I'm loving Mattie Weber. Even Lucas Till acts more "mature" now, what I expect of Macgyver. I'm still having issues with Jack Dalton being in every episode, but starting to accept it.

Normally CBS won't release to web site until after midnight but as if 10:00 MST I was able to watch it.

Enjoyed the episode.

Oh this looks like the prelude to the Hawaii 5-0 crossover.

I don't get why they couldn't have made Thorton like Matty instead of getting rid of her and breaking the MacGyver formula.

I was thinking about this last night and it seems like the only resemblance of the original MacGyver is the character names. None of the original canon has been followed and almost nothing has been transferred from the original show except for the character names, but the characters themselves are still totally different, completely new unfamiliar characters with familiar names dropped on top.

Imagine if Star Wars did a new movie/reboot which changed their characters and made Luke Skywalker Han's co-pilot with Chewbacca as a bounty hunter looking for the scoundrel smuggler known as Yoda. Fans would go off their nut.

Even most of the worst failed reboot attempts have at least kept within the framework of the established canon, sure they've tried to change the genre - most noticeably Dukes of Hazard and Starsky and Hutch tried to go more comedy than action and failed, but they kept the characters and premise in tact.

I just don't get how you can claim to be trying to honor the original and completely ignore the whole damn 30 years of canon from said original.

I actually really enjoyed this one. It gave me that strange creepy vibe that I used to feel with the darker Dr. Zito, and Murdoc episodes. The MacGyverisms felt fresh while still feeling like things we would have encountered in the origianl series. The intro at phoenix was different but actually made me laugh. I had a good time vegging out on the sofa tonight with this one. thumbup.gif

Another well filmed episode! Started out gr8, and as a very compelling thriller. The script faded at the end though. Matty's shtick is now officially annoying. Her tone, facial expressions, and constant, uneasy 'rank pulling' detract from the whole MacGyver Modus Operandi of footloose and fancy freelancing. She's more like a den mother keeping her pups in line, rather than a seasoned field operative going with the flow, & knowing what it takes for personnel to carry out missions in that particular sector of employment.

I haven't seen the Episode yet. But I wonder whey they deemed it necessary to add tension by bringing Matty in and making her doubt MacGyver's (or the team's) skills. Yes, of Course any Change in a Team Needs some adjustement and they've said again and again that the reboot is about the Team and not just about the Story. But I still think any Tension should come due to the plot and the villains, not due to main cast members Problems with each other.

There are other Shows to serve this Soap-opera-drama-stuff if you're so inclined; I don't feel a Show like MacGyver Needs that.

(don't mind my weird style of writing; I'm sitting at my Dad's Computer laugh.gif)

I don't think Sandrine Holt could pull this off. Besides, having her act like Matty would be "out of canon" as you say.

I get what you are saying..... I'm disappointed that they are not following canon. But I'm trying to be open minded.... But I would prefer that they follow canon more.

I'm not used to Jack Dalton being in every episode. I'm used to Bruce McGill's ne'er do well thing..... and once a year. Having trouble accepting George Eads in the part, especially since he is maybe ten years older than Lucas Till..... not the same age as in the original.

Great episode but not properly clearing the rooms when they entered the apartment used by the killer to watch the victim was a big no no for Jack. I think it's another example of sloppy writing, instead of working plausible scenarios they make the character dumber to fit their narrative.
It's starting to get old especially considering that overall the episodes are often good or more then good (except for these blemishes of course)

This was a solid episode. I enjoyed the darker tone. Reminded me a bit of "Prometheus" from the original series, in terms of it's tone and setting.

I was looking forward to seeing this one because I really like the movie 'Zodiac'. Using that old unsolved case drew me in and made it a little more exciting. Overall a good episode, but certain things, like when they raided the house, they used regular police officers with Jack leading the way. It would'nt happoen that way. They would have used a swat team for that.
Enjoyed it. I guess they're off to Hawaii next.

I liked this episode. It still lacks a certain something, though.

It looks like they want the new boss to stay. But it's hard to care about a tragedy in a new characters life they just introduced. So far, to me she's still the new boss that barks orders and gives weird pet names to MacGyver (Blondie, Paperclip Boy etc.).

Yes, what's up with that? Is it suppose to be humor to the target audience? To me that's entering snide, condescending b**c* territory. In real life, when a boss has such disrespect .... it's time for immediate change - one way or another.

To be honest, I found "Paperclip Boy" (Episode 13, I think?) quite funny. She was calling him out for fiddling around instead of listening (which he did anyway, of course but as boss, you don't want your employees looking like you're not paying attention).

