Headlines VI
January 1944 – June 1944

Soviet Union breaks through siege

January 27 1944
The long siege of Leningrad is finally over. Nine hundred days long the Nazis has tried to dominate over the population by making them starve. And still the marching Red Army has succeeded to push the Germans back far enough so that the artillery can’t hit the city anymore. The Nazi strategy nearly succeeded. During the long and hard winters, three hundred peoples has died because of hunger, sickness or cold each day. In total about one million victims has fallen. Despite that the inhabitants of Leningrad fought back and kept their distance until the Soviet troops hit back and pushed the Nazis back.

Rome liberated

June 4 1944
Troops of the American Fifth Army has marched into Rome. Their commander, the flamboyant general Mark Clark, had made the Italian capital as his primary target. He was determined to arrive sooner than all the other allied armies, even if he had to ignore the orders of chief commander for Italy, the British general Sir Harold Alexander. Only three days ago, Hitler ordered the German commander, field marshal Albert Kesselring, to retreat and declared Rome to ‘open city’. That saved the city of destructive street fights. Fortunately the historic places were remained unharmed. Now the Germans are gone the streets are overflowed with excited Italian civilians welcoming the American soldiers with open arms. A lot of American soldiers are totally exhausted of the heavy battles in Italy. After they were treated on wine, they collapsed and fell asleep on the streets. General Clark is the hero of the day, but critics propounds that his well known hunger for recognition has disturbed the plans of the allies.

War News III
Occupation and Resistance

By the summer of 1942 the German conquests reaches up from the French Atlantic Coast till the Kaukasus mountains in the Soviet Union. Industry, farms and workmen becomes the property of Germany. The politics of the Germans differed between the occupied countries. In Poland de population was forced into slavery and in Greece thousands peoples died of hunger when the crops were claimed by the German army. Their success depended mostly of the geography of the area. In mountainous areas like Yugoslavia, resistance groups could operated easily unnoticed. In even lands like the Netherlands and Denmark passive resistance had the shape of strikes, posters and patriotic graffiti more common.

Nazi propaganda
Ils donnent leur sang
donnez votre travail
pour sauver l’Europe du Bolchevisme

This text on German propaganda posters is encouraging French workers to participate in the struggle against communism. The German war industry is using ‘volunteers’ out of occupied countries, but also from East European slave workers and French prisoners of war. The increased recruiting drove a lot of young men to the resistance group.

Living in occupied Paris

During the occupation Paris remained the funfair of Europe where German soldiers were populating the cafés, theaters and clubs. For most French peoples life just went on as usual. Posters reminded them that their families and properties were safe as long they didn’t resist. Still a lot of bars and restaurants were kept for the German soldiers and on the Eiffel tower a swastika flag was waving.

Puppet as prime minister

Vidkun Quisling was leading before the war the Norwegian Nazi party and when the Germans invaded the country in 1940 they opposed him as the head of the Norwegian government. For the most Norwegians was this German puppet a hated man. In 1945 Quisling was convicted for treason and executed. His name became worldwide synonymous for traitor.

Always alert

‘Silence! The Germans fled, but their spies are left behind!’ This was printed on posters of the allies after the liberation of France in 1944 to remind the French that Germany was still a threat.

Disguised

The British Special Operations Executive, the S.O.E. counted more than eleven thousand agents. The S.O.E. was established in 1940 to collect information in the Germany occupied Europe, to perform sabotages and support resistance groups. Their target was, to say it with the British prime minister Winston Churchill’s words: ‘Putting Europe on fire’.

Secret battle force

The French ‘Maquis’ got established in 1943 after the Germans claimed four hundred thousand men to work in the German industry. Thousands of resistance groups were formed in distant countryside areas from peoples who tried to outrun the forced labor. In May 1944, the Maquis counted thirty five thousand members, however only eight thousand got enough ammunition to go into a serious battle of more than one day. After D-Day in 1944 thousands tons of equipment were dropped with parachutes for the Maquis who was attacking Germans in Central- and South France.

Secret radios

Agents of the S.O.E. in occupied Europe has been using suitcases the hide radios to send coded messages. Their arsenal contained explosives pens, bicycle pumps in a gun to use once and pistols with silencers that could be hidden in clothing.

