As Deluxe Tinker, it may be used in "Jack of Lies ". In this episode, MacGyver used a 4 layer knife with Phillips screwdriver and no fish (Fisherman model) or classic car (Grand Prix model) mark. So I think that MacGyver may use a Deluxe Tinker or Fieldmaster model. And in "For Love or Money" MacGyver used a 4 layer knife with corkscrew, it may be a Angler, Explorer, Huntsman, or Mountaineer model.
In "The Stringer" MacGyver and SAM used a knife, it is 5 layer with large blade, tweezers, and saw to cut a flare gun shell. I doubt it is a Hunter Knife by Buffaloe. I have never heard such a brand in Japan.
QUOTE
BUT, after showing it to my SAK collector forum, everyone agreed that the backsprings do not lay the way Wenger or Victorinox springs do, and also that the position of the metal saw blade was off in terms of what layer it should have been folded out of. Finally, the shape of the blade itself is a dead giveaway that it was not Vic or Wenger. I suspected it was a different brand, so if anyone could find out about that it would be fantastic.
Yes, so I think the knife may be such a swiss style army knife as this ebay auction item.
It is hard to think MacGyver uses such a non-brand knife. But several years ago, I bought a MacGyver 100th episode knife, like this Vintage-Multi-Purpose-Knife (without toothpick, tweezers) in ebay auction.
Nice work!!!!! That's EXACTLY what it is! An early Chinese knockoff. Who would have thought? And you're right on all those counts, I originally thought it had to be a Fieldmaster in Jack of Lies, but the Deluxe Tinker fits the 4 layer/phillips criteria. Any still shots from the runway scene where he cuts them loose with it? Oh, by the way- we are faced with a serious decision to make, MOL. MacGyver, THE MacGyver, after years of carrying genuine Swiss Army Knives, used a Chinese knockoff in the final episode. Normally, I keep Wiki updated with my latest tidbits on Mac's knife, but this is serious. Do we really want to fuel what is already a booming industry of inferior knife sales? Or do we provide 100% fact and let the reader judge? By the way, the cost of production for the Chinese Army Knives is $.12 a peice. Yes, as in twelve cents each.

I'd like to know what on earth possessed them to use one of "those" knives.
Was it somethign to do with the Chinese angle of the episode?
Using cheap Chinese products which where probably made in the very kind of sweat factory we see the main characters disgusted by in the episode, seems a touch hypocritical to me.

Oh man, I could be really terrible and say this was the first sign MacGyver was going to be a dead beat dad - he gave him a cheapo that was $4 instead of a real SAK. But we know he wasn't so that's really not that funny...

Last night I watched "The Stringer" episode, it is really that MacGyver cut a cord after MacGyver gave a knife to SAM. But it is very difficult to think MacGyver had 2 knives or both MacGyver and SAM had each knife. In this situation it is natural to think that MacGyver gave SAM a knife, then SAM returned the knife to MacGyver to cut a cord, soon MacGyver gave it to SAM again . So the knife used in "The Stringer" is only one knife, I think.
Well... I think the reason why a Chinese knockoff was used in the final episode (if MacGyver exactly used a Chinese knockoff) :
On the occasion of MacGyver's 100th episode, "MacGyver 100th Episode" knife was made from a Chinese knockoff without toothpick & tweezers. Final episode is very memorial, so an original Chinese knockoff is used instead of "MacGyver 100th Episode" knife. Or to reduce overhead?
In addition, Worker model in my mysterious list perhaps means now retired Victorinox Recruit Economy Knife. The Victorinox Recruit Economy Swiss Army knife is a simpler version of the popular Recruit pocket knife-- it has the same blades, but no toothpick or tweezers.

oh man.. yeah you could lose your SAK carrying privileges for saying things like that

Sorry, I may make mistakes, I don't know when each SAK model was manufactured for the first time.
By the way, when SAM uses a knife, it seems there is no Toothpick or Tweezers in left side hole. MacGyver may lose it.
I think the knife used in "LOST TREASURE OF ATLANTIS" is a Hiker or Super Tinker model, 3 layer with Phillips Head Screwdriver.
Honestly, 1985-present is about the same for the 84mm and 91mm which is what MacGyver used. The only ones that have come and gone are the Standard and Weekender. All the cyber tools are recent, obviously. This site is pretty helpful:
Many companies have put their name on the Chinese multiblades, I wonder if Buffalo was one such company. It said in that listing though that it was German. Weird.

