August 1945 – September 1945

Destructive bomb dropped on Japan

August 6 1945
At 8.15 a.m. this morning an American bomb thrower, the Enola Gay has dropped one single bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. A new era of warfare has been called in. As a consequence of this one nuclear explosion an estimation of eighty thousand peoples has been killed in a blink of an eye and a big part of Hiroshima has simply been vanished of the face of the earth. The victims in the epicenter of the explosion are completely vaporized, only a burned shadow reminds them of their existence. The radiation level in the area is dangerously high. A mushroom cloud of smoke and dust that rises eight kilometers high above the city is the only thing to be seen. The force of the explosion is due to the energy that is released during a nuclear chain reaction. The atom bomb has been developed in the US by an international team of scientist in a strict secret project with the codename ‘Manhattan’. The US decided to attack when the Japanese refused to ultimate surrender. Still, rumors are going around that the use of atomic weapons was not necessary. It looks like if Japan doesn’t capitulate now, more nuclear attacks can be expected. The allies think this attack can lead up to the end of the war.

The young survivors of the Hiroshima bomb are carrying masks over their noses and mouths, so they won’t get confronted by the smell of the corpses that hangs now over the ruins of the city. Peoples are now living in improvised shelters in the destroyed remains of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Victory celebrated

August 15 1945
When Japan decided to surrender peoples started to celebrate spontaneous in the United States and Australia. In San Francisco at the American west coast the news was greeted with a wild concert of sirens, honking cars and squealing ship horns. In nearly every American cities the traffic got stuck when the streets flooded with singing, cheering and dancing masses of the population. In Washington D.C. the military police had to be called in for when a giant and excited crowd tried to get into the White House. In New York about two million peoples flooded together on Times Square and in the Australian Sydney a million party goers went wild. They charged army trucks and jeeps, pulled the soldiers off and embraced them. It was very different in the Japanese Tokyo. The inhabitants wandered defeated through their destroyed city to express their sorrow at the imperial palace.

Official capitulation

September 2 1945
There were grey clouds over the Bay of Tokyo this morning when an official Japanese delegation arrived on the deck of the American battleship Missouri to sign for the ultimate surrender. The Japanese gave in on their defeat when a second nuclear bomb killed over sixty-five thousand peoples in Nagasaki. However the allies celebrated their victory last month, the ceremony of today declares that World War II is officially over.

War Technology

Scientists and technicians played an important role during World War II. A lot of important field battles weren’t done at the front but in laboratories and factories. Every aspect of the efforts of war was studied scientifically, from developing weapons to defining supplies. The needs of war also gave new impulses to researches that had started in the thirties, like the radar, computer science, nuclear splitting and the jet engine. The war combined forces out of science and industry like not one occurrence could’ve done it in peace time. Still other aspects of scientific progress, like the invention of the atom bomb would cast a shadow over the world that would hang over it for years.

Intelligent advice

The brilliant physicist Albert Einstein fled in 1933 out of Nazi-Germany to the US. He warned president Roosevelt for the threatening danger if Germany became the pioneer in developing the atom bomb.

Enigma-code

The signals of the German ‘Enigma’-machine, that was used for secret military communication, has been embarrassing the enemy code-experts for years. When the operator pushed a key, rotating elements underneath the keyboard started to work and made another letter appear. The receiving Enigma-machine reversed the trial. The British deciphering of the Enigma-code was of the technical forces from the war.

Timely warnings

Radars can follow hostile aircraft from an American fly deck ship in the Pacific. The word ‘radar’ comes from ‘Radio Direction And Ranging’, a name that was given to the device in 1942. The radar was developed in the 1930’s and formed one of the key technologies of the war. In the Battle of England the British used ground radars to detect hostile bomb throwers formations. Later radars got installed in German bomb throwers to track targets. The allies found the enemy back in the stretched areas of the Pacific and focused the artillery on it on their battleships

