I don't know if I missed this, but how did the producers have access to all these SAKs? Were they provided based on the needs of the episode or just on what was on hand?

RDA once said in an interview that they were sent a whole bunch of SAK's for the show. So I guess they just used whichever one the props person hand landed on unless they needed a specific tool.

Yes they do look like 2 different knives to me. I'm certainly no knife expert though. Unfortunately the real knife enthusiasts who made the original list don't come here any more.

I have to say, while it might not be perfect, I'm thrilled to have that list and use it more times than I can say when I'm watching the old series. Considering it's taken from stills, it's right near phenomenal! thumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif

Have just gone through the thread and checked the list so far. Seems to be updated according to the latest comments however I must point out something.

Where in the list there is a "/" like for example, Executive / Tinker, according to the members' posters posts and comments it means AND not OR. Therefore in Executive / Tinker means Executive AND Tinker.

In fact in the Survivors episode there is an OR specified when there is uncertainty:

QUOTE
Super Tinker or Tinker / Unidentified

The above means that 2 knives were used: 1 is either a Super Tinker or Tinker and 2 is still Unidentified.

Therefore, the total number of knives used can be used by counting (with care) the number of times a knife is mentioned.

This brings me back to the original list I posted.

In the meantime, I also sent a private message to Makoto which looks as a good episode knife expert here, hoping he could come back to give us a helping hand.

I will also try and tackle the unidentified episodes and post any hints and opinions here. Maybe we can identify some more as well with your help.

Cheers

I just came across an interview with Pat O'Brien. Take a look below at his answer:

QUOTE
How many Swiss Army Knives did you have on hand?  Anything else interesting about the procurement or use of the knives?

POB: We kept a dozen or so with us at all times, and there was the odd occasion where we would need a specific one so we would buy several for that scene. The company gave us permission to use the knives but we had to buy them.

Just one question...

In the FAQ section, there is written that his most used knife is a "Tinker model" from Victorinox.

Are we referring to all Tinker based models? i.e. Tinker, Tinker small and Super Tinker?

Because, in the SAK per episode page, Tinker is mentioned 23 times. However there are 2 episodes where there is an OR, so we have to deduct 2, which brings us to 21 times.

21 times including all models (Tinker, Tinker small and Super Tinker).

However, if we are considering the Tinker only (excluding the small and the super), we only have 11 times where it is used (excluding the ones with an OR as well)

And then we have the Standard which was used 15 times.

Obviously I am excluded the unidentified ones.

I am asking since I found a lot of sites quoting the FAQ page with a link to the SAK usage page and mentioning that most used knife was the Tinker.

Can someone kindly clear this please? I mean on what basis is there written that the Tinker is the most used swiss army knife?

Thanks in advance

I think it's all Tinkers, but the people who originally made that list are no longer here but I think that was the decision. You might find something back int he early posts about it.

If this seems better as a new topic, let me know, and I'd be happy to start one up. This topic, though, really helped me locate a few knives, so I thought it would be appropriate to just reply to the thread.

Disclaimer: I realize the list of SAKs is based on identifying tiny details in NTSC-grade video stills. I'm not overly concerned with perfect accuracy. I'm just hoping to get as close as possible to the props used in the show.

I'm looking for some help identifying the Wenger SAK used in Trumbo's World.

The database indicates it's a Pocketmate. When you click on the link for the Wenger Pocketmate, it shows a picture of a Wenger Viking.

Not that the SAK wiki site is 100% comprehensive, but I can't locate a Pocketmate model: 85mm Wengers

So, I did some digging, and found a reference to a "Pocket Mate."

Here, they describe something that sounds like a Wenger Commander. But, one of the distinguishing characteristics of the knife in the episode is the obvious chain instead of the split ring. So, looking for just a Pocketmate seems to take me farther away from whatever knife appears in the episode. Looking for something like a Viking (like in the picture) seems to get me closer.

Just to throw some more chum in the water, I keep running into a completely different knife also called a PocketMate.

If the Pocketmate is just some super-old model, and the Internet has no memory of it, I can accept that fact. If it really was something closer to a Commander, though, maybe the database could use a more appropriate picture of the knife.

In the end, I don't think you could really tell from the episode since the biggest difference is the clip-point blade vs. the nail file. I'm also guessing Wenger used chains and split rings without 100% consistency throughout the years. Since this is for my personal collection, I'm just buying both knives regardless.

Maybe someone here actually owns a Pocketmate, and can set me straight. In the end, if this discussion just helps a future SAK collector avoid my confusion, I'd also be really happy.

Thanks!