Chapter 8
Briefing Operation Overlord
In a secret location in destroyed London
The Invasion of Normandy
D-Day 03:00 AM
June 6 1944

It was early that morning of June 6 1944. It was still dark even when Decision Day arrived three hours ago. This was the day operation Overlord would be executed. I was there from the start of the operation. After our escape from Auschwitz and helping O’ Neill out again I got promoted to the rank of major and first degree strategic thinker in the operation.
Starting the operation was a big job. It had to happen in the biggest secrecy and each time the Germans found out we had to put them on the wrong trail. During the starting phase of the operation I had been assigned to coordinate another mission which involved gold that had to be transported on a plane with navigator West. Except the plane crashed in a nightly blizzard around the Arctic Circle and was never found. Now the time had come to make the move on Overlord. From everywhere around the world the allies gathered around. There were mainly Americans, Canadians and English, but also defected Frenchmen, Dutchmen and Belgians.
The Stargate Company was reformed where in I now really got leadership over Jack, Chuck, Neill, Jesse, Tommy, Andrew and Charles and even over Murdoc. I didn’t really care if he liked it or not. I just remember that last times I saw him, when he tried to kill me. They all survived the long war years when the Company was split. It was so great to finally see them again. I went to Jack and hugged him as if it was the first time I saw him in twenty years. Thank God, it wasn’t that long but those two and a half years without him seemed like twenty to me.
‘Jack!’
‘Mac!’
‘Good to see you, buddy.’
‘Same here.’
I greeted the others as well.
‘How are you all been doing?’
‘Did some fightin’,’ Charles said with that Texan accent of his. ‘We sure cleaned up the mess in the East-Indian ocean.’
‘Yeah and the Pacific wasn’t a joke either,’ Jack said.
‘What happened?’
‘Well, the four of us had to deal with Japan after Pearl Harbor,’ Neill said. ‘We tried to save as many islands as we could out of the Japanese hands. I think the toughest battle we did was the Battle of Midway.’
‘Yeah, I heard something about that.’
‘Yeah, but I know we could’ve done more. We still got to free Saipan and Iwo Jima.’
‘We did everything we could,’ Chuck said.
‘What about you, MacGyver? What did you do after the attack on Pearl Harbor?’ Jesse wanted to know.
‘Yeah, tell something about your adventures,’ Andrew said.
‘Well, I was assigned as a troubleshooter for the American army.’
‘Troubleshooter? What’s that?’ Tommy asked.
‘Well, I had to do special assignments. I had to steal documents in Austria to find out where other Nazi outposts were to take them out and destroy their ammunition and food transport. I rescued an American spy, that got caught by the Germans.’
‘Sounds exciting,’ Jack said.
‘Yeah, but I got caught myself while trying to rescue the American spy. These were just two of the so many assignments I did. But there was one that turned out horribly for us.’
‘What happened?’
‘Eight months ago, two weeks after I rescued the American spy, O’ Neill and I were doing an assignment in Poland and we were caught.’
‘Of course you found a quick way out,’ Jack assumed.
The look I gave Jack changed his thoughts. ‘Didn’t you?’
‘We were put on the train to Auschwitz, the concentration camps.’
‘The concentration camps?’ Andrew asked.
‘What happens down there?’ Tommy asked.
‘Look, I don’t know about you, guys but I’ve seen hell in it’s purest way. The atrocities there really happens, they’re no exaggerations.’
‘What do they do than?’ Jesse asked.
‘Medical experiments on women, children and torturing.’
‘They torture in the Pacific too, Mac,’ Jack said. ‘We’ve been captured once or twice too, but we survived and so did you.’
‘Jack, there is slight difference between being captured in the Pacific and the concentration camps. Did you get any food or water?’
‘Well, it wasn’t haute cuisine but it was eatable.’
‘I had to do it with a small piece of bread and very small cup of nasty looking water. My fellow inmates were merely robust walking skeletons. The conditions there were far more worse than where you’ve been captured.’
‘Well, we always did have good weather.’
‘The weather on this side of the planet is always bad.’
‘How did you escape than?’
‘After they experimented on me, tortured O’ Neill and with the help of my new friend Sam Bolinski,’ I said.
‘Experimented?’ Charles said. ‘What did they do to you?’
‘There was this crazy doctor, who tried to make me part of the Aryan race.’
‘What?’
‘They’re trying to make a nation of Aryans to rule over the world. Supremacy of the white race. Can you believe that?’
‘And how did they try to do that?’ Chuck asked.
‘They injected blue chemicals into my eyes. The blue markings are gone now but earlier this year I almost had blue eyes.’
‘So the experiment has failed?’ Neill asked.
‘Yeah, only my eye white turned blue and that faded over the months. Than they used the water test torture on O’ Neill and broke his hand but the man didn’t give in and on the moment they were gassing us we escaped.’
‘I’ve heard on the gassing but doesn’t that happen in groups?’ Andrew asked.
‘Luckily for us they wanted to use a new gas chamber to test it. So only O’ Neill, Sam and me were in that chamber.’
‘And you have escape it of course,’ Jack said.
‘I destroyed the door. Than we crawled underneath the barbed wire. Some areas behind the camp were mined down. Sam knew a place where there weren’t any mines. He most likely gave his life to save ours. They caught him in the act. We’re hoping he’s still alive.’
‘You really had tough time, Mac.’