Chapter 12
Coming Home
Mission City, Minnesota
November 16 1945

The empty streets of Minnesota. It was cold when I came back in my hometown. For the first time in almost five years I was back home. The five longest years of my life. Unfortunately during those five years I never had the time to write home. We always had to be on full alert so I didn’t have any contact with the home front. Except that time I met my dad in London before the Normandy invasion. Do have to say though, Mission City, Minnesota didn’t change so much over the years. Everything still seemed the same. I passed by the lake when I was ice fishing and met Kate. I hold up to think back of that moment.
‘Howdy,’ I said. ‘Interested in birds?’
‘As much as you are in ice fishing,’ she answered smiling. ‘Are they biting?’
‘No, not really.’
‘Three fishes? That isn’t so bad.’
‘Well…,’
‘I probably can’t even catch one.’
‘Sure you can. You wanna try it?’
‘Uh, no.’
‘Come on, try it.’
I also remembered the moment I helped her out catching a fish.
‘I know what the problem is. Got any aluminum?’
‘What?’
‘Aluminum. Stuff that you wrap around food.’
‘I think so, why?’
‘I’ll show you.’
She gave the pole back to me as she started to mess around in her backpack.
‘Here I got one,’ she said and gave it to me. ‘What are you going to do with that?’
‘It’s just a little something my grandpa taught me,’ I said while I folded up the piece of aluminum and attached it to the fishing hook.
I gave her the fishhook back. A few moments passed and then strike. She caught a fish.
‘I can’t believe this works,’ she laughed.
‘I couldn’t believe it at first either, but hey… they work.’
I continued my way home through the forest. It was so peaceful and quiet up there. Far, far away from all that horror I’ve seen. Yeah, I’m glad I was home. The United States was one of the very few countries in the world that didn’t suffer war damage. Though at one point I heard Nazi U-Boats were creeping around in front of the East Coast and the coast of Miami, Florida. So we may not have suffered war damage, I think the government can cough up billions of dollars to pay for the war damage they’ve caused.
I zipped up my coat all the way up because the cold was biting and placed my hands back in my pockets. Now I kept walking until I arrived back on Harry’s farm. I saw him working on one of the fields. Carefully I approached him.
‘Harry?’ (The music fades away here)
The old man stopped shoveling, when he heard his name and turned around.
‘Bud?’ he asked astonished.
‘Harry!’
‘Bud!’
We fell in each others arms.
‘Bud, I can’t believe it’s you.’
‘It is me, Harry. You better believe it.’
‘We were so worried about you. You never wrote us,’ he said while letting go.
‘There was never any good moment to write and when we got send to the war…’
‘What took you so long?’
‘I had to remain in duty for almost another two months after Japan has signed their Instrument of Surrender. They just couldn’t release everyone of their service at once.’
‘I see.’
I looked around at the farm.
‘Hey, how come the farm looks so depressing?’
‘While you were away, we had our shares of problems and tragedies as well.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘Go and see your mother. She’s inside the house,’ he said avoiding the question. ‘I’ll be right there.’
Harry turned his back to me and continued shoveling. I just did what he said and went to see my mother.
I entered the house putting my bags on the ground and entered the living room. She was sitting in a rocking chair in front of the burning fire place. I walked up to her and saw she was holding a mug with tea in it under a blanket, looking concentrated into the fire.
‘Mom,’ I said touching her shoulder and bending through my knees.
‘Son?’ she said hugging me. ‘Is it really you?’
‘Yes it is me, mom.’
‘Why didn’t you never wrote us?’ she asked when we let go.
‘The military trainings were pretty merciless and grueling. Jack and I were always dead tired when we came back and than the war broke out at the Pearl. Didn’t dad gave you my love and regards? I saw him once in London before we invaded Normandy.’
‘Yes, he did.’
‘By the way, where is dad?’
Harry entered the room.
‘Mom, where’s dad?’
‘Son, dad’s…’
‘And where is grandma and Kate?’
‘Bud,’ Harry said while sitting down, ‘James and Celia passed away in car accident in December last year. The car slipped of the road into the Millers Creek. They both drowned.’ (The track Madeline's New Secret from North and South starts playing here)
‘December last year?’
‘Yeah.’
‘I was in Belgium that time in the middle of the Battle of the Bulge,’ I remembered. ‘And where’s Kate?’
Harry and mom shared a concerned look.
‘Hey, come on. Where’s Kate?’
‘She’s with your dad and your grandmother.’
‘What?’
‘Two years ago she suffered of a terrible pneumonia,’ mom said. ‘A year later it struck back. She died a couple of weeks before the accident.’
Stumped and defeated I sat down on the edge of the fireplace. It felt like I lost everything. ‘First I lost Chuck and Jesse in battle, than Andrew and Tommy and Charles. Now dad, grandmother and Kate. The war really took everything from me.’
‘Not everything,’ she said comforting.
‘What do you mean?’
She got up and left the living room. A few moments later, she came back with a little boy. Questioned I looked at Harry and mom.
‘Say hello to your son,’ mom said.
‘My son?’
‘Sam, this is your father.’
The kid was looking at me with these big eyes, not really comprehending what was going on. He was more interested in his toy he was holding. (The music fades away here)
‘Sam? I like that name. I had a friend in war named Sam,’ I said remembering Sam Bolinski.
‘His full name is Sean A. Malloy.’
‘Hey, Sam, I’m your dad.’
The kid hardly responded.
‘He’s shy,’ she said. ‘But you’ll get to know him. Alright, sweetheart, you can go back and play now.’
‘But…,’ I began.
‘Kate was pregnant, when you left.’
‘Well, things went kinda fast, in that brief period of time we were together,’ I recollected. ‘Why didn’t she tell me?’ I wondered when I sat back down.
‘She probably didn’t want you to get worried,’ she said. ‘She knew how important it was for you to get your military training.’
‘How did she die?’
‘She died peacefully with no pain.’
‘That’s good,’ I said. ‘Is she buried with dad and grandmother?’
‘No, but it’s on the same cemetery.’
‘I’ll have to go and see her.’
‘Son, you’ve just got home, don’t go again.’
‘It’s just up to the cemetery and back, mom. I’m not leaving again for another five years.’
‘Have you eaten already?’
‘Yeah.’
‘Something decent, I mean.’
‘Not since the past five years. The meals at the mess of West Point sucked and after the war the food became worse.’
‘Look, I’ll make something for all of us.’
‘Sounds great,’ Harry said.