I have some questions. There is not Deluxe Tinker, and Tinker size is 84mm and so on.
As for Buffalo, I think you are right. I don't know about Chinese knife. I only watched it in ebay auction. Is it different from Royal Crest Camper 16-Function Knife?
And is it impossible to find out which bland knife used in "The Stringer"?
I'm very glad to see you, because almost every MacGyver knife can be identified. I have studied about it for about 10 years. But I have not found out the knife used in "The Stringer". Thanks MacDriver and MOL!!!

Yeah, it is different, that knife has a large-tooth wood saw instead of a metal saw. A metal saw has fine teeth on it, like what Mac was using. I am very familiar with the Chinese knockoffs, that's why it was surprising to see that on the older ones that saw blade was present. But blade for blade, it is the exact same format save for that one blade. There has to be someone from the old cast/crew we could contact about it, or someone at Victorinox. And see, I was reluctant to add it to MacGyver's wikipedia for this reason: I tipped off Vic that Zlotoff was talking about having Mac use a Leatherman. So, Victorinox is compelled to keep the Mac/Victorinox affiliation intact. BUT, it might damage that relationship a little if Vic finds out Mac was in bed with the Chinese at the end. Hopefully I am reading way too into that, and there is no problem with that.

Exactly! I have looked for a Swiss Style Army knife like used in "The Stringer" for a long time. But I could get 3 type knives in ebay auction. 1st is no mark, 2nd has a cross in circle, 3rd has a shield mark. Each knife is written "stainless china" on large blade. All Swiss Style Army knives now I can find out have not a metal saw but a wood saw. Where can we get the Chinese knockoffs? And there are other Chinese stories like "The Wish Child", "Murderer's Sky", and "Children of Light", but Chinese knife is not used.
As MacGyver Wiki, I want you to add about a 111mm knife too.
In Japan, MacGyver DVDs are sold from 1 to 5 season yet. So I have examined a MacGyve knife used in these 5 seasons.

Makato, you are amazing! I am positive that is what was used. You are THE MAN!!!! I will add all of the info about the anniversary knife and the 111mm to wikipedia after midterms this week Thank you so much for all the research you've done, I have no idea how you found it all, and so fast! Although I hear you get better internet in Japan than we do here

did MacGyver ever use a swiss champ
MacGyver did not use a Swiss Champ model, but in "Young MacGyver" it seems that Clay MacGyver uses a Swiss Champ or Champion Plus model.
By the way, MacDriver, can you watch "LOST TREASURE OF ATLANTIS" ? I want to listen to your opinion, of course, about a knife used by MacGyver. It seems a Super Tinker or Hiker model.
As MacGyver 100th Episode Knife, I saw it in ebay auction by chance in 2001 for the first time. It seemed that it is a product for MacGyver staff and crew.

Below is a description of MacGyver 100th Episode knife on ebay auction from my saved data.

MacGyver RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON KNIFE Description: MacGyver 100th Episode Swiss Army Knife This is a unique piece of memoribilia, given to cast and crew on the TV show "MacGyver." It's a red swiss army style knife with lots of useful features, that says "MacGyver 100TH EPISODE" comes with box that says "BARLOW" on it. My 100th SAK
I examined "BARLOW". The Panther Pocketknife is very similar to MacGyver 100th Episode Swiss Army Knife. Panther Pocketknife MacGyver 100th Episode Swiss Army Knife might be made from BARLOW Panther Pocketknife with Logo. So, I think the knife used in "The Stringer" may be not a Hunter knife -by Buffaloe but a Panther Pocketknife by Barlow. But Panther Pocketknife by Barlow has no toothpick or tweezers, and has not a metal saw but a wood saw. The knife is still cloaked in mystery.
Wow, I hadn't ever thought to add up just the knife names. If you bought all of them at retail it would be hundreds of dollars. I think Mac might've had a problem more serious than Lisa Woodman's addiction

20 knives !? Too many!!! I read other topic. Did MacGyver collect SAKs? MacGyver seems to collect SAKs. But there is a trend what SAKs are used in each season.

In "Eagles" it seems MacGyver uses a Climber model. Darin Cooper seems to use 3 layer model, and Susan Cooper seems to return MacGyver a knife with Corkscrew.

As well as "THREE FOR THE ROAD", MacGyver used 2 knives in the same scene in "THE BATTLE OF TOMMY GIORDANO". At first MacGyver used a Standard model (it has no toothpick, tweezer or key ring) to open a wall socket, next MacGyver used a 2 layer knife with tweezers to pick the door, then MacGyver used a Standard model again to connect a phone cable in other room. It is very strange.

Nice catch! And About Lost Treasure, I am a little busy until Thanksgiving, I'll try to watch all the ones I can when I get home to faster internet. Here at this school video takes 22-3 hours to stream a 1 hour video with all the stalling to load, I guess they think college students should have better things to do than watch MacGyver reruns
