Showrunner and Exec Producer Stephen Downing said due to many fan mail letters they decided not to pursue or create a love interest with Nikki.

I think they should have still kept her as a re-occurring character, she was more like a sister but a more mature and less annoying version of Penny. She was an equal to Mac and a co-worker and at times a needed foil

It was a missed opportunity that would have been interesting to see it continue

Agreed. Their dynamic is excellent. She would have been good in a lot of situations. Also to keep in perspective how unusual MacGyver himself is.

Some of the outdoor/travel/treasure episodes could have used her really well, in a GX1 way.

If I have something that bothers me is that the buildup in Fire and Ice is a little soapy and also a few moments in The Negotiator where her character doesn't have much depth and MacGyver is dismissive to her.

Yeah, too bad they couldn't get past the 80s things here.

I think the best use they her was in "The Widowmaker." With his close friends not able to get through to him, her being her usual self ended up making a lot more headway than they did (even if she ended up interrupted by Murdoc, as you do).

I never used to understand why people disliked her because I watched the series all out of order on reruns, so from my point of view she was just another recurring character who popped up from time to time, like Jack or Penny or the Coltons. I understood it a lot better when I rewatched the whole series in order more recently and oh yeah, she really does kind of come out of nowhere and there's a whole phase there where they're really trying to make her a co-lead. I still think she ads something to the show, though - it's nice to have somebody who isn't enamored with MacGyver but isn't a bad guy and is still part of his friend circle, more or less.

It's not that people didn't like Nikki. Female fans didn't want to see Macgyver with a female love interest, they wanted him for themselves.

Agree that she was great for the show, and also agree that there were female fans who didn't want to see any woman get him
