I actually kind of liked this episode.

I'll get the big negative out of the way first:
Bozer. I simply don't like this character, and in a way, he's worse now. Before, his stupidity was relegated to a quick scene at the beginning of each episode, and then he disappeared. Now, though, his stupidity is throughout the entire episode. Why did anyone think this was a good idea?

On the positive side:
Mac seemed more like Mac in this episode. We saw his caring side, we saw his appreciation for science, and HE was the one saving Jack, not the other way around.
Speaking of Jack-- he didn't take his gun out even once. Progress!
Also, I'd been saying for a while now that it would be nice to have a random adventure, rather than an assignment, and we finally got it with this episode. (now, if only they had been driving Mac's Jeep, rather than that silly minivan, this could have been even better.)
And mostly, I appreciated the fact that this episode moved at a slightly slower pace than many previous episodes, allowing for more character moments and also making it easier to follow everything that was happening. The slower pace made it feel a bit more like the original series.

In a way, it's frustrating. I feel like they keep getting elements of this show right, but they still feel the need to cram in too many sidekicks, and Bozer's stupidity, etc. If they could just trim the cast down a bit, and stop with the excessive goofy moments, this reboot could work.

I think Miasma's review is spot on. I can only add that it's about time we got some greenery and associated sets that were infinitely more refreshing than the (up to this point) flat light cityscape/office sets. Loved the way the daughter simply clammed up in the treehouse instead of giving some lines that might have been well beyond her years in a situation as such.
Bozer is turning out to be the gum on the shoe character that the harder you try to scrape it off, the more entrenched he becomes. Not crazy about Mac siding/sympathy with the drug dealer dad no matter how hard his times were or how desperate he was to make some cabbage. What's wrong with toughing it in 2 (labour type) jobs? Anybody knows it's a (long term) no-win situation in dealing with these (drugs) types and especially dubious when raising a young, impressionable daughter on the side.

Yep. I forgot to mention that. It was definitely nice to see Mac out in a more wooded environment.

True. And overall, I thought she was quite a good actress.

I felt this episode was a bit irresponsible. Evading a cop, and messing up a rental car. Messing up a rental car has FINANCIAL consequences.....

Also, I had a personal bias on the actor who played the Science teacher. The actor played in a Law and Order SVU episode where the character had a "record" but the NSA kept hiding the record cuz the character was good with electronics. It was a weird episode, I never forgot it.

Ok, I LOVED the "TV Antenna" made from flutes and clarinets! Did anyone notice?

Bozer was POINTLESS in this episode.

And..... WHAT MIASMA said, spot on!

I'm starting to see why they used a 20 year old to play MacGyver and not someone RDA's age. This way, they can have romantic interests without getting the ire of female fans, like what happened to RDA. Female fans won't take a 20 year old seriously, but a 30 year old..... Well, I was never one of the RDA worshippers, I just liked the show.

In the original series, Jack Dalton acted as an irritant, a "loveable clown" who went to high school with Mac (10-12th), and as a result, understood him in a way his other friends did not.

Since the character of Jack Dalton was reworked in the new version, do you think that some of the original Jack's traits are being moved to Bozer, and perhaps enhanced (e.g. an even longer history with Mac, and instead of occasional roommates, constant roommates)?

But they were evading the cops in order to protect the kid. Remember, they were specifically told that the cops couldn't get involved.

Well, Jack was told he'd have to pay for it, so I think the show was as upfront about that as they could be.
(Though, personally, I don't see why Mac wasn't held accountable, too, since he was actually the one dismantling the car.)

The Prodigal - breaks a federal witness out of protective custody and continues to help him evade police because the witness wanted to see his mother before she died - nearly got them both killed.

So we can't in all fairness hold that against this episode.

And "Rush To Judgment" had Mac breaking the law by personally visiting a crime scene to investigate a jury duty case (something every U.S. juror is specifically told NOT to do.)

In the original show, MacGyver broke the law or compromised evidence quite often - I just never realized it until starting my rewatch and listening to the Phoenix Foundation Podcast.

