Well, welcome to chapter four. This chapter involves some references to the series. We're now one month later after Pete's death and we're going to learn on how MacGyver has dealt with that. This chapter is rated R for language and a brief moment of... that's the surprise.
(We fade in with an nightly exterior shot of the houseboat while the track Dwarfland/Love theme starts playing of Mulholland Drive) Chapter Four Talk about the Future Looking for Murdoc One month later Night
It was July now. Exactly one month after Pete’s death. Since his funeral, MacGyver backed away from civilization. He hasn’t left the houseboat since he came back from the funeral. He boarded up every window of it. Not talking to anyone anymore. He neglects his phone calls and totally became asocial. The marina was his hideout. He’s been left alone for quiet some time. Thirty days to be exact. While life carries on in the outside world, MacGyver’s timeline got stuck around last month. He could only think about Pete. On how they met each other while chasing down Murdoc, joining in on the DXS and the Phoenix Foundation. All the assignments they did together. All the adventures they’ve been through. Rescuing Pete’s family in Louisiana, taking on Murdoc again after seven years, getting Pete out of retirement, rescuing Pete out of Central America. Going through MacGyverland with Pete, preventing that Pete would get fried by Murdoc, solving the butterfly assignment in which Michael was involved. Trying to get a cease fire between two nations in Switzerland, realizing how solid there friendship is after a fight. Realizing how close they are when MacGyver fought for his life in the hospital and when Pete needed MacGyver’s help the most while going blind. Leaving and returning to the Phoenix Foundation. They shared an adventurous life together. A life now gone thanks to Murdoc. MacGyver had to hand it to Murdoc. Despite he failed time and time again to kill him, he succeeded in destroying his life by killing Pete. His best friend is dead and he himself went half blind in the fight that followed. That’s why MacGyver is now wearing a black eye patch over his right eye. He was touching it as he simply sat there on his couch. It was what he was doing most of the time now. Sitting on his couch in nearly fully darkness, with the exception of a little bit blue light. He couldn’t stand the light of day anymore and took a few walks every now and than in the darkest hours of the night. His hair got longer and he hadn’t shaved himself over the past few days. Somebody knocked on the door, but MacGyver didn’t move. The person knocked again. MacGyver ignored it as long as he could but the knocking kept going. He looked at his watch and counted the last ten seconds till it was two at night. Again someone knocked on the door. (The music fades away here) ‘MacGyver? Are you in there? Open up. It’s Nikki,’ she said muffled from behind the boards. ‘What do you want?’ ‘I wanna talk to you. Let me in.’ ‘What for? Can’t you just leave me alone?’ ‘I’m not leaving before I spoke to you.’ ‘Nikki, go away. Go home!’ ‘Not before I talked to you.’ ‘There’s nothing to talk about.’ ‘Yes, there is. Let me in, now!’ MacGyver sighed and let Nikki in. ‘Tell me what you have to say and get out of here.’ Nikki was slightly shocked on his use of tone but somewhere she understood him. ‘Don’t talk to me like that. It’s me, remember?’ ‘What do you want?’ She looked around at the mess there was in the houseboat. ‘God, how can you live like this, in this filth?’ ‘You came all the way down here to give a critique?’ ‘No. I came all the way down here to ask you to come back to us.’ ‘No thanks.’ ‘MacGyver, we need you. The Foundation needs you.’ ‘They can go on without me.’ ‘No, they can’t. Neither can I.’ ‘If there’s one person in the whole world, that can go on without me, it’s you,’ he said without any subtlety and walked back to his couch. Nikki was now totally shocked. ‘You, b*stard. I’m here, because I care about you, you jerk.’ ‘Nikki, I’ve got a slight idea we had this conversation once before, when Mike died.’ ‘And didn’t I came along to get you out of your self pity?’ ‘Well, I never asked you to.’ Nikki shook her head on MacGyver’s behavior. ‘True, but sometimes friends do things for each other, for no reason. Just out of friendship.’ ‘You could’ve saved yourself a lot of trouble by staying away. Friends of mine end up getting hurt or killed. Mike, Paul Moran, Pete and so many more.’ ‘I understand Pete was your best friend. But he’s dead, you gotta face that.’ ‘I’m facing that.’ ‘Listen to me,’ she hissed. ‘You did everything you could that night. Besides getting him out of there, there was not much you could do.’ ‘Nikki, you don’t understand what happened that night.’ ‘Than please, explain me. I can help you out.’ MacGyver looked at Nikki and offered her to sit down next to him. ‘Pete and I had a fight that night over that meeting I was supposed to attend. I was shocked that at first he didn’t want to help me out. In the end we decided to do it in the morning. Murdoc had him under pressure and I didn’t know that.’ ‘You never know when Murdoc might show up.’ ‘That’s right.’ ‘But MacGyver it’s not your fault Pete died. You did as you always do. Doing whatever you can to help.’ ‘I know but the worst thing is that our last conversation we ever had was a fight and I even couldn’t apologize for it.’ ‘Hey, it’s in the past now. You can’t turn back the clocks. And I know that whatever was said in your fight, if there anything bad was said, it wasn’t meant.’ ‘I just wanna know how long Murdoc had Pete under pressure.’ ‘I guess we’ll never know.’ There was a moment of silence. MacGyver felt somewhat better talking to Nikki. ‘Look, Nikki, I apologize for what I just said to you about going on without me. I didn’t mean it. I just said it without thinking, I…,’ ‘That’s okay,’ she said smiling. For the first time in over a month, MacGyver smiled back to her. ‘It feels good to see someone smile again,’ he said. ‘It feels good to see you smile again as well,’ she replied. ‘So how’s the eye?’ ‘Dead,’ MacGyver said. ‘We were too late that night, they tried to surge it. I guess I’m half blind now for the rest of my life.’ ‘Can I see it?’ ‘It’s better you don’t.’ MacGyver said turning his head away. ‘I can handle it, MacGyver.’ ‘Nikki!’ ‘Please? Just for moment?’ She sat closer to him and removed the eye patch. MacGyver’s right eye was now gray, not entirely but still gray and dead. ‘Thanks,’ she said. ‘Why did you wanna see it?’ ‘MacGyver, this is not the best time to say it but remember when you said that if you didn’t try to keep Jack’s taxi business up and running you’d never met Pete or Murdoc?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘And I replied with that I wouldn’t have met you either than.’ ‘I saw it in your eyes than.’ ‘I don’t know how to say this, but after all we’ve been through, I uh…, I kinda fell in love with you.’ ‘You did?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘What makes you think I am? We never agree on anything.’ ‘That’s true but I saw it in your eyes too.’ ‘You didn’t see it good enough. Buy yourself some glasses,’ MacGyver said again unsubtle but no matter how hard he tried he couldn’t hide it that he did love Nikki Carpenter. ‘We have our mutual respect despite our bickering on lots of things, but I think if we give it a decent chance and we really try, it can work out.’ ‘Nikki, I think Starkoss was right, I do love you.’ ‘So do I.’ Their heads came closer and a kiss followed. After a couple of seconds of kissing their heads separated. ‘Well, I’ll say,’ MacGyver said. ‘Yeah, ditto,’ she said while taking off her coat. (Mulholland's Drive Love Theme starts playing here) A moment nothing happened and than their lips reconnected, more intense as well. MacGyver pushed Nikki backwards on the couch while he kept kissing her. She wrapped her arms around his neck, when he started to kiss hers. He unbuttoned her blouse and she took off his T-shirt. Slowly he pulled off her blouse revealing a black bra. They looked at each other when MacGyver’s hand went to her bra band on her shoulder. She was more than willing to allow him to take it off. As he takes it off their lips meet again.
