Chapter 11: Quick-Witted, But Distracted
Without warning, Mac burst through the door. The nearest soldier turned to face him. Mac close-lined him and continued on his path. Other soldiers heard this interruption. Mac sprinted as fast as he possibly could, aiming for the general.
Jack was still peering outside. He gasped as the guards raised their guns in unison.
Mac almost fell to the ground when he heard the resounding cracks of gunfire. The bullets scared up small clouds of dust around Mac’s feet. They followed his trail. Mac leapt into the air, avoiding the barrage of hot lead.
He finally reached the medal-clad general. He grabbed his collar and yanked him close to his jacket. The hidden pocket knife jabbed his spine. The man raised his hands in surrender. The soldiers hesitated. “Do not fire! You may hit me!” said the man in a thick Spanish accent.
Mac shook his hostage a bit to emphasize the drama. Slowly, Mac backed up toward the near wall of trees. Beyond it thrived the overgrown jungle, his ultimate destination. The soldiers stayed put. The man seemed to have no questions for MacGyver.
Finally, Mac looked back at the lush hideout. He turned to the soldiers once more. Mac shoved the man to the dusty ground. He collapsed. The soldiers looked shocked.
“CATCH ME IF YOU CAN!!!!” Mac challenged.
With that, he hurriedly darted into the foliage. More bullets whizzed by, leaving holes in the trees. Mac hopped over thick mangrove roots and dodged low hanging vines as he valiantly tried to escape his fate as human Swiss cheese.
Light pierced through the emerald canopy above. He looked back, somewhat worried. The olive fatigues of soldiers nearly blended into the forest. They didn’t even watch their feet, just continued firing. Orange explosions erupted from the black rifles. Mac spun his head back around.
The trailing buzz of a bullet approached. It ended with a thud. Mac felt a shooting pain explode in his left arm. He looked down to see crimson streams leak from a rip in his jacket. He set his hand on the wound, trying to slow the bleeding.
In the distance, the sky shown. Mac didn’t have time to think as he accidentally dashed head-long off a cliff…