Twenty minutes later, I was finishing up my late breakfast. Fresh omelet with bacon. That was a real meal of royalty. Those canned eggs tasted like nothing. Harry and mom finished theirs before I finished mine.
‘So are you going to tell us what you all have been through?’
‘Yeah, but not in front of the kid. Things happened to me, I don’t want him know nothing about,’ I said.
‘You finished, sweetheart?’ mom asked.
The kid nodded. ‘OK, than you can go out and play again.’
After the kid left the room I started my story.
‘It’s a long story.’
‘We’ve got time, bud,’ Harry said.
‘Alright, upon arrival at West Point, we immediately got drilled like soldiers are supposed to. My driller and now best friend is Colonel Jack O’ Neill. We’ve been through a lot together. We did missions in Europe and Asia. Dozens of them. He drilled us to make us to perfect soldiers. He was under command of two generals. Generals Peter Thornton and George Hammond.’
I put the final piece of the egg in my mouth and placed my fork and knife on the plate the way it’s supposed to.
‘What was the name of your company?’ Harry asked.
‘We were known as the Stargate Company. Jack, Neill, Chuck, Jesse, Andrew, Charles, Tommy and Murdoc. We’ve met these guys on the Point and became close friends.’
‘You mentioned those names before.’
‘Yeah, six of them are dead. Chuck, Jesse, Andrew, Charles, Tommy and Murdoc. Anyway, during the training we entered a Bushmaster competition.’
‘Bushmaster? What’s that?’
‘It’s a simulated battle in which the soldiers have to retrieve a whistle to stop it,’ Harry explained.
‘Good, Harry,’ I said with approval.
‘They used to these kind of competition from the beginning of the century.’
‘Yeah, and it paid off. That’s how I got my dog tag,’ I said while taking from underneath my shirt. ‘It has my name on it on this metal plate. It shows that you have the seven army values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage- and the "Cadet Honor Code". Cadets don’t lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do.’
‘Congratulations,’ my mom said.
‘Thanks, that’s what colonel O’ Neill said.’
‘Than what?’
‘Six months passed mostly training us. But also as part of the reward we earned in the Bushmaster Competition, we got a trip to see Pearl Harbor on Hawaii. To have a look on how the Navy works. That’s when the war started for us. We were on our tour when Japan attacked that day.’
‘Oh, my God.’
‘And you know me, mom, I’m always the first one to respond. We saved seventeen lives.’
‘That’s amazing.’
‘That’s how I got this Medal of Honor,’ I said pointing to my shoulder. ‘. It’s the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. Distinguishing myself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of your life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States. This also got me up to the rank of lieutenant.’
‘You’re a lieutenant?’
‘No, in fact, I’m a major but I’m still getting there.’
‘Pardon the intrusion.’
‘I received the Medal of Honor two months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. That’s when the Stargate Company got torn apart. You see, I was sent with the colonel and the generals to Europe. Jack and the others, Neill, Chuck and Jesse had to remain in Asia to free the islands in the Pacific. Andrew, Charles, Tommy and Murdoc were sent to the East-Indian Ocean. I was stationed in Europe for nearly two years without my friends. Doing one mission after the other.’
‘What did those mission involve?’ Harry asked.
‘From stealing documents in Austria to rescuing prisoners of war at the Hungarian border.’
‘And you never got caught?’
‘Well, once, maybe twice on real bad luck. But I always escaped.’
To spare my mother I decided not to tell of what I’ve seen in Auschwitz, nor what they’ve done to me.
‘Than after a daring and deadly escape out of Poland, I got promoted again, this time to the rank of major, I was stated as first degree thinker in a grand scale operation that had to take place in June 1944.’
‘Are you talking about D-Day?’ mom asked.
‘Yeah. That was when I’ve seen dad before the invasion.’
‘I see.’
‘Yeah, he told me everything was fine and well at the time.’
‘It was.’
‘Than why didn’t he tell about Kate’s pregnancy?’
‘For the same reason as she did. Not to make you worry.’
After a moment of silence she told me to go on. ‘Go on!’
‘So with the American, the British and Canadian armies, we attacked the French coast in order to breakthrough their defense lines. The beach we took on was the most defended one. A piece of hell, but we managed to breakthrough. Operation Overlord lasted until we freed Paris and from there on we continued our way to Berlin.’
I sipped my coffee before proceeding. ‘By the time we’ve reached the Belgium Ardennes and participated in the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge, we were sent to Berlin for the final battle. Another invasion that took months of preparations. By the end of April this year we’ve reached the Reichstag building. Unfortunately Hitler committed suicide so we were unable the catch him.’