‘Yeah, but by helping out O’ Neill, I got promoted till the rank of major. Just as I got the Medal of Honor for taking initiative to help out in the attack of Pearl Harbor.’
The room slowly flooded with the allies and now it was time to give the briefing about the operation. Generals Thornton and Hammond were there and so was colonel O’ Neill. I stood next to him.
‘OK, everybody. Time to pay attention,’ general Thornton said.
Everyone’s attention went to General Thornton.
‘General Eisenhower, chief commander of the allied forces in Europe has given his permission to execute Operation Overlord. This is going to be the biggest amphibian operation in the history of mankind. We have to invade Europe to free it from the Nazi horrors, now that they have bitten into Operation Fortitude.’
‘It’s been rumored Hitler’s losing the war since Operation Barbarossa in Russia. Russia fought against Nazi-Germany completely on their own. So president Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Churchill agreed to build a second front on European soil. Hitler suffered great losses in the Soviet Union because of the extreme cold weather conditions. The weather conditions here are going to be practically the same, except not so extreme,’ general Hammond continued.
‘That’s why we’re going to attack now,’ O’ Neill said. ‘The weather is bad enough to assume that they think we won’t attack. We’re going to take them by surprise. It’s going to be our own little version of a Blitzkrieg.’
‘From here on, planes will fly over the French coasts and drop parachutists to attack from behind the bunkers and to cover the ones who’re coming from over the Canal. Then we have to break through the Atlantikwall,’ I continued. ‘These are the locations of the landings: Sword Beach, Juno Beach, Gold Beach, Omaha Beach, Utah Beach and Pointe Du Hoc. The Englishmen amongst us will have to take on Sword Beach. Your mission is to free the beach so that second attack wave can arrive safely on the beach. Than you will carry on further into the country and go to the Pegasus bridge. The landings on the beach start at 07:25 am.’
General Thornton continued the briefing. ‘Juno Beach is for the Canadian 3rd infantry division, the British 2nd armor brigade and one British marine command. This is one of the most heavily defended beaches. The most heavily defended beach is Omaha. On every beach there are mines, so be careful when you’re on the beaches.’
‘Gold Beach is for the 50th British division and 8th British armor brigade of the British Second Army,’ general Hammond spoke. ‘You will have to conquer of the Arromanches and Bayeux to cut off the road from Caen to Bayeux. Than you will have to make contact with the Americans and the British. That beach will be defended by the 716th German division and for the most part of the first battalion of the 352nd division of Le Hamel. Your landings starts also at 07:25 am.’
‘For Omaha Beach,’ O’ Neill said, ‘the 29th infantry division of the US will land in the West of the beach and in the East the first infantry. The beach is five kilometers long from Saint-Honorin till Vierville-sur-Mer. Our primary objective is to conquer the area between Port-En-Bessin and the river the Vire so that we can march up to the South of Saint-Lo. We leave one hour earlier, at 06:25 am.’
O’ Neill paused for a second and took a breath before he continued.
‘Gentlemen, like my superior general Thornton said, Omaha Beach is the most heavily defended out of all those beaches. That beach is going to be a place of hell. Don’t think you’ll be the one to make it back, because you won’t. If you do than God had mercy on your souls.’
‘Okay,’ I continued. ‘Utah Beach is the beach in the most Western part of the beaches. This is for the Fourth American Division. That beach will get four attack waves provided with a few armored vehicles and fire back up from the marines. That appears to be the least defended beach of them all, but it doesn’t mean you don’t have to be careful.’
‘Point-Du-Hoc is the last one the list that needs to be taken in,’ general Thornton explained. ‘This is a big target for us and it has to be taken out because of their artillery. They got six 155 mm canons. This is for the US 2nd Ranger Battalion. It’s a heavy and difficult mission and will be led by lieutenant-colonel James Earl Rudder. And that’s about all there is to it.’
‘Yes,’ Hammond carried on. ‘In short, gentlemen, the battle order is from east to west. The British 6th air landing division including the 8th and 9th parachutist battalion from the 3rd parachutist brigade and the 1st Canadian parachutist battalion are going to do an air landing from the east of the Orne river with parachute and hover planes to protect the left flank. The British special units will land near Ouistreham in the Queen Red sector, the most left sector.’
‘Than the British 3rd infantry division will land together with the British 27th armor brigade on Sword Beach from Ouistreham till Lion and more British special units will land far right on Sword Beach,’ O’ Neill said than I continued.
‘The Canadian 3rd infantry division, the 2nd British armor brigade and the marine command who’ll land on Juno Beach are going from St. Aubin till La Riviere. The British 46th Commandoes will land on a cliff at the left side of the river Orne to destroy a build artillery battery.’
‘Commando 47 (RM) will land on the west flank of Gold Beach,’ Thornton said, ‘while the seventh American army force lands with other units on Utah Beach around Pouppevile en La Madeleine.’
‘The US 101st air landing division lands around Vierville and the US 82th air landing division lands around Sainte-Mère-Eglise to protect the right flank,’ O’ Neill said.
‘Is everything understood, now?’ general Thornton asked.
‘Sir, yes, sir,’ everyone replied.
‘Good, now lets all go to war!!!’

