Part of the reason I've been gone so long is that I've kind of figured out what to do with this thing called life (a shameless lyric grab from Prince), and that's filmmaking.

Me and some of my associates (fancy term for "buddies") decided that it's about time we pay respect to our favorite TV series, the one we grew up on, MacGyver.

Our plan is to make a full-length episode, possibly more if it's not too burdensome (and it probably will be). We're working on the preliminary script phase, getting story ideas and action sequences together. And we're looking at MacGyver episode structures, like "quest-adventure" episodes (Mask of the Wolf, Eye of Osiris), contained thrillers (Pilot, Phoenix Under Fire), or even MacGyver in a foreign land.

Now I just want to see what you all think. Ideas for scenes, plots, McGuffins (for you Hitchcock fans), etc. And I'd also like to see what your take is on casting, because as it stands we're pretty set on casting somebody as MacGyver. They don't look like Richard Dean Anderson, but the sense of humor and the humanity of the character will be intact. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well the first thing that springs to mind is Copyright issues.

Is this something you're just doing for fun and maybe to post on Youtube? or is there a more professional stance to this?

We'd be posting it to Youtube, but we'd try to make it as professional as possible. Basically, it's an exercise in filmmaking, but it's just something we did as kids, and we want to do it really well now.

Fan films are made all the time, and usually copyright isn't an issue. Look at Star Trek: Of Gods and Men and Browncoats Redemption, amongst many other less famous examples. Browncoats Redemption raised over 200K for charity. If you want to do something like that, there are a lot of hoops to jump through. But a just for fun film? Not an issue. Sure, YouTube MIGHT get snooty and pull it, but so what? You just make up a new username and move on. But something like this? Not likely to alert anyone's radar.

If you're surfing YouTube for MacGyver offerings, be sure to check out Cyril's trailers and vids, which are wonderful. His YT ID is MacPhoenix82.

This sounds like a fun idea. I remember a group of friends made a film called "Indiana Jones: The Adaptation" a long time ago when they were just kids. It was a scene for scene remake of Raiders of The Lost Ark and was pretty amazing for their age and resources.

I'll be looking forward to see how it turns out. Have fun!

I am a small time filmmaker. I've always thought about making a MacGyver Fan Film. duct.gif sak.gif

Back in high school my best friend Brian and I skipped school one day, went to downtown Denver and filmed a few scenes for a homemade MacGyver episode that in the end never got made. The idea was that I would star as MacGyver and my best friend would play the role of Jack. My friend was/is black and we were going to give him the nickname BlackJack in our episode.

The scenes we filmed were as follows:

MacGyver running from the bad guys (there were no actual bad guys chasing me, they would have been filmed later and intercut with footage of me)

MacGyver running into the Phoenix Foundation building to escape the bad guys.

MacGyver walking up to and driving off in his Jeep.

MacGyver and BlackJack riding up in the Phoenix Foundation elevator. We snuck our camera into an actual office building, got on an elevator, hit the button for the top floor and filmed the lighted floor numbers as they changed. We had to hide the camera a couple of times when people who actually worked in the building got on and off the elevator.

On the way home Brian recorded this flatbed tractor trailer hauling something that was covered by a large tarp, which reminded me of the E.M.P. Generator used in "Easy Target". He was even able to film it in the passenger side-view mirror as we passed it. A cool camera angle, I thought.

I was able to find a battery operated rubber cobra snake, coiled up, ready to strike, which I bought after seeing the episode "Murderer's Sky". I figured since the head moves back and forth it would totally resemble the clip from that episode.

I still have the cobra and the VHS tape with those few scenes.

* On a side note, I was wearing my "Mac's Other Black Leather Jacket".

I forgot to mention that, with the help of my grandparents, I filmed a scene of me as MacGyver eating an ice cream cone with a clock in the background. In my home town of Loveland, CO (approximately 60 miles north of Denver) there is a freestanding clock, similar to the one seen in the opening credits of the first two seasons, outside of a barber shop. I took the video camera up to Loveland, picked up my grandparents, stopped at a local ice cream shop, purchased an ice cream cone and drove a few blocks to the clock. I set two legs of the tripod on the edge of a planter/parking barrier and had grandpa hold the third leg (there wasn't enough room for all three legs on the planter), pressed record, got into position and proceeded to eat the ice cream cone. There was no other way to set up the camera at the same height as me other than to do it the way I did. It must have looked pretty funny to people walking by, but I was in my film maker mode, so I didn't notice at the time.

At one point the barber came out of his shop to see what we were doing and grandma explained everything. smile.gif

I'd love to see those scenes. I've got some scenes I filmed on VHS years ago with some friends. I really need to transfer them to DVD before it's too late.

I have started to make one homemade small storyboard MacGyver script. But I was too busy and lazy to make that, so then forgot it. I had to invent the quotes, but it was impossible. But someday I would continue that work.