Overall, I liked this episode. There are still quite a few things I could complain about. But comparing it to the first few episodes, it has improved so much!

The change in scenery was very refreshing and we finally got kind of a "non-mission-episode" with the team stumbling into a plot where someone needed help. I know it's "Team MacGyver" now, but I think the episode would have been better if it had been MacGyver & Jack alone (wasn't the hashtag #MacandJack what they've been promoting endlessly before the premiere of the pilot?). Nothing against Sandrine, but it sure didn't hurt that Thornton didn't show up until the very end. It was also a good decision to split them up in twos and MacGyver bringing Valerie to the "lab" alone.

Yes, the reboot is set up as a team, but I think the show would profit a lot if it goes more the route that "Stargate SG-1" did with Season 2. There was always a reason why the team got split on a mission or someone was hurt and had to stay behind. I hated that at first (mainly because it was mostly RDA staying behind *lol*), but scenes with only one or two main characters let the actors shine and really helps with character development.

With the whole team involved, it still seems a bit rushed because they have to cram in so much; e.g. the "Bromance"-Scenes about MacGyver's past. If it had been MacGyver and Jack alone, involving scenes like that would be much easier.

Yes, Mac & Bozo's bromance is just a bit too thick and saucy for my liking. For example remembering the exact place where they met in high school. blink.gif Guys don't remember that kinda detail .... maybe it's a new trendy thing though. laugh.gif

I enjoyed it. I felt the episode wasn't the best but I understand why it had to be done. As an episode I was wondering why they all went there is beyond me but overall the episode is good. To much Bowzer for my tastes. But hopefully the mid season finale has less Bowzer.

DUH! I think you hit it!

They transferred the Dalton stuff to Bozer, but it's JUST NOT WORKING!!!!!

Also, Jack Dalton made an appearance once a season starting with Season 2 I think..... That was enough. Enough that we liked the character. (And the actor Bruce McGill has done well since! )

Okay, I'll admit it, I enjoyed this one a bit. This would have been a great one time Bozer episode, due to it's back story.

I feel like they're forcing us to have accept Bozer in every episode. I love Riley, I really do. But, Bozer, Jack and Riley don't need to be in EVERY SINGLE EPISODE!

How do they expect us to connect to Mac as a character? The original MacGyver was easy to connect with because it was HIS life we followed.

I agree that the original Jack Dalton got transferred to Bozer... which is fine, but dear god... enough already!

Mike was the original MacGyver's best friend, and we only saw her in two episodes. We briefly saw her in the beginning of Widowmaker, and we could feel the impact of her death through out the rest of the episode and knew that this was a very important person in Mac's life. Even though Pete got second billing in the credits, we didn't see him all the time and he wasn't in every episode. We also knew that Pete was just as important to Mac.

It doesn't take much... but it does take some depth and insight into character development.

But all in all, I did love the throw back to Ugly Duckling and Live & Learn. The classroom scene was well done, I think. Great nervous energy on Lucas' part. The story of Mac being bullied in school was a nice piece of backstory, especially since bullying is still a bit thing in schools these days, so that is something people can relate to.

Nice job on this one.

I feel like there needs to be a middle ground. For example, the original series suffered a bit from not showing Mike enough. She was supposed to be his best friend, and it would have been great to see her in several episodes, but we saw her only twice (and she was played by a different actress, and had a very different personality the second time.) That's not really enough to make us care a whole lot about her.
On the other hand, as you said, this show force-feeds the Mac/Bozer friendship. It's too much. Somewhere in the middle would be ideal. Also, I feel like the Mac/Bozer friendship in this series is a prime example of them TELLING something rather than SHOWING something. They keep telling us that they're great friends, but I don't really see anything in their personalities or interactions that really convinces me of it.

In particular, it was nice that he was bullied for being named "Angus." I remember seeing comments on this site about how Mac in this reboot just loves being called Angus, and although I never had that impression, it was nice to get confirmation in this episode that he probably did NOT love being called Angus.