Ten, fifteen minutes passed when MacGyver and Nikki are lying next to each other on the couch underneath Nikki’s coat. ‘That was great,’ she said. (The music slowly fades away here) ‘Yeah, it was,’ he said. MacGyver kept his arm around Nikki. He felt her soft hand caressing it. ‘So what happens next?’ she asked softly. ‘I don’t know. I can’t say.’ ‘Just say what’s on your mind.’ ‘There’s nothing on it.’ ‘You sure?’ ‘Well… one thing has been on my mind lately.’ ‘What is it, then?’ ‘I’ve had it, Nikki. I wanna resign.’ She looked up to him. ‘You don’t need to.’ ‘No, but I want to. It’s never gonna be the same again without Pete.’ ‘You said the same thing when Matt Webber forced him on retirement.’ ‘But you stayed that time.’ ‘Because Pete left the Foundation for the wrong reasons. Who knows what would’ve become of the Foundation if I didn’t investigate that matter.’ ‘MacGyver, than what are you going to do?’ ‘Start all over again, somewhere else.’ ‘All over? Else where?’ ‘Look, I know I can’t get over Pete’s death ever, but in a different environment and hopefully with you, I think I can at least learn to accept he’s gone.’ ‘Than where do you wanna go?’ MacGyver sighed before he answered. ‘I wanna go back to Minnesota and live in Harry’s cabin away from everything and everybody. You know I like solitude.’ ‘I know and I respect your idea but your duties are here. Your friends live here. If you really don’t wanna work for the Foundation maybe you can start working in the Challengers Club. Just talk to Cynthia or something.’ ‘Maybe.’ ‘On the other hand, I think to keep Pete’s remembrance in honor is to stay with the Foundation. If he ever needed a follow-up, he would’ve appointed you.’ ‘Or you.’ ‘And you wouldn’t have problems to work for me?’ ‘Back in the old days, maybe. Now, not at all.’ ‘Well, there’s still no replacement for Pete. Everybody is hoping you would take over the reigns of the Foundation.’ ‘We’ll see, Nikki,’ he said and kissed her head. ‘Also to honor Pete’s memory is to go after Murdoc.’ ‘Murdoc? MacGyver said. ‘But Murdoc is dead. They had the body this time.’ ‘That, they had but something tells me Murdoc is not dead.’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘This is also why I came to you in the first place.’ ‘What?’ ‘Michael disappeared about three to four weeks ago. It was the evening of the funeral when he disappeared.’ ‘Oh, my God.’ ‘We’ve send out our best agents to find him and the LAPD is also investigating it but it’s like he vanished into thin air.’ ‘And now you think Murdoc has him because he interfered in our fight?’ ‘I know, it sounds crazy but that’s what I think.’ ‘Believe me, Nikki, that doesn’t sound crazy at all. If Murdoc is still alive, he probably had a bulletproof vest on. But bulletproof vest or not, the amount of bullets he took, must’ve wounded him deadly.’ ‘Well, Murdoc’s not normal.’ ‘That he isn’t.’ ‘You were the last one who dealt with Murdoc, maybe you know where he’s hiding. If we find Murdoc, we find Michael.’ ‘So you actually came to me to ask me if I wanna go look for Michael.’ ‘Yes. But it can wait till morning.’ MacGyver felt suddenly energetic and got up. ‘Get up,’ he said. ‘What? Why?’ ‘I’ll go look for him now.’ ‘What? MacGyver, it’s 2.20 AM.’ ‘I know. I wanna be back before daylight. Come on, get dressed.’ ‘OK, than.’ ‘I’m going to freshen up,’ he said and walked up the spiral staircase. Halfway he stopped and looked to see Nikki putting her bra back on. She stood with her back to him and while she was hooking it up she turned around and caught him in the act. ‘What are you looking at?’ she asked. ‘Well, uh…,’ MacGyver stuttered. ‘You like what you see?’ she asked as she straightened her back. ‘Uh… I’ll be right back.’ MacGyver went upstairs to get freshened up while Nikki put her boots back on. ‘Nikki, you’ve got him, missy,’ she smiled.
MacGyver and Nikki sat in the Jeep driving back to that house looking for Michael. ‘This is the place of the meeting I went to the night Pete died,’ MacGyver said. ‘Yeah, I know, the police told me. They’ve cleared out that house,’ Nikki replied. ‘Is this where you found Pete?’ ‘No, I found him the caves in the forest up ahead.’ MacGyver drove back to the caves. He stopped in front of the caves and they both got out. ‘This is where I found him,’ he said pointing to the entrance of the caves. ‘OK,’ she said and out of her handbag she took a six shooter revolver. In the moonlight MacGyver saw the silver shine. ‘What are you doing?’ ‘Protection!’ she said. ‘You know how I feel about those things.’ ‘MacGyver, it’s not because you don’t use them, that I don’t have to either. This thing makes me feel safer. I use it more to keep my enemies on distance, not to kill them.’ ‘Alright, alright!’ The crying sound of a pack of wolves echoed through the forest. It gave them both shivers. ‘Let’s go,’ he said and pressed the button on the flashlight. They walked into the caves. ‘How long is this corridor?’ she asked and stepped closer to him. ‘I don’t know. Quite long. In a minute or so we’ll end up in a three-way. Than we’ll follow the middle one. If nothing has changed over the past month a generator will start up automatically. Than we can see better,’ MacGyver said. ‘At least you will.’ MacGyver and Nikki crossed the generator point and lights lit up again in the dark caves. ‘There we are,’ he said and put his flashlight away. ‘Than I walked further till Pete came from around the corner, bleeding.’ MacGyver remembered the moment, Pete appeared bloodied all too vivid. ‘The son of a b*tch killed him.’ They followed the corridor till it ended up at a closed door. MacGyver and Nikki shared a questioning look. Carefully MacGyver grabbed the doorknob and opened door. His head popped in and looked behind the door for any traps. The smell of the room filled his nostrils. MacGyver exclaimed. ‘Is it safe?’ Nikki asked whispering. ‘It smells in here,’ he replied. ‘Well, it can’t smell worse than your houseboat.’ MacGyver ignored her and walked further in the room. It reminded him of Murdoc’s room beneath the cemetery. (Now tense music comes up) While proceeding down the room, the trap shuts. Murdoc appears from behind them with his gun in his hand aiming at MacGyver and Nikki. He pulled the trigger. The triggering sound made MacGyver and Nikki realize they were caught. They turned around to face Murdoc. ‘Alright, Ms. Carpenter, drop your gun,’ he said. ‘Give me one reason, why,’ she said. From behind the door Murdoc pulled out Michael. ‘That’s why.’ ‘Michael,’ MacGyver said. ‘Michael,’ Nikki said while dropping her gun. ‘So I was right. You had him.’ ‘That’s right, I had him.’ Murdoc brutally pushes Michael forward. Michael fell and impulsively he got up and tried to attack Murdoc but Murdoc shot him. Nikki gasps as Michael took the bullet in his shoulder. Michael went down again. Nikki bend down to take care of him. ‘You, son of a b*tch,’ she cursed him and threw him an angry look. Murdoc took her gun. (The music slowly fades away here) ‘So, what are you going to do now? Shoot us?’ MacGyver asked. Murdoc burst out in laughing. ‘No, MacGyver. I won’t shoot you. It would be too easy.’ ‘Of course it would be. You want me to suffer the way you made Pete suffer. Well, you are doing a good job. By killing Pete, you ruined my life and I’m half blind because of you. I’m sure H.I.T. would be very proud of you now.’ ‘Yes, they would be. You’re the only blemish on my record. The only one I failed to execute was you. But after tonight it’s going to be all over.’ ‘Why don’t you just get this over with, huh?’ Michael asked. ‘You got us, so kill us. Just shoot us.’ ‘Well, if you really want another bullet, I can arrange that,’ Murdoc said triggering his gun. ‘No!’ Nikki said and threw her body over Michael’s. ‘It’s me you want, Murdoc. Shoot me!’ ‘What is this? I ain’t gonna shoot nobody, I’ve got other plans in mind. Just be warned. After I kill you, others will follow.’ ‘Than who?’ Nikki asked. ‘Dalton,’ Murdoc answered, ‘and Mrs. Thornton of course. Those are just two but I will kill all of them.’ ‘You’re going to kill Jack and Connie as well?’ MacGyver asked. ‘Uh-huh!’ ‘If you lay one hand my mother, I swear to God I’ll kill you,’ Michael said threatening. ‘How are you going to kill me, if I killed you already?’ MacGyver gave Michael a look that Murdoc had a point. ‘Touché, Murdoc but dead or alive, I’ll kill you anyway.’ ‘Yeah, yeah. You sure got a big mouth there,’ Murdoc said while taking three chairs. ‘But don’t worry, I’m going to close it real soon. Sit down!’ ‘Murdoc, there’s just one thing that has to get of my chest,’ MacGyver said. ‘Oh, really? What’s that?’ he asked while putting the chair in front of MacGyver. ‘I know, we had our fight before but Pete’s death made something snap.’ ‘What than?’ ‘Your nose,’ he said and with big hard right hand MacGyver really hit the snot out of him. Murdoc staggered backwards as the blood that jumped out of his nose landed on the walls. He collapsed against the wall. A little shaken and surprised of what happened he looked at MacGyver. It was strange that he had the situation under his control and MacGyver still was able to hit him. He kept his hand against his nose. It wasn’t broken but it was bleeding badly. In reaction Murdoc shot back but deliberately missed him. (Now we hear the music where MacGyver tried to shoot Murdoc in Strictly Business) ‘Forget the theatrics, I should kill you, right here, right now,’ he said getting back up. ‘Than go ahead.’ MacGyver spread his arms to provoke Murdoc in doing it. Murdoc aimed his gun. This was his moment. The moment he would finally kill MacGyver. ‘Please go ahead. Shoot me. Come on, do it.’ This seemed more like the reversed confrontation they had in that mine, years ago. ‘Come on, Murdoc, shoot me. Kill me, face to face.’ Michael’s and Nikki’s eyes darted between the two men. ‘You can’t do it, can you?’ Desperation was to be read on Murdoc’s face. ‘So much for the big hitman. Can’t kill his biggest foe while standing in front of him.’ MacGyver shook his head in disgust. ‘How weak is that?’ ‘Shut up!’ Murdoc yelled. ‘You can kill an old blind man but you can’t kill me? That won’t be standing good on your precious record, will it?’ ‘Shut the f*ck up! I’ll swear to f*cking hell, I’ll kill you!!’ ‘Than do it!!’ MacGyver yelled back, throwing the chair away that stood between the two men. ‘Do it!!’ MacGyver walked up to Murdoc till his gun touched his gut. ‘No,’ Murdoc said. ‘Shooting you is not part of the plan. But getting back at you for that blow is part of the plan.’ With the barrel of the gun, he hit MacGyver in the face and than with left fist he rammed it in his gut. MacGyver groaned when he went down. ‘Now, we’re even.’ (The music fades away) MacGyver looked at Murdoc, the blow from the barrel of the gun caused a bleeding. Blood was running down from his left eyebrow corner. ‘We’re only going to get even when you’re dead,’ MacGyver spat back holding his arm against his gut. ‘So, now you’re going to kill me?’ ‘I’ll do everything I can to get you on death row.’ ‘Don’t make me laugh.’ ‘No, Murdoc, don’t you make me laugh. You’re the joke, here.’ To reply on that Murdoc kicked MacGyver as hard as he could in his side. ‘Hey, now that’s enough,’ Nikki said loud. ‘You are right, Ms. Carpenter. I’ve had enough of this as well. It’s time to get this over with.’ Murdoc picked up a weakened MacGyver and tied him down to a chair. Hands and feet as well. The ropes on the feet got tied to another chair that stood in front of him. With the other end of the rope that held their feet together a weapon got attached to it. ‘So, MacGyver, the way I figured out to kill you,’ Murdoc explained, ‘and not only to kill you but also to kill Michael and Ms. Carpenter is a very special one.’ ‘Well, we’re honored,’ MacGyver said. ‘On this chair, I’ve attached the crossbow and tied the rope around the triggering mechanism. Move your feet and the arrow with my own form of cyanide will kill you.’ Michael and Nikki got tied down the same way, only they had other weapons aiming at them. Michael was looking in the barrel of a shotgun and Nikki in the barrel of her own gun. ‘Clever!’ MacGyver said. ‘Thank you!’ Murdoc replied while getting some duct tape. ‘You welcome,’ MacGyver added sarcastically. Murdoc tore of a piece of duct tape while he stood in front Nikki. ‘Anything else to say?’ ‘Go to hell,’ she said while throwing another poisonous look. ‘I’m already there,’ he said and kissed her full on the lips. ‘Hmmm,’ Nikki growled in protest. ‘Get off of her!’ MacGyver yelled. Murdoc got off of her and Nikki turned her head down wretched. When she turned her head back up she spat him in his face. Murdoc wiped off the spit and hit her in the face with the palm of his hand. ‘Hey!’ MacGyver yelled again. Murdoc taped her mouth closed. ‘No more, spittin’ for you.’ He walked up to Michael. ‘Ha, Michael,’ he said tapping his wounded shoulder. ‘So young and about to meet his father on the other side already. Too bad, your father would’ve been proud to see you take his place in the Phoenix Foundation. Than again, some things aren’t meant to be.’ He taped his mouth as well and tapped his shoulder deliberately again. ‘Now, MacGyver, you sure were one formidable opponent. But to all things must come an end on some point.’ ‘Do you really think, I haven’t figured a way out of here, already?’ ‘You always think of something, don’t you? It won’t work this time. The slightest movement and you’re gone. Goodbye, MacGyver,’ he said and also taped his mouth and playfully patted his cheek, ending with a hard pat. (Tense music comes up again) Murdoc put his gun away in his pants and walked towards the door. ‘I hope, I see you all in hell. Goodbye,’ he said and locked the door behind him. (The music reaches it's peak and we fade out here)

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver. Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you. It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.
