Every week I will be posting a new topic titled "Character Discussion". In this we will discuss a character, what we liked about them, what we didn't like, etc. Dexter Fillmore MacGyver's favorite alias. He used this computer-geek identity to help bring down a money launderer, to stop a plot to steal top-secret Phoenix equipment, and to shut down a counterfeit baseball memorabilia operation. |

I love Dexter! He's fabulous for comic relief! Ack! I also see him as RDA's alter-ego--the more shy, sweet, awkward, and self-conscious but intelligent side to him. I often wonder if he assumed this personality when he wore glasses and before he had contacts and Lasik surgery on his eyes. I could definitely see him doing that as a joke to have some fun with his glasses and pretend to be "nerdy." |

I love Dexter. It's kewl to see RDA flex out of his "acting" comfort zone. Maybe it isn't too much of a stretch. Anybody seen pictures of him at age 15-17? |

Naaah Those aren't too bad. I'm thinking of the one where he'd come back from his bike trip looking like a scruffy nerf herding geek. |

I love Dexter! I think MacGyver must have learned a few things in his long life of studying people... and one of the (many) things he learned and put to good use was the knowledge that people will consistently underestimate you if they think they know all there is to know about you. 'Dexter' shows me a side of MacGyver that reveals his true intelligence, wit, and wisdom concerning people. I wish that MacGyver had been giving more chances to 'become' a different person in the course of the TV show. Working as an agent for the DXS, State Department, and the Phoenix Foundation, he must have had quite a repertoire of disguises and personalities he could use. Kinda like Simon Templar... only MacGyver ain't no Saint! |

I thought Dexter was good for a laugh, but never really thought much else about him. Maybe the subtleties of the character went way over my head.. probably still do. But he gets a good from me anyway. The thing I don't like is they used him in the very next episode again which I think was too much of an over kill.
Maybe MacGyver was the disguise. |

I agree. They could have 'spread him out' a little better...
omg... Rock, you're evil just to suggest that! lol! |

you holding out on us Nymphy? |

I like that observation, Loth! Dexter was one of my favorite 'characters.' What I really enjoy most about Mac as Dexter is the reactions of the bad guys to him. You can almost hear them thinking, "Is this guy for real???" and of course...he's not...totally. It's just enough of a deception to put them off guard. |
Posted by: MacGyver 19 May 2008 - 05:07 AM |
Dexter is funny. I like that. |
Posted by: mser 19 May 2008 - 07:21 AM |
I like Dexter a lot. I'd have liked to see him a little more, but not too much. Don't want to get tired of him. As far as other aliases for Mac... maybe 1 more. Wouldn't want any more than that. I'd start thinking too much about which character he was and it would take away from the point of the episode. Call me simple-minded... And after reading some of these comments, I begun to wonder if some of the Dexter's in real life are disguises for people who are really tough and self-confident... |

Noooo. Who would ever thought this ever looked like this Okay, it was an akward phase. |

Oh, those glasses! Total nerd. Wonder if was the chick magnet way back then as he was as MacGyver? Dexter Fillmore was my favorite MacGyver alter-ego. RDA did him SO well... yeah, he had to be a nerd in another life. I agree too that they used Dexter too soon. The next year, maybe would have ben good. I LOVE that pic, Nymphy. That face, the expression; priceless! I can see why you use it for your avatar... |
Posted by: MacGyverOnline 19 May 2008 - 12:52 PM
OMG! At least it shows his casual attitude towards his looks seem to have always been there. |
Posted by: ScreamingBansheila 20 May 2008 - 07:01 AM |
Dexter is one of my favorite characters! Even if he is the alter ego of Mac. I would have loved to see more of him! |
Posted by: Liz1976 3 June 2008 - 04:05 PM |
Dexter is great! Seeing Mac as nerd suggests maybe Mac is more insecure that we might think. Even beautiful people have insecurities. Mac and Dexter may have more in common than people realize. We all have nerdiness potential. |

I voted poor. |
Posted by: MacsChick 20 August 2008 - 05:50 PM |
Care to explain why? I'm just curious... |
Posted by: khelben1979 21 August 2008 - 12:03 AM |
It felt like bad acting, although I understand that one is supposed to see a bit humoristic on the character, I guess. Didn't like the character, that's all. |
Posted by: kiwijem 21 August 2008 - 02:46 AM |
I voted "excellent" cause Dexter was one of my favourite characters!!! I actually sometimes watch episodes JUST because I know he's in them LOL Love the way he says "quit it" most of all Heh heh heh |