"Baby Einstein" was pretty condescending, though. What, you're calling someone out for being intelligent and observant? I'm pretty sure that even if she wasn't his boss, he wouldn't start calling her "Shortie" or something like that blink.gif

It's things like that which annoy me. The original show promoted intellegence - can't say I've seen that in this series.

To be honest the new boss seems like a school yard bullie and is the epitome of whats often refered to as "short person syndrome".

Either way it's a negative vibe I don't like.

But I'm clearly in the minority judging from Fridays ratings of first place for MacGyver. So pandering to the masses is obviously working for them.

New or old boss surely the great episodes that the chemistry between the original MacGyver and Pete gave us are far far from being even barely matched.
And looking closely there isn't any character that gives off the same good vibe of genuine friendship and mutual respect that Mac and Pete had, not even Jack or Bozer that are supposed to be long time friends.

In the end I think the main problem of this series is being named MacGyver, it's impossible to not constantly compare it to the original and criticise it accordingly.

I don't think her "baby Einstein" comment was really meant to be critical of his intelligence. I think she was just still not comfortable with his unorthodox improvisational style, and she finds it frustrating at times. Putting myself in her shoes, I can see where she's coming from, to be honest. Mattie doesn't have any history with Mac, so she just sees a guy who doesn't really play by the rules and, in her mind, that's an unnecessary risk. As the person in charge, it's understandable that she would find his approach irritating. By the end of the episode, though, she seemed to have gain some respect for the way he does things. I suspect that as the show goes on, Mattie will warm to Mac even more as she realizes that, more often than not, his approach works.

I think part of the problem is that we tend to compare this directly to original series, and since Mac and Pete got along great in that, we automatically think Mac and his boss in this reboot should get along great, but the circumstances are very different. We're seeing the START of their relationship here, whereas in the original, we saw them after they had already earned each others' respect. By the end of this season, or certainly in season 2, I think Mattie and Mac will have quite a good relationship.

Extremely creepy episode Till is honestly growing into the role nicely (though his hair is far to short but oh well) Matty is warming on me but there is still something off about her Bowser is actually becoming far less annoying can't they get rid of maddy and let him be the exposition guy...

Riley is ok Jack is ok

Great macgyverisms though.

Negatives

I miss the voice overs I really do.

Actually saw this one. And it still did nothing for me. I actually found Secret of Parker House more intense than this.

I just don't feel the thrill. Very formulaic making it predictable. And the MacGyverisms are a little too convenient in terms of what happens to be lying around. Jack continues to be the thorn in my side

This episode was more my kind of speed. Dark, moody, thrillerish. I guess we went into Lesson In Evil territory. This was the darkest episode so far and with a great nod to one of the most interesting murder cases in history: the Zodiac killer. I was thinking during the episode: would Dr. Zito be the Zodiac killer? Maybe it wouldn't make sense since he was based on Hannibal Lecter. But they changed everything else so far, so why not?

I kinda like the pop culture references we've had so far. These guys seem to like what I like: Iron Maiden, Die Hard, Se7en, serial killers... And I do mean the cases for all clarity. I did some reading in his case before, I never liked the movie though. Too long and too talky. But sometimes unsolved cases are very interesting.

Now about Matty... This was only her second episode and I didn't mind it was about her. What I don't like is that she's trying to undermine Mac's skills. When she barked at him when he was trying to get that footprint, I wished he said: 'I don't need to help you. I can simply go.' She doesn't like the way he works, then let him go. Also the nicknames and looking down upon him, is not working. That is something that would've never been done in the original. Nobody would've called Mac "Blondie" or Pete "fatso" or Jack "flyboy", flyboy is not so bad, but there was too much respect for that. There's plenty of words to address Matty as well that could hurt her deep inside and she wouldn't like it either. Unless this is now because there are deeper issues that are going to be addressed in later episodes.

I also agree with what was said here on Patricia. Why not have that cold-hearted b*tch thaw and gradually warm up to the rest of the team? As it usually does, the mutual respect grows over the course of the years just like Magnum and Higgins or simply had the respect from the start like Mac and Pete?

And for the record @DXS: George Eads is not ten years older than Lucas Till. He's 23 years older than him. Eads is 51 years old while Till is 28. He could've been his father. Maybe that makes it even more weirder. I don't know if Pete was considered an old man, but he wasn't much older then Eads.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

(...) Anyway, MIT has created a tool to use wifi to see through walls. Note, this show came out before that. I’m not saying MIT based that wifi thing on this episodes. I’m just sayin.