QUOTE (MacDriver @ 9 August 2011 - 07:39 PM)
It's funny, five years ago no one on here really talked about SAKs in this much detail, and now we have expert eyes everywhere. I almost feel obsolete in my contribution to the community now tongue.gif It's fantastic though, I think for me personally it was one of the more enigmatic elements of the show. I always ask the question "why" about things, so once I realized he changed it up constantly I tried to figure out "why is he always changing SAK's?"

Now we know the official back story about victorinox giving them a big "gross" of them every season (no doubt a mix of different models), that explains why to an extent. Still, was it an accident, or did they purposefully have Mac changing it up? I REALLY would like to know what Rick (or the props dept) was thinking all throughout the show in regards to the knives.

I doubt that there was a whole lot of thought given to what knife he carried beyond making sure Mac had the right tool at the right time for the story, but I have my own personal theory that Mac always carried two knives on him. To me that makes the most sense. He could carry one in his hip pocket and one in his front pocket, etc., and always have a backup in case one was lost or stolen, or if he needed a bigger selection of tools. At least that's how I believe a real-life Mac would do it. I know there are a few episodes where it is clear that he only has one on him, but then there are all of those where he's using more than one within the same episode, or even the same scene. Perhaps, due to air travel restrictions (whatever those were back in the late 80's/early 90's, he didn't take any with him (except in his checked baggage) when traveling over seas, and would just pick one up wherever he was going (one of the advantages of SAKs is their international availability), and perhaps explains why his knives were so random (Wengers/Vics of various models could be explained by Mac simply buying whatever happened to be available at the time). Anyway, just the way my brain attempts to avoid seeing things as bloopers, and suspend disbelief.

I think most viewers at the time cared little for what tools were presented on each SAK. They just used whichever at the time that made sense for what was required. The opening title sequence makes the Wenger look good. And upon every situation, most subconsciously accept that he is using the same knife over and over again. Until you take a close look, that is. biggrin.gif

I agree with denizen about that... most viewers at the time (including me) just admired MacGyver (... and still do) but little care was given to the knife. They just knew he always carried a knife and that's it.

Danjo1, your theory about MacGyver carrying more than 1 knife makes sense if we pretend that a whole episode was shot at one go since if that was the case, Mac would have to carry a battery of knives throughout the whole episode mission. In a real life situation, that is what one should do in order to be fully prepared.

However, I am more of the opinion that different knives were given to him between a scene and another depending on the macgyverisms to be performed.

I see you carry a Tinker. Great choice mate. Tinkers rock thumbsup.gif

Hi guys, new member here smile.gif

A Mac fan since the very first Ep back in the 80's, and a huge Sak user and lover macsak.gif

About the Sak's used through out the series, i think a lot of speculation (and a bit of fantasizing...) has been made as to why so many, but the thing is that they just bought a whole box of them to use as props for the show, and apart from the need for a specific tool for a specific scene RDA just grabbed a random one for the shot (or sequence of shot's), there was really not more science behind it than that...
Some times they'd use more than one model on an Ep simply because the shot's where filmed in different days and they just gave him a different one on the next shot...

On Hellfire for example, he is using a Small Tinker and an Executive in the same shot sequence. On the shot of his hand scarping the nitro from the bottom of the box he has the small tinker, on the panoramic front shot (same place) of him and his friend you can clearly see him holding an Executive.
The shot's where filmed on two different days, and the "hand" shot is probably not even RDA himself...

As RDA said in interviews, he probably destroyed over 150 of them through the whole series, either on the shot's or on his spare time as he used to throw them around and stick them in telephone poles, trees, walls and such... roller.gif

That being said, they used a whole lot more 84mm Sak's than it is on the Sak Ep list here on the site. In Killzone for example he didn't use a Super Tinker (as on the list) but a Salesman, which is an 84mm model of the Super Tinker.

On the Eraser he used a Tourist on the bar shot's (fixing the ginger ale dispenser) and on the car shot (rigging up the phone), and a standard Spartan when he was going to pry a glass from a door to enter the abandoned building.

My guess is they used 70% of the times 84mm models up untill the 4th season, and some times the Executive, and started using the 91mm a lot more from then on. Mainly because the production and availability of the 84mm models (with scissor's at least) got a lot more difficult as a lot of 84mm models got discontinued mid 80's.

"Another Day...; a whole n'other set of fresh possibilities..." - MacGyver (S1E19 - "Slow Death")

Are you sure about this VictorinoxGuy? If yes, can you provide screen captures please? So that maybe KiwiTek can update the list showing the knives used in each episode? Since in the list there is currently Super Tinker.

Also...

Looking forward for your reply so that we can have a more updated list happy_dance.gif
