Chapter 16: No Ice, Please
Before Mac even pried open his eyes, a chilling wave swept over him. Mac shook violently; his declining heat was taking effect. He managed to strain his head up a bit. Waves of small specks pelted his tender face, wind wearing it raw. The relentless chill still froze him. His arms shook violently. He tried to get up, losing all stability. His tennis shoes glided sickeningly around the ice shelf. His balance was all but lost. Hindered breaths ejected from his mouth in the form of clouds. He managed to look at the arctic surroundings. A couple corrugated metal shacks were spread out. Despite their ramshackle appearance, they were sturdy enough to not shake in the intense winds. Mac vigorously rubbed his arms, trying to warm himself. The bitter cold sliced through his leather jacket, leaving him close to frozen. He made his mind to enter one of the buildings. Cautiously stomping his way toward the rigid structures, snow crunching beneath every step, he continued. His breath was even shorter and more hurried. He leaned into the similarly metal door and let his weight, his only strength left, open it. The door swung open, causing him to stagger inside. It was a small room, a staircase was the only feature. His veins suddenly warmed, feeling some form of heat from the floors below. It was worth a shot to check it out. Without hesitation, he approached the stairs, his movements getting smoother. He set off down the flights, each one taking him further into the depths of the facility. After a near eternity of steps, he came upon a door. He apprehensively pushed it open. Inside, a vast chamber appeared, a submarine lying at its center. Desks were strewn about, various plans and papers overflowing from them. A windowed view station was sunk into the far wall, high above his level. Mac couldn’t help but marvel at this gargantuan room. He set his hand on the railing of the catwalk the door opened to. He was thinking about how- PSHEW!!! Mac fell back from the bullet ricochet that glanced off the rails. He came from the cold and fell into the fire.
Please comment. Mac will finally finish his mission...
