So, has anyone managed to figure out the exact brown leather coat that Mac wears? I know that in another discussion on this site, people had figured out that it was:
likely a G-2 possibly an Avirex (tartan lining?) Distressed leather
I figure the only way to get a coat that color would be to go vintage and find one from the 80's.... except that I haven't been able to find one thats exactly his. I've seen ones very, very close (except for the weather strip and the lining), but not exact.

Yes... but it's not exactly the same. The exact one used in the show had a different lining and stuff. I mean, its the same style and basically the same jacket, but I'm curious if anyone has figured out exactly the coat that they used in the show.

Honestly, I doubt RDA would know much about it. I'm sure the wardrobe person just handed him the jacket and he put it on. It's unlikely that they went out shopping for it together, or anything. You'd probably have better luck asking someone from the wardrobe department.

Unless it was one of his own jackets.
He said in an interview that the jacket he wore to his first reading for the job became the MacGyver jacket. And there have been other comments about how he wore either the same kind of clothing away from the set or wore his own clothing in the show - although I think that probably means he had a say in how he wanted MacGyver to dress.

I don't suppose he gave any details about it such as brand etc?
Nope, sorry, no brand details. Chances are they don't make the same brand anymore anyway. Where it was his personal jacket, he could have purchased it 20 years or more before we saw it on the show.
He did say Nike used to send a lot of shoes his way, but the props people would always attempt to color out the "swoosh." Can't have our hero endorsing one brand over another

Jacket really could be his own. I found a picture from rda sites gallerys other pictures where he wears it from 1983. I use the picture as my avatar now.
Great News! I know exactly what jacket was used in the early MacGyver episodes. There was a different one in the later episodes, and there was also a "stunt version" as well, in the early episodes with a white lining, instead of the tartan lining. I also have proof, as well, since I freeze framed the tag on the inside of his jacket on one of the episodes. Trust me, it's the real deal. I have purchased many jackets over the years from Scully to the Raider jacket that is currently online. Nothing comes close. I'll post some pictures of my collection. We're not supposed to sell or trade on these forums, but I plan to post the jacket on Ebay.
You bet! Sorry, I was trying to list the jacket, yesterday, but I just now got it posted on Ebay. Here it is.......drum roll please........the jacket is made by Chevignon. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...5#ht_518wt_1299 I have a video production company and I was able to blow up a freeze frame of the jacket when MacGyver took it off. I think it was in the episode where he was skiing and there was some microfilm put in his ski pole. Now, the label itself, wasn't quite legible, but if you look at the pattern of the label and compare it to Chevignon, there's no question. The jacket I have listed is a Chevignon jacket, but my label is slightly different. Chevignon has several different labels on that particular jacket. Notice that MacGyver's zipper is on the opposite side-like you would have to zip it up with your left hand. Also, notice the criss cross stitching on the wind flap. I have bought many Raider jackets over the years, and nothing comes close. I even bought the one from the link on this forum's store site. It is a very nice jacket, but it's not like the Chevignon jacket. It's more like the one MacGyver had in the later seasons, with the white lining. At some point they retired the Chevignon he wore. It's almost like they made a version as close as they could, which they did for the stunt jacket. Notice in the episode where MacGyver trips the bully in the parking lot when he tries to stomp on the jacket. The frames where it's pulled up from under him shows the jacket didn't have the tartan lining, but a white lining, and then the tartan lining again. They used the "double" so the Chevignon wouldn't get messed up. Notice the episode where MacGyver was held captive when the Phoenix Foundation is taken over. The stunt guy runs down the stairs exposing the "B" jacket or stunt jacket, with the white lining. My Chevignon jacket has the identical tartan lining from the earlier seasons. Now, Chevignon made many jackets with the zippered front pockets. Be careful, because there are some models that look like MacGyver's at first glance, but without the tartan lining, and perhaps without the dark brown elastic wrist and waist bands, etc. I hope this helps! One big mystery solved friends

Buttons and zippers placed on the opposite side has traditionally been the "feminine" way of placing them ~ that supposedly goes back to when "Ladies" had their hand-maidens/chamber maids to help dress them...
These days with so many of these types of jackets made to "unisex" sizes (which is actually the men's sizing - with the implied understanding that women shop a size smaller than they otherwise normally would..) you are likely to find the zipper on either side..
I know that I sometimes go to zip up a ("mens" sized) jacket and find the zipper on the "wrong" side.

@lexscape - Good looking out! Job well done, and a big thank you!!
@macgybl - Nice little piece of info on it returning 2012.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm stoked to go start tracking one down. Again, Thank you both for the info. I've been trying to piece that one together for a great deal of time now.

Hey Moscow-1! Strolling on eBay, I spotted this Avirex jacket. Thanks to lexcape we know that the real Mac jacket is a Chevignon, but this one comes pretty darn close. I can very well imagine a jacket like this having been used in some scenes, f.i. for stunt purposes. Right now the price is just under 10 dollars. Bidding ends in three days.

I see two minor structural differences between the jacket Traveller is linking to on eBay, and the jacket Lexscape is showing. They are different brands, of course; the former is an Avirex, the latter is a Chevignon.
The front slash pockets on the Avirex are perpendicular; the ones on the Chevignon are set at a slight angle. That's main difference #1.
The lining is difference #2: plaid on the Chevignon (probably flannel), off-white on the Avirex. My guess is that the Avirex lining is also a lightweight cotton flannel, but that's only a guess. There's another Avirex brown leather bomber on eBay that describes the lining as acetate, but that lining is a print, so the model isn't identical (although the cut of the jacket looks exactly the same as the other Avirex).
From what I can see, there may also a slight difference in the construction of the back sleeve, a slight difference in the collar proportions and the join to the front placket, and (possibly) a minor difference in the back easing pleats; but I'd need more detailed images to be sure of any of those.
Didn't Lexscape mention a 'stunt jacket' with a white or off-white lining, and identify some scenes where it was worn and he spotted the white flash of the different lining? I bet that was an Avirex. The only real difference is the angle of the front slash pockets; it makes sense that they'd get an Avirex jacket, or several, and distress them to exactly match the Chevignon.
