The street outside was calm. A few bland sedans ambled by. The parking garage sat on one side, solitarily so. A rising hum started to come from within the compound.
Instantly, an olive jeep flew across traffic, launched off the exit incline. Mac wrenched the wheel, the tires turning in the air. The front end tilted forward, the gravel visible below. Mac squeezed his eyes shut as bumper slammed into the road. A shower of sparks leapt up into the windshield, the bright particles bouncing off. The back end fell hard.
Mac bounced in the air from the shock. The vehicle jostled around, attempting to achieve a balance. Finally, Mac regained control and spun into traffic.
A cacophony of horns sliced the air as the jeep swerved through on-coming traffic. Mac twisted the wheel and headed over to the right lane.
His mind raced, trying to remember the fastest way to get to the train station. Ahead, the street split into a T. A boarded passage sat in between two buildings.
Mac shrugged and shoved the gas pedal to the floor with a thud. He ducked under the dashboard as the impact neared. A loud crack signified his entrance as splinters rained down on him, with planks flying overhead. Mac raised his head, seeing a long alleyway.
A road appeared in the distance. Mac cautiously steered the vehicle between the brick walls. The street approached and Mac noticed a fenced off area. Vines covered the metal fence and a black line ran along the horizon.
Suddenly, a locomotive burst into view, chugging at seemingly impossible speeds.
The jeep shot across the pavement and headed for the fence. Mac turned the wheel in the direction the train was speeding. The chain-link fence sprang apart with a metallic twang as he drifted through it.
The vehicle fish-tailed as he struggled to regain control. He floored the pedal again. The traveling train seemed to slow down as the jeep matched its speed.
Mac noticed metal rungs on the outside of one compartment. He unbuckled his seatbelt and stood up, foot still on the gas. Mac set his other foot on the top of the door. With one last press to the pedal, he dove onto the compartment.
His hands wrapped around a metal pole, his body swinging with it. His lower half slammed into the compartment with an unhealthy clank.
The pain forced one of his hands to slip, flailing wildly. He looked down the track. A tunnel loomed ahead. There wasn’t enough side clearance for his body.
Mac felt his fingers slipping. But in a sudden explosion of adrenaline, Mac reached up with his other hand and ascended the ladder, faster than he thought possible.
He rolled onto the roof, still eyeing the tunnel suspiciously. The top was too low, also. A few yards ahead, a gap in compartments provided safety.
Mac dashed ahead, his goal to dive into this hole. He got closer. The tunnel zoomed forward. The gap was within feet. MacGyver gave one last desperate look at the deadly tunnel and flung his battered body into the hole. As he was falling through the air, the black shadow of the cave shrouded him. He collapsed on the small walkway. He sighed heavily.
That’s the last time I’m late! He thought.
