I saw SNL last Saturday and they did another three sketches- all depicting MacGruber as a racist- so while initially trying to parody MacGyver and hyperbolize the elements of the show, they have now turned it into "irony," doing things MacGyver never would. It's funny to have the repeated scenario of Mac locked in a room while the clock ticks down, it's not funny to make him a vulgar, racist, heavy-handed moron.
But you know what? That's where American culture has gone. Sure there's always been some edginess, but shows like SNL have pushed the envelop so far it's a game of shock now. Every movie, show, stand up host, it's all so much off color adult humor there's almost no escaping it now. Granted, I am probably a somewhat racy person myself at times, but even I feel things are going south, and I'm 22, not 40, and saying this.
As for the impact on the MacGyver movie, yeah, I also suspect there is no taking MacGyver serious now, sadly MacGyver has been so scarce on the airwaves over the last half a decade or more that kids who missed MacGyver will say "Oh, this is like that funny MacGruber movie, only it's not funny."
I mean, I think there's enough of an audience people would show in droves if the trailer got enough marketing and it was a DANG good trailer, but we have all discussed before the lack of quality in 80's shows turned movies like Miami Vice. Hopefully this will be one of those miracles and there will still be a Mac movie, and it will be VERY well written and promoted.