Everybody began to leave and take their gear to go to Normandy. While I was taking my stuff O’ Neill called for me.
‘Hey, MacGyver?’
‘Yeah?’
‘There’s someone who wants to see you.’
‘Really? Who?’ I asked.
‘Hello, son.’ (The track Evan and Kayleigh/Kayleigh loves Lenny from The Butterfly Effect starts playing here)
Astonished and surprised I dropped the things I was holding when I heard the voice of my father. I turned around and saw my father.
‘Dad?’
‘That’s right.’
‘I don’t believe it,’ I said and hugged him. ‘Thanks, O’ Neill.’
O’ Neill nodded and left.
‘What are you doing here?’
‘I uh… I think I just missed my son.’
‘I miss you too dad. And mom and Harry and grandmother and Kate. How did you get here, anyway?’
‘I talked with the peoples of West Point. A lot of my buddies work there now. Those who survived the Great War at least. They arranged this for me. We were so worried about you. You never wrote us and that sure shook up your mother.’
‘Well, I’m sorry, dad, but the trainings on West Point were always merciless and by the end of the day you’re just so beaten up, you can hardly write anymore. And than after the attack on Pearl Harbor we just got sucked in the war. We actually never fulfilled our trainings. After the attack everybody got assigned to a section of the army and was immediately sent to their outposts. Jack, Jesse, Chuck and Neill got send to the Pacific while I had assignments to do in the heart of the war machine. Did you ever wrote?’
‘Yeah, well your mother did. She wrote such beautiful letters. Too bad you never got them.’
‘Yeah.’
‘So what assignments have you done?’
‘I stole documents that were important to the allies and I saved an American spy in Austria. That among other things. I’ve done many assignments but it’s just too much to tell about.’
‘Sounds like the assignments I did during the Great War. Harry and me served in the same company. We’ve been through a lot together.’
‘I’ve been through a lot too. Except this is the first mission I’m going to do with my friends.’
‘What mission?’
‘I’m not so sure if I can say that, dad.’
‘Classified stuff?’
‘Yeah.’
‘I know how the military works, son. It’s alright, if you can’t tell me.’
‘In short, dad, we’re going to take them out.’
‘Go get them, son.’
‘You’ll read all about it in the newspaper when it’s over. If this mission succeeds than the end of the war might be in sight. If not, I don’t know.’
‘So, it’s important, huh?’
‘Very. But enough about that. Tell me, how are things in Minnesota?’
‘Not much. We’ve been trying to make it. Summers are hot, winters are cold. Though, harvest wasn’t much this year, Harry said. Celia still cooks as the best and your mother. Well, she’s still as caring as ever. The way she cared for Kate when she was sick was wonderful’
‘What?’ I asked. ‘Is she sick?’
‘No, no, no!’ my father said quickly. ‘I said she was. She had pneumonia last winter and very serious too.’
‘Why didn’t you notify me about this?’
‘You really think they would’ve given you leave?’
‘No, but I would’ve taken it anyway. Dad, you should’ve told me.’
‘No, son. We figured since you never wrote and the letters your mother send never gotten to you, it would have been pointless. Besides your mother took so much care for her. Stayed with her at night at her bedside, guarding over her like an angel.’
‘That sounds like mom, alright.’
‘She was such a good nurse. That’s how I got to know her during the Great War. I got injured and she helped me with my recovery. Your mom and Kate became the best of friends after you left. They were always supportive over each other. All those cold evenings during the winters near the fireplace, they always helped each other.’
‘I miss those evenings and I miss celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas with you guys. All because of this damn war.’
