens).

Change the colour of the LED, and you solve this particular problem. You also make it possible for Mac to see the red blood on the white walls -- he can't see it if the only light he has is red.