‘Did they find the body?’
‘In the Reichstag’s garden they did find burned remains of two peoples. They assumed it’s Hitler and his lover Eva Braun. When we took in the Reichstag building the war for the most part was over in Europe. Germany signed his Instrument of Surrender on May 7th. During that final battle for Berlin we lost Chuck and Jesse and Andrew, Charles and Tommy. Though the war machine was taken out there was still the Japanese threat. Japan was responsible for taking us into the war.’
‘That was why the atom bomb was used, right?’ mom asked.
‘Yeah, it was on presidential orders. We didn’t know what the effect of this new bomb would be, but no one expected that one single bomb would completely destroy an entire city. So they send us from Tinian to Hiroshima for the drop off. When the bomb was dropped and we’ve returned to base, we protested in further use of the bomb.’
‘But the president had a different opinion?’ Harry asked.
‘Yeah, than Nagasaki followed and more nuclear attacks were prepared. Thank God it wasn’t needed. The consequences are catastrophic. First they wanted to send me to scout out Hiroshima but due to the fallout that appeared to be impossible. Besides even than I would’ve refused to walk around in that kill zone. Radiation level out there is dangerously high.’
‘What is a fallout?’ mom asked.
‘Fallout is the residual radiation hazard from a nuclear explosion, so named because it "falls out" of the atmosphere into which it is spread during the explosion. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust created when a nuclear weapon explodes. This radioactive dust, consisting of hot particles, is a kind of radioactive contamination. It can lead to contamination of the food chain. Another term for a fallout is called black rain.’
‘So after the bombings Japan surrendered?’
‘Yeah, it took a couple of weeks to get everything arranged. By the start of September they signed their Instrument of Surrender. And that was the official ending of the war.’
‘The world has changed, isn’t it?’ mom said.
‘Big time. The world from before the war is gone and the world after the war is one big question mark. The thing the worries me most is those nuclear weapons. It’s a whole new ballgame at war.’
‘Son, you don’t have to worry about this anymore. You’re out of the military. You’re home, where you belong.’
‘She’s right, bud. Your place is here.’
‘I’ve seen and learned a lot about the world during the war. I’ve been in Europe, Asia, the Pacific. The world I saw is not the world that was meant for us. That’s why I have decided that from as soon the war is behind us, I’m going to start travelling. I wanna know the real world. The world that was meant for us. I wanna know more about nature and the ecosystem. I wanna know more about mankind, technology and science. If I know more about these things, I think I can help out mankind to make the world a better place. We can all make the world a better place, one person at a time.’
‘And how do you think on reaching that?’ mom asked.
‘Hitting the books again and uh… there were talks about establishing an organization that has the purpose of creating world peace. They’re calling it the United Nations. If I can get in there, I can make one step in the right directions.’
‘And these travels, you planned?’
‘Mom, that might take a few years, but my mind is made up. I’m taking them but as you said, for now, I belong here. There were many times during the war, I just wanted to come home. Now I’m here and I’m staying here, for a while at least.’
Mom nodded and Harry smiled in approval. I grabbed their hands. It was good to feel them again and to be home. Boy, have I missed them. (The track Hand of Fate part 2 from the movie Signs starts playing here)
Later that day, I went to cemetery to visit dad and grandmother and Kate. First I went to see dad and grandmother. I never blamed my dad for not telling me about Kate nor did I blame her for not telling me. I loved them no matter what. But knowing the fact that I would never talk to them again or at least not for a long time hurt my feelings. OK, so I met my dad before the invasion, but I never thought it would be the last time and I haven’t spoken to my grandmother and Kate since I left for West Point. That hurt even more. When I walked up to her grave, I kept remembering the short time we were together. It were the most happiest moments of my life. If it wasn’t for this war, we probably still would’ve been together. I just kept looking at her grave.
‘I love you, Kate.’
That was something I almost never said to her in our time together. That was it. I didn’t know what else to say, but I knew I would come back to this place with Sam and that I would tell him everything about her and me, so that he would understand the big picture. I slowly walked away from her grave, going back home, thinking about what the effects on your life are when the world changes. Because in the end you never know when the world changes.