‘They miss you too. A lot. Especially your mother and Kate.’
‘Well, dad. Tell them not to worry. I’m fine as you can see.’
‘But for how much longer?’
‘I hope longer than I think. If this operation works and we can take down Nazi-Germany, this all will be over.’
‘But when?’
‘The way how I see it, it’s going to take at least another year. After that I don’t know.’
My father nodded.
‘The world’s changing, right?’ he asked.
‘Yeah. Everything is going to change from now on.’
‘In a good way or a bad way?’
‘In a good way I hope.’
There was a moment of silence.
‘Look, dad. It’s been great seeing you again after all these years but…’
‘Oh, yeah,’ he interrupted me. ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to keep you behind.’
‘No dad, it’s ok, but I have to go now. The invasion starts at 06:25 am for us. I’m going to Omaha Beach and we have to be at the shore within two and a half hours.’
‘Sure, son.’
My dad and I shared a look for a while. That look said more than what we have ever said to each other. We both had to keep our tears behind and we ran into each other arms. It was a long and warm hug.
‘I’m sorry, son,’ he said while wiping his tears away.
‘That’s alright, dad.’
‘Just be careful.’
‘I will dad. Tell them I’m alright and tell mom not to worry. Give them my love and regards.’
‘I will son.’
‘Okay!’ I said and than my dad left.
(The music slowly fades away and the noise of the ocean takes over)
We were on open sea in an open amphibian tank, it was cold and the skies were gray. Hundreds of these tanks were going to the shores of Normandy. It was foggy and that’s why we couldn’t see the bunkers ahead but we could hear the artillery fire and explosions from ahead. We all carried a lot more equipment than usual and it was only a matter of minutes before we would end up in hell… again.
I looked around me and saw everyone of the Stargate Company praying and looking scared out of their eyes, except for Murdoc. He still had that arrogant dark look in his eyes. He looked like he was going to have a good time. I looked at O’ Neill, he had a determined look in his eyes, something that can match up with Murdoc’s look but O’ Neill’s look was a bit different. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t hide the fact that he also was a bit nervous. From out of his eye corners he looked at me. I guess he saw that he and I had the same look. We were both scared and we knew that from each other.
I looked at Jesse. From all of us he was the most scared and he looked kind of seasick. Than he puked on the tank, but also on Murdoc.
Murdoc grabbed him and hissed: ‘That wasn’t smart!’
‘Hey, let him go,’ O’ Neill said.
‘I’m sorry, sir,’ Jesse said frightened.
‘It can happen, Jess,’ Neill said.
Jesse tapped my shoulder.
‘What is it, Jesse?’
‘I wet my pants,’ he admitted.
I looked back at O’ Neill.
‘That’s not so bad, Jesse,’ I said. ‘We’re going to get wet anyway.’
‘I wanna go home,’ he said almost crying.
‘We all want to, Jesse, but we have an assignment first. If we succeed we can think about going home.’
‘Alright, we’re almost there!’ O’ Neill shouted. ‘Remember, once we’re out of the tank, we only got obstacles and barbwire to hide. Be careful for the mines on the beach. Once on the beach just go straight ahead to take out the bunkers and the MG-42 nests. Try to stick together. If we lose each other, you know, where to go to. Then we’ll see you there, if not we’ll see each other in hell. And above all let’s get these motherf*ckers!!!’
The tank arrived on the beach and the door fell open. The first ones got immediately killed.
‘Look out!’ someone yelled.
There were bullets from the MG-42’s everywhere and bombing and mines explosions. Something exploded in the sea that caused our tank to rock. We all fell over each other.
‘Get moving!’ O’ Neill yelled.
‘We can’t, sir!’ Neill shouted.
