Chapter 9: RUN!!!!

MacGyver peered out over a row of wooden crates. Jack mimicked this to his side.

“Alright. What’s the plan?” Jack asked, still surveying.

“We get Bruce out of here and leave in one piece. Sound good to you?” Mac answered, somewhat sarcastically. Jack nodded and scratched his stubbly chin.

They were facing a small helipad. The perimeter was surrounded by a weathered compound. It resembled an old mission. A bell still hung above the tallest tower. Soldiers, of course, were patrolling the entire area. A door inside the building stood near their hiding place. But an armed man toted his rifle in front of it. Mac looked around.

An abandoned car sat in the distance. Mac also noticed some gnarled trees. On the horizon loomed dense jungle. It encircled the entire area. Mac turned back to the run-down vehicle and motioned to Jack to follow him.

The two silently crept through the tall grass. As they found themselves at the site, Mac pulled his SAK out of his jacket pocket. He unfolded the knife tool and approached a wheel. He wedged the blade into the rusted, holey axle. Mac stuck his tongue into his cheek as he pried the corroded metal apart. He heard the wheel give way with a subdued groan. He quickly cut the tire against its treads, turning it into one long strip of rubber. He pulled the hubcap out turned back to the broken axle. He kicked the remaining pole off with his boot and split them again into two pieces. Jack was meanwhile peeking under the hood. He withdrew a black elastic cord, the fan belt. Mac skulked over to a Y-shaped tree and got to work. He stuck one end of the tire to one of the branches and the other end to the opposite branch. He pulled out the rusted pole and jammed the sharp edges into each end of the tire. The metal pierced the rubber and into the bark. Mac threw his weight into them, pounding them well in. He inserted the hubcap into the tire. Jack ran up to him with the belt.

He said quietly “If I know you well enough, this should top the whole invention.” He tied the belt around the tire and stretched it over the hubcap, leaving a ‘tail’ over the cap. Mac looked puzzled.

“Rubbin’ off on you am I?” he said, surprised. Jack grinned and handed the tail over to Mac. He grasped the rubber and pulled it back. The tire stretched back, almost ready to snap. Mac saw the compound and targeted it through the tree. He gave one last yank and released the strap.

The hubcap launched off the tire, soaring like a UFO. It flew clear into the small community, hitting the bell. The deep clang echoed in the silent air. Mac shot his fist into the air in success. Suddenly the sound was replaced by the thousands of clicks of soldiers reloading weapons. Jack stood dumbfounded with his inventive addition. Mac started to sprint to the near wall, Jack still behind. He turned and clasped Jack’s brown bomber jacket. He tugged him into reality and the two dashed to the compound as the soldiers searched elsewhere.

But neither of them truly knew the extent of the scheme at hand…