Dexter was awesome. DUDE!!! He was so good especially in "Jenny's Chance." I think they needed more Dexter. |
Posted by: macsgirl1 5 May 2009 - 08:59 PM |
Glasses or not he's still sorry Maybe Dexter was his way of getting intouch with his former self. Either way I think Dexter was cool and good for a laugh now and then. I guess maybe I'm sticking up for Dexter and RDA because I too wear glasses, bi focals to be exact. |

Dexter! Yes! Terrific RDA-creation. Yesterday I watched 'There but for the Grace' , with Grazer, another nice undercover RDA-creation, and saw something funny. When at night Mac/Grazer is looking for the guy who killed father Jim, he passes two hobos that suddenly looked familiar to me. They are the same as the Dexter's cellmates in 'Under Cover'. And as 'Grazer' walks past them, the guy with the mustache is saying something to his friend like: 'Look, that's the same guy we met in jail.' At least that's what I imagine he says. Nice little director's joke – I think. |

I just re-watched Deep Cover. The whole scene with Dexter in the cell was hilarious. XD I thought Dexter was a well acted character. RDA was very good because I had to remind myself it's supposed to be Mac in disguise! XD I love this line: It's creepy in here! |

I love Dexter!!! I confess to watching the episodes just because I know he's in them too. Should have had more Dexter episodes... |
Posted by: Mela_007 17 February 2013 - 12:56 PM |
I notice a little bit of Dexter creeping out in Mac from time to time when he's not trying to be Dexter. Between the facial expressions combined with the tone of voice, Dexter shows himself now and then otherwise. The first place I noticed it was in "Faith, Hope, and Charity". When Mac and the Lacey sisters are tied up in the cellar and he is asking them if there isn't something more they want to tell him about Leo or the will. Right now I cannot think of the other place that I particularly noticed it, but it's fun to see Dexter creep into Mac's normal persona. It makes me smile because I think of Dexter then too. |

I like Dexter. I think he is a well acted character. I think Dexter is the inner nerd of MacGyver. There should have been more Dexter episodes. An "Excellent" character. |

I love Mac's alter-ego. I agree with having him in other eps. Besides heaven knows there is a bit of Dexter in each of us. |
Posted by: AussieMacFan 15 March 2013 - 12:19 AM |
Possible nit-pick, in Deep Cover, we see the shot of Dexter in the newspaper, is his last name spelt with one or two L's? |
Posted by: KiwiTek 15 March 2013 - 12:22 AM |
Good question. I thought 2, but you could argue that because this is the only time we ever see it written, they way must be the correct way. |
Posted by: AussieMacFan 15 March 2013 - 12:40 AM |
That's what I thought, it's been annoying me since I first saw the episode. Awesome episode! |
Posted by: AussieMacFan 4 April 2013 - 11:26 PM
I rewatched Faith, Hope & Charity, that was very Dexter worthy. Mainly the part when he asks why it's ripped in half. |
Posted by: YopeGyver 5 April 2013 - 08:43 AM
Oh man, where'd you ever find that pic? |
Posted by: AussieMacFan 7 April 2013 - 01:18 AM |
That's such a cute pic... |
Posted by: YopeGyver 7 April 2013 - 06:07 AM
Lol, if I didn't share a room with my sister, I'd probably have some of these photos on like one of those bulletin board type thingys. |
Posted by: AussieMacFan 8 April 2013 - 09:58 PM |
That's a really good idea. I'm gonna do that now. I have three boards that aren't really being used for anything. |

Mac's hidden personality brought out. It was a change of pace to See Mac become someone else. |

Posted by: cmbj67 11 September 2014 - 10:48 AM |
I voted poor, I think he's a character that could be avoided. He's supposed to be hilarious, but he doesn't make me laugh. |
Posted by: RadiantRose 24 September 2016 - 05:24 AM
That's an interesting question. 'Cos during the teen years, most "chicks" have the worry that (a) their friends will mock them for their taste in teen crushes and, worse, (b) that the object of their desire will also reject them. As chicks grow into swans or other birds or whatever the metaphor is, it usually gets easier to say, "Oh *** it, this is me, this is what I like, frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn what other people think". |
Posted by: RadiantRose 24 September 2016 - 05:26 AM
We could explain that one away as the newspaper people being bad at spelling. It would be a definite nitpick if Dexter had 2 different ID documents with the 2 different spellings. |
