Tony Lee, the writer of the recently announced MacGyver comic book series, has posted an article on his blog explaining how the comic book came to be.
In his article he proudly boasts about being a huge MacGyver fan and adds that he has a MacGyver t-shirt along with the full series on DVD as well as a Phoenix Foundation MacGyver ID badge which he wore as part of a MacGyver costume he wore to a fancy dress party.
He also explains a bit more of the plot and goes to lengths to assure us this is not a MacGruber like approach, but a genuine attempt to bring MacGyver back.

Guess, I'm all for it, from what I read. I can agree when they say MacGyver does not need to be tied to a timezone. Than we immediately have an answer on how Mac would be in our time. I guess we can answer that already: cell phone, flatscreen, dvd, internet. He'd have the whole works.
Changing the mullet? I hope they don't change it to a crewcut. Maybe a sort of reversed mullet. Short in the back and long hair upfront...?

Why do you think he would have "The whole works" when he didn't have any interest in that sort of thing in the show?
He didn't have a big TV, he hardly ever watched TV.. so why would he have one now?

Flatscreens are also in all sizes. I can imagine his western collection on video has been replaced by a dvd collection. Alright, debatable. Maybe he likes the old video and it's quality out of nostalgia.
Internet: everybody has it and in the old days they didn't. And I'm sure Phoenix would have a very secured website.
Cell phone he'd probably took it to replace his old car phone and maybe he leaves his cell in the car. And the best thing about a cell phone on the contrairy with a portable phone is you can turn it off. So Jack can't annoy him.
But indeed to be absolutely sure about we'll have to wait for the comic.

I'm actually worried the more I hear about it. "Penknife"? It's a swiss army knife! Updating means changing his age I bet which means less likely to resemble RDA. Obviously he can't have the hairstyle from the 80s but RDA kept up on that so they could give him the hair from the 6th or 7th season and still be up to date in style. If they were smart they will connect it to the series and get us up to date on what MacGyver is up to. I fear they will try to reinvent the wheel

If it's like they've done with Superman etc, then they won't change the basic character, more just some of the material things around him to keep it current. OK, we might not see the mullet, but we'll likely see something akin to the first season haircut. He might have a cell phone, but as has been pointed out he'll not likely be texting 24/7 like a 14 yr old girl either, he'll keep it low-key which is consistent with the character we all know and love. I think all the trapping like tv, dvd player etc would be updated, but they won't make such a big deal out of it all.
I'm looking forward to it coming out and hope it leads to other projects in the futrue!

yeah I agree with your Kevin. I think they will keep MacGyver around the same age he was in the series and just update his surroundings.
This hasn't in anyway been billed as a reboot of any kind, simply an update, so that says to me that they will indeed handle it in the same way they do with the superheroes. The basic character stays the same, they just update the surroundings to match today's world.
I think the mullet would still work today, because long hair is in style again (if it ever really went out of style?)

Don't try to be too negative about this. I'm sure Lee David Zlotoff would make sure everything goes the way it's supposed to be.

I don't know about that. Lee David Zlotoff would care about his creation in the general sense. Not the legendary specific parts that RDA brought to the character.

That's what Tony will bring to the project. He's a long time fan and is quite familiar with this site and the information held here.
Note in one of his posts he mentioned that he wants his MacGyver to maintain the likeness to RDA. That sends a very good signal to me that he wants to maintain the RDA MacGyver. Also remember that he has the original MacGyverisms man on-board to create the MacGyverisms.
We have the shows creator, the original MacGyverims man, a desire to keep the RDA likeness of MacGyver, an childhood fan of MacGyver drawing and a life time fan who knows his way around this site and who has said he wants to keep the RDA likeness to MacGyver writing the story.

I agree with you.
While I can see Rocketeer's point about Mac not being heavily into stuff like TV and electronic gadgets, etc, we also know that his belongings weren't outdated. The stuff he owned in the series was appropriate for the time period of the series, so it would be safe to assume that the stuff he'd own in 2011 would be appropriate for 2011. And that means he'd have a flatscreen tv, a cell phone, an iPod, the internet, a microwave oven, etc. In fact, I don't think there's any way that somebody in Mac's line of work could NOT have a cell phone and the internet-- that would be completely unrealistic, and it would feel like they're trying to hard to make Mac seem like a relic of the past.

Just saw this interesting piece of news.
What I think of when I think "updated" MacGyverisms is Michael Westen... If they go that route, as far as the technology part goes, it'll be cool. And for the rest, I dearly hope they tie it with the series, keep all his personality as we know it, and make him look like RDA all the way. (And hopefully include Pete too, if that's not too much to ask!) But Rocky is right that you couldn't get much of a better team.

And imagine what fantastic "product placement" tie-ins they could have if they got Apple on board as a sponsoring advertiser...
Starting with Mac's iMac and MacBook computers, along with the ubiquitous (my "big word" for the day..) iPad, iPhone, and iPod devices - all would be Phoenix Foundation issue, of course..