Nations united

January 11 1946
The general meeting of the United Nations has held his first meeting in London. The British prime minister Clement Attlee spoke to the assembled representatives of fifty-one countries with the words: ‘Our target is to create justice and safety’.

‘Iron Curtain’ divides Europe

March 5 1946
The British war leader sir Winston Churchill has found a new enemy – the threat of communism. In a speech during his tour throughout the United States he warned that ‘an iron curtain has fallen over Europe’. He believes that differences between capitalist and communist countries are incompatible and that the USSR is showing tendencies of expansion. He pleaded for a fellowship between the United States and the United Kingdom to face the aggression of the Soviet Union.

Nazi top convicted

October 16 1946
The trial against the war criminals in the German Nuremburg is over. A group of judges, representing the allies has come to a judgment. From the twenty-one Nazi leaders that were trialed, eleven were sentenced to the death and the others got heavy jail punishments. The biggest war criminals were however absent on the trial. Adolf Hitler and SS-commander Heinrich Himmler both killed themselves at the end of the war and the secretary of Hitler, Martin Bormann, is missing.

Diary of Anne Frank published

June 15 1947
‘Despite everything I still believe that peoples are good of nature’. These moving words come from the pages of diary, held during the war by the young Jewish girl Anne Frank. When the Nazis invaded Holland, the family Frank searched for sanctuary. Day by day, with constant fear to be discovered, Anne relieved her heart out by writing down in her diary. After two years the family got betrayed by Dutch squealers. They were arrested by the Gestapo (the German secret police) and send to concentration camps. Anne died of typhus in March 1945. Her father published the remarkable writings of his daughter. That way million of readers can form an idea of the nightmare of the holocaust.