The sound of the shooting and explosions were incredibly loud, we couldn’t hear each other.
‘Everybody get out of the tank,’ I screamed. ‘Come on!’
I rolled over the side of the tank along with a few others in the cold water. ‘Hide behind it!’
Instead of going to the shore, we went to deeper water to hide behind our tank. We felt bullets siphoning through the water but it didn’t hit us. The water turned red from all the blood. Hundreds or thousands of our fellow soldiers died in battle. Those who didn’t got killed got marked for the lives from war injuries and missing limbs.
The tanks besides ours got blown up by artillery fire.
‘Move it! We have to get out of the water!!!’ I screamed. ‘Stick together!!’
Slowly we moved through the water. It wasn’t easy with all the equipment and deadly with our speed. I pushed the ones in front of me to make them move. ‘Go!’
We got to our first obstacle and tried to hide behind it. ‘Stay low and run from obstacle to obstacle. That’s the only way to get to the beach.’
‘Sorry sir, but that’s not gonnaaaaaarrrrggghhh…’ the soldier speaking got killed. Some more got killed. The shooting was the biggest problem. It made it too difficult to move because of the constant shooting. The bunkers were at the back of the beach hidden behind fog and clouds of smoke. Some of us were shooting back but on who or what?
I tried to see where the others of my company were and than a mine exploded nearby me. It was a thunderous explosion that hurt my eardrum and than I got that blurry slow motion vision. It caused an intense ringing in my ears and besides the ringing, I couldn’t hear anything. I saw soldiers dying, explosions developing in slow motions. Than everything stopped moving. It was like someone took a picture of this moment and I was stuck in the picture. I could study everything in detail. I saw medics taking care of injured people. I saw a soldier without any equipment, nothing and two obstacles further I saw O’ Neill and Jack Dalton who had their arms up. They were probably waving at me before everything froze. The ringing in my ears became more intense that it began to hurt and than it suddenly stopped and I was thrown back in reality. I hit the ground from the mine explosion and I kept my hand on my ear. When I looked at my hand I saw dark red blood on it. My ear was bleeding. I kept my other hand on my other ear to check the hearing but there appeared no damage being done.
‘Come on! There they are!’ I said pointing to the two Jacks.
We ran up to the two Jacks were some of us died. Now we were about halfway the beach but the visibility was still low. The artillery fire became more intense now that we were closer to the enemy lines.
‘Sir, what’s our plan, now?’ one of our co-soldiers asked.
‘We just have to keep moving. We’re half way, but be careful at the thicker sand. There are more mines and barbwire. Alright, let’s move it,’ O’ Neill ordered
We kept moving forward till we got to the thicker sand.
‘MacGyver, start cutting those barbwires, we’ll give you cover,’ O’ Neill said.
I took out my cutter and began cutting while O’ Neill, Jack, Jesse, Chuck and Neill started shooting on the MG-42 nests.
‘How’s it going, Mac?’
‘I’m cutting.’
‘Hurry up! Those nests are not going to stay empty for ever. There’s always one coming.’
‘I’m cutting!’
I cut the barbed wire. ‘There.’
‘Now explode those mines.’
‘Got it.’
The mines were attached to each other and hidden in the sand but if you looked carefully you could see the tripwire. Cutting the tripwire will make the mines go off. So I cut it. The mines exploded one by one making the road free for us. We had to ran back a little bit to stay unharmed from the blasts.
‘Alright, good going,’ O’ Neill said.
We carried on till we got the bunkers in sight.
‘Finally, the bunkers! Alright, if we take them out, we succeeded.’
