Mac warily got to his feet amid the rattling train. He looked back and forth, a door on each car. Picking one, he made his way toward the engine.
The door slid open with a scratching sound, still engulfed in darkness. He stepped inside, knowing he was going to regret it.
As he pulled his leg inside, the panel slid back, sealing him in.
Mac saw the new subterranean lamps along the tunnel walls. At each interval, a flash of light would slip through the slats of the car. One of these quick happenings illuminated a silhouette at the opposite end. Each time this happened, his lifeless eyes would appear in the light. They were unmistakable. Mac shuddered, but approached. He apprehensively opened his mouth to speak. “Alright. You nearly made my son deaf! You blew up my grandpa’s gift! What do you want from me?!?!” “I want you to join me. I see the way your mind works. It quite well mimics my own. But first, I want you to be torn apart by the horrible side effects of being “good.” Have you noticed the pattern, yet?” “Pattern? What pattern?” “There is a method to my madness, Mr. MacGyver. Of this I can assure you. But it is not my place to use your mind. However, the play isn’t over, the first act is just ending.” He answered, his eyes dully transfixed.
The lights passed and the train was filled, once again, with inky blackness. Another lamp ran by, revealing the situation.
The far door was half open, Zito nowhere to be found.
Mac jerked his head in frustration and took off, sprinting. He vigorously dashed through the various railcars, each like the next.
The lights continued, only allowing sight at certain moments.
Finally, Mac burst through a door and into the cramped engine room. No one was inside, just another note. Mac snatched it up and read it: “Sorry about the quick exit, but I just had to run. I thought you could handle the controls. Just be sure to stop it before the train reaches the depot. “ Mac looked back up at the controls. A washing-machine sized box sat in front of him. He scratched his chin and tried to think of any train knowledge.
[I]I know it’s electric, but how do I slow it? He thought in desperation.
Mac reached for his SAK, only to realize that Zito stole it. He reached for his back pocket.
He pulled out a quarter and flipped it around his fingers. He placed it into the grooves on the screws, quickly loosening all of them.
He slid his fingers into the small ridge beneath and pulled off the lid.
Various machinations and gears were working to achieve some sort of goal. He followed the inner workings to some sort of a lever on the side.
A gauge rested behind it. It was a normal speedometer.
He instinctively pulled it to “0.” Nothing changed. He repeated this feat a few times in disbelief. He looked up out the windows. A train-filled lot slumbered on the horizon.
He couldn’t tell how many trains were there, but he knew he’d hit something. He turned and ran back, a half-baked plan simmering…
