Chapter 17: Action Man

Mac fell to the chilling grates with a hefty clang, rolling aside. He misjudged where the staircase was and found himself tumbling painfully down the hard steps. Grunting with every other bar to the spine, he slammed onto the slick floors. Landing on his back, his eyes pointed towards the ceiling. Ow was all he could think. He managed to tilt his head to see the work areas. An armed soldier rushed towards him. Mac set his shoe back on the bottom step. With a hearty shove, he slid himself out of the firing radius of the Uzi. Passing a stacked computer cart, MacGyver shot his arm out and clung to one of the structural poles. He swung into the aisle of desks, momentum carrying the operative. Struggling on the slippery floor, Mac stumbled to his feet, still moving at an impressive speed. If I had skates, I’d be fine he thought as his foot glided out from under him, sending him a little shake.

From behind, the heavy thunder of gunfire echoed. Mac turned his feet, letting physics take over. He skidded off the rest of his speed and took off down another row of equipment. He saw the submarine a few desks ahead. Mac almost pushed harder, but the boxy monitor on one table exploded in a shower of circuit boards and wires. Mac threw his hands in the air and crouched down. Mac turned to the adjacent desk and pulled down the intact monitor. He set the hardware down and slid it back down the row, holding the end of the cord. He tied off the coated wires around the desk leg and regained pace. Mac leapt to his feet once more, watching the encroaching gunmen. They raised their various weapons, finally getting a clear shot at Mac. They mirrored Mac’s slide, trying to skid into line. For a few moments they slid, but they were all yanked to the ice-cold floor. Mac saw their feet rest near the cord. He chuckled, but kept flying toward the metal beast. He raced up the bridge and approached the tower that allowed entry to the submarine. He hopped up the metal ladder rungs and looked over the rusty hatch. Suddenly, it lifted, a man’s head visible within. MacGyver grabbed the rim of the lid and dragged it to a close. With a sickening metallic thud, the man disappeared below. Mac swung his legs in and slid down the ladder within.

With a clap, his tennis shoes set down on the corrugated metal panels. He sidestepped the unconscious body and turned around. Pete stood before him. He smiled coldly. It fit in with the icy surroundings. Mac took a step back, slightly alarmed. His “friend” shot out an unusually lean fist. It landed square in Mac’s jaw. He fell back, still awake. Mac felt the dangerously solid ladder rung slap into his skull. A black abyss shrouded his vision…

Sorry, Mela. I've been less than timely with these stories. And by that I mean I let them hang for ungodly amounts of time. And I'm going to push to finish them soon. You have my word. For what it's worth.