‘Is everyone here?’ I asked. ‘Jack, Chuck, Neill, Andrew, Tommy, Charles, Murdoc. Where is Jesse?’
Jesse came running to us.
‘I’m here!’
‘Good. We haven’t got all day, you know?’
‘Alright, Neill, use the rocket launcher on those bunkers.’
Neill grabbed for his rocket launcher.
‘Come on, help me out, Chucky,’ he said.
Chuck loaded his rocket launcher and than Neill fired at a bunker. I saw the rocket flying into a bunker where it exploded. Neill fired at another bunker which ended like it’s predecessor. On our part of the beach the firing stopped and we ran up to a bunker. We pressed ourselves against the wall. It was like only five percent of the beach was secure but there was still plenty of German fire, so we can’t really say the beach was secure.
‘Gather up!’ O’ Neill screamed.
‘We’re here!’ I said.
‘Good. There are MG-42 nests behind us. We’re going to have to take them out before we can go on. We’re through the blockade but not out of hell yet. We’re going to have to go in turns and give each other covering fire.’
‘Who’s going first?’ I asked.
No one responded. ‘Not all at once, please.’
‘No time for games, boys,’ O’ Neill said. ‘Dalton and Murdoc, you’re going first.’
‘Fine by me,’ Murdoc said and he appeared to be more than willing to go first.
Jack came up to me.
‘Good luck, my friend,’ I said. ‘I’ll cover you.’
‘You got no idea how that sounds out of your mouth, Mac,’ he said smiling.
‘Yes, I do.’
Jack and Murdoc came to the corner of the bunker.
‘OK, wait for my signal,’ O’ Neill said. ‘You guys, ready?’
‘Ready!’ Jack said.
‘Covering fire!’
We started shooting and I shot for the first time since we got sucked in the war. We fired at the MG-42 nests. It was all a direct hit and Jack and Murdoc were running for it.
‘OK, they’re behind the bunkers. Jesse and Chuck, you’re next. Covering fire!!!’
Jesse and Chuck ran to Jack and Murdoc.
‘Neill and Andrew. Covering fire!!!’
Neill and Andrew followed them.
‘Tommy and Charles! Covering fire!!!’
Also Tommy and Charles made it and now there was only O’ Neill and me left.
‘OK, we’re the only ones left,’ O’ Neill said.
‘Well, I’m ready, sir.’
‘I’m sure you are, but let’s not rush into things, huh?’
‘What?’
O’ Neill took a grenade and threw it in the bunker. We heard laughter. O’ Neill and I shared a confused look and the grenade got thrown back.
‘What the…,’ O’ Neill said and threw the grenade quickly back in the bunker and it exploded. ‘How about that? Nazis with a sense of humor. You ready?’
‘As I’ll ever be.’
‘Covering fire!!!’
I began to run with the bullets zooming past the ground. I ran up to my friends behind the bunker and O’ Neill followed me right on my tail.
‘I can’t believe, we made it!’ Jesse cheered.
‘Not so fast, Jess. Let’s take those bunkers out,’ O’ Neill said. ‘Where’s my flamethrower?’
‘I’m right here, sir,’ Murdoc said dangerously. ‘It’s time to fry.’
Murdoc entered the bunker and fried them with bloodlust and pleasure. He even laughed.
‘Alright, that’s it. It’s over!’ O’ Neill yelled.
We succeeded in taking over the beach. And that’s how we freed the first land from Nazi-Germany. This was now allied soil. For the first time since the start of the war there seemed to be hope again. Even though we still have a long road ahead until we can get to Berlin.
‘Hey, look. Look!’ Jesse said pointing to sky.
We looked up and saw more allied troops landing from above.
‘They’re the ones who were supposed to give us cover from the back. Where the hell have they been?’ O’ Neill wondered.
‘Hey, colonel?’ Charles said. ‘You think, we can have some rest now?’
‘Well, you’ve earned your two minutes rest. Meanwhile MacGyver and I will work out the next part of our mission.’
With O’ Neill, we took out our plans how we could carry on with the operation and free the rest of Europe while the others enjoyed the view of the parachutists coming out of the sky.