Yes, and I think it's a problem they created by rebooting the unaired pilot while enhancing the team aspect.

There was someone attached for playing Mac's friend. We never saw him in the trailer for the unaired pilot, though and I don't remember if Colaizzo had him written as his roomate, too. If I remember correctly, he was the best friend (or mabye boyfriend?) of Addison Timlin's character that played the hacker.

They probably made a wise decision by keeping George Eads who had the best chemistry with Lucas. But one could argue about the transformation from Lincoln into Jack, because I don't think the way they did it was the best idea. They transferred some of this wacky-character persona of conspiracy-nut Lincoln onto Jack Dalton while heavily promoting the "Mac-and-Jack"-bromance and Jack being his best buddy.

Adding Bozer as Mac's roommate is one thing (personally, I wouldn't have done it. The whole having-a-roommate-as-cover-story is kinda old). But making him explicitly the so-called "funny comic-relief black guy" who's his roomate AND his best friend from childhood... now we have 2 loud funny-relief-guys being advertized as his best friend. That's just too much. It would be different if this was a 90-minutes-comedy-movie. But this being a TV-Show of 42 minutes that they advertize as a Drama, it just takes too much time that was better spent on MacGyver himself.

I rewatched this episode last week and was confused a bit.

Mac says to Valerie that he and Bozer built the Treehouse after his mom died (she died when he was 5 according to Episode 2).

Bozer tells Jack and Riley on the tour that he met Mac in 5th grade.

What age are you in 5th grade in the US? (the Swiss school system is different)

According to Google, 5th grade in the US is 10-11 year olds.

I'm reading this with a smile on my face right now. Now that the comments here are less negative, I think this episode was the one I liked the least so far despite we were more in Mac-territory then before. It was a bit too much Ugly Duckling for my taste, which is also one of my least favorites of season 1. I did like the nod to The Enemy Within with Mac on the car and Live and Learn with Mac teaching. The kidnapping thing was alright but not great. I think for the first time we had to deal with bad guys who weren't so bad as the ones we've met so far. Interestingly though, in the original show it was the other way around. To me the first real bad guy we met was Kurt Neilson in Nightmares.

Yes, this episode was the closest we got to a random adventure so far as well and I can agree with some saying this should've been Mac and Jack alone. Even this episode should've been Mac alone, arriving in the jeep with his voice-over explaining why he's back home, just like in Hell Week for example. If it was a random team adventure: they should've done something like, they're going on a fishing trip, get seperated by hunters with a nod to The Endangered or something and Mac and Jack have to find Riley and Bozer. That would've worked. This episode did indeed felt a bit crammed up and yes for the first time I was annoyed by Bozer as well. That phone call... really? That would've been funny if it was done by Billy Colton played by Cuba Gooding Jr. But this... nah, that was too much: 'I'm supposed to be funny, well I'll be funny.' And it wasn't besides Mac and Jack are supposed to be best friends. I don't care how much older Jack is. Maybe we can see that as the Mac-Pete friendship we all know and love if it comes to age difference.

Also the idea of Mac being bullied in school was something I couldn't imagine. Mainly because I've been there. To me Mac's the popular guy and a straight-A student. Everybody in class would look up to him. Mac would just own the class.

No, this was the least interesting episode so far. Too bad. Brian Durkin wrote such a strong episode with Wrench or should I say: The Ghost. Then again, some of the best writers of the original show had their misses as well.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

Here's the blog post by Rhett Allain - Technical Consultant for the Reboot - about the "MacHacks" used in this episode: https://rhettallain.com/2019/01/25/macgyver...e-notes-pliers/

He writes about following MacGyverisms and topics:
> Boosting car speed
> Chemistry demo – elephant toothpaste
> Liquid nitrogen in water
> Remote listening device
> Stop a car with paper
> Yaghi Antenna
> Over inflate tire
> Elephant toothpaste version 2

As usual, he also posted some videos to go along with.