Aftermath of the war

World War II caused to estimation fifty-five million casualties including many innocent civilians. Bombardments had destroyed giant areas in Europe and Southwest Asia. Not only military targets got hit, but also houses, schools, roads and railways lay in ruins. There was hunger and European and Southwest Asian roads were packed with fugitives. Soldiers who returned to the birth countries found their destroyed homes. Their families were often separated. And in still in the middle of all the darkness there was hope growing on a new world without tyranny.

Demobilization

After the Great War the soldiers were promised a ‘country of heroes size’, but the only thing that was waiting for them was unemployment. At the end of World War II the governments decided not to make that same mistake. It was however an expensive assignment to get the millions of men and women back into civilian life. A few countries were bankrupt, others had big debts to pay. In the United Kingdom every demobilized soldier of de state got 199 British ponds and a whole new set of clothes.

Prefab

From all allied countries the UK had to fought the greatest residence need. The new labor government came up with the plan to build four hundred thousand new houses a year, but couldn’t live it through. The fast assembling prefab-house was advancement measure. The idea was that the ‘prefab’-houses would last for about ten years, but because of the dragging residence need, they got inhabited much longer.

Rebuilding Europe

Bombardments often hit civilian targets and many European cities were destroyed. Public building, mills and transport system were badly damaged and there was an alarming shortage of food, fuel and water. Peoples were starving and had to look as good as possible for shelter. After the war there were more women than men in the German cities. In the streets of Berlin working women weren’t usual. For a small compensation, they helped in long lines cleaning up debris.

State of well-being

In 1945 the United States became one of richest and most powerful nations in the world. The country was damaged materialistically by the war, the factories continued to produce new goods and there was no rationing of food. The economy from after the wear took a head start and brought well-being to millions of peoples. The income of the farmers quadrupled itself and the paycheck of the industrial workers rose up with seventy percent. For Europeans who tried to recover their economy after the war, the US seemed like the country of abundance.

Miracle recovery

Immediately after the war the Germans concentrated to surviving only. But after ten years of international investments Germany became one of the very first European nations to recover from the war trauma’s. In contrary with the allies, Germany didn’t had to pay giant military debts. That’s why Germany could rebuild their factories and establish new companies.

Candy on vouchers

In the United Kingdom the rationing got even more strict after the war. In July 1946 they even vouched bread. This measure was supposed to help the population that was in Germany under the British occupation. It lasted until the fifties before peoples could enjoy of luxurious products like candy and chocolate unlimited.

Effects of the atom bomb

The world reacted shocked of the nuclear attacks on the Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Both cities got destroyed and the most part of the population got killed. Months later the survivors suffered from radiation sickness and developed cancers as a consequence of the radiation. After years more consequences appeared like birth defects. The final amount of casualties is estimated on about three hundred thousand. Uncountable fugitives, including young children, remained homeless, with no families to look after them.

Well, I enjoyed your ending. I liked your different take on his relationship with Kate and his son, exploring it from the angle that the boy gets to grow up and know his father. Well done! I can't wait to read what you write next (although I know you are probably exhausted after this story and want to take a break)! Again, your research was very thorough and well done. I'm playing with some ideas for a new story that I hope will be worked out soon. I also got a few other idea's not involving a Mac-story. Now I'm into gaming again since a very long time. And also work comes in between. Maybe within a few months. Now I indeed need a break because this was the hardest story I ever wrote. The others compared with this one were easy. But I'm glad I can let this one go now. You'll see when the next one is up.

I have to say thank you for the story you wrote. I am a World War II renenactor. I do living history to teach the public about the 1940's. I have to say the things you wrote were great. It was very accurate. I love the hole idea of Mac being in WWII.

Thanks, I'm kinda of self-taught now on the subject. I had great help from my encyclopedia of the 20th century and went into reading on Wiki. On a subject like that reading is unstoppable especially on Wiki, because you continue to click. It consumes you completely. But I'm glad it's over. The research was hard but necessary to keep the story coherent. The information on the battle ships were quite nauseating and also on Pearl Harbor. The chapters of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the concentration camps were very difficult to write. But it sure paid off in the end.
