Chapter 14: Not Again! Black orbs plagued Mac’s vision. A bright flash would appear every so often. Each flash brought back more vision. The orbs disappeared, his eyes still glazed over. He pinched his eyelids shut and shook off the odd feeling.
Everything seemed to reappear.
He was in a tiny room. A hanging lamp idly swung in the air. He was slumped on a well-worn maple chair. He reached his fingers up to his head, his muscles creaking each step of the way.
He massaged his scalp, searching for the tell-tale bump. His index finger hit a lump. A coursing, intense flood of pain filled his head. He flinched, his teeth bared.
That soldier must’ve knocked me out! But where am I now? He stood up, his legs wobbling ominously. He approached the lone door, expecting the obvious.
It clicked, still locked. Figures he thought, being in a similar situation before. In the distance he heard a muffled beating of helicopter blades.
He looked, seemingly through the wall, feeling Jack returning. Mac realized the urgency and backed up. He stood away from the door, standing in a sprinting stance.
He shoved off, shoulder bared in front. He slammed full-force into the flimsy door, splintering it into several jagged pieces. Mac ran straight into the stucco wall, also putting a sizeable dent in the structure.
He shouted in agony, his shoulder now screaming in pain. He backed up, shrugging off the anguish, and headed up the nearby stairs.
He ascended them in record time, appearing on the rooftop. The bell tower rose up ahead.
The scorching Amazon sun beating on him, he surveyed the horizon. In the distance, a black object soared closer. It got larger until he could identify it as Jack’s chopper.
He turned and ran to tower. A small rectangular opening served as a door. He ducked inside and found a series of wooden poles that served as stairs. He leaned on the wall, stepping up to the bell.
Mac carefully moved out to the central signal. Extra rope ran from it to the floor. He leaned out and clasped the braided fibers in his hand.
Turning to the opening, he leapt outside, still holding the rope. Now, the opening that the bell was visible through, also had a rope leading out of it.
Mac tossed the end of the rope between his hands. He looked back at the roof. Not much was there. But a cable antenna was on the corner.
Before Mac even had a moment to contemplate the reason for cable in the middle of a rain forest, he ripped it from the roof. He tied the rope around one end of the device. He tugged at it for extra reinforcement. He nodded satisfactorily.
The chopper was now hovering over the helipad, the soldiers exclaiming below. Mac ran to the edge, dragging the antenna. He pulled up the metal skeleton and started spinning it.
He let it slip from his hands, his escape straight ahead. The antenna hooked the metal landing poles. The rope pulled taut, providing a line over the ground to the chopper.
Mac ran forward and dove onto the line, wrapping his arms around it. He swung around it, his legs flying around.
“GO!!!!!!!!!!!!” He yelled above the whirring. Jack followed suit, pulling away to the airport.
The rope was even tighter, cracking sounding behind. Suddenly, as the soldiers were ready to fire, Jack pulled off, the bell crashing through the tower.
Debris showered the soldiers, all running for cover. Mac held on tighter as he swung down near the ground. The bell dragged a bit, then fell off. The chopper suddenly shot up into the sky, Mac swaying wildly.
The copter leveled out, headed for the plane. Mac hugged the rope close, looking at the lush jungle below. How long can I keep this up? He wondered, quite alarmed.
