I just saw an ad on TV for this tape. Looks like it's been out for awhile and the MacGyver reference on Wiki piqued my interest. Has anybody tried it yet for some around the house macgyverisms?

Gorilla Tape was featured in Popular Science's "Best of What's New 2006", which commented on the product, "Oh, what MacGyver could have done with the new Gorilla Tape in place of his beloved gray stuff."[

No, I've thought about buying some but I rarely use tape other than clear shipping, electrical tape and masking tape. I prefer to fix things the right way and tape (like hillbilly bungee cords) usually doesn't cut it.

Plus I use to use their other product all the time until I learned it isn''t good for very much, and that makes me skeptical of it.

I've been wanting to get my hands on a roll of that stuff since I first found it a few years back but they don't sell it, or ship it here.

Posted by: Wheeljack 16 June 2014 - 08:57 AM
Can't order it through amazon US? I use to order from amazon UK all the time for thing we don't have here.

No. It says it can't be shipped to my location.

Oh for crying out loud, how stupid! I think they pull rules out of their rear end, that's just dumb. Do they think you might commit a crime with tape? Maybe terrorize girls with long hair or use it to post signs with bad stuff about your govornment? Good grief. If you really want a roll of this pm me, I'm always shipping stuff around the world from ebay.

This is available from several stockists in South Africa.

Posted by: KiwiTek 16 June 2014 - 10:59 PM
have you tried it?

Posted by: denizen 16 June 2014 - 11:24 PM
Strangely no. But after reading about it now again, I think I'll stop by a local store and pick one up later. biggrin.gif

I'll tie up my mother in law and see how it works. laugh.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 17 June 2014 - 06:58 AM
Lol Denizen. I just got some at the Home Depot. I wandered around for 15 minutes trying to find it and then had to ask an employee. Shee said 'so you want some 'ape tape' do ya? Guess where they had it stashed? In the paint section of all places. unsure.gif

Anyway, it's priced right, a lot cheaper than 3M duct tape, and comes in 5 different sized packages with varying widths/lengths. Now I just need a project to test it and see if it meets their advert hype .... think I'll try stringing up the neighbor whose been dumping his lawn clippings into the shady corner of my property again. duct.gif

Posted by: KiwiTek 17 June 2014 - 12:19 PM
Try it on some rough surfaces and see how it does. wink.gif

Blablabla, get to steppin and tape something already! lol Go ahead and tape up the neighbor, see if you can actually tape their mouth shut for real. tongue.gif You always see that in movies and tv but it wouldn't actually work unless the person just happed to have no saliva. Or didn't sweat. Heh.

Posted by: denizen 17 June 2014 - 10:24 PM
roller.gif You guys are funny. Well they are keeping it in the paint section at my local store too but have still not had the chance to get one. Been a little crazy to say the least.

Yup, let us know how it works, Joe. Looks like very cool stuff. If I don't get the chance to pick one up this week, will definitely drop by on the weekend to get one.

Posted by: Joe SAKic 19 June 2014 - 05:33 PM
It's really tacky and works at least as well as the consumer duct tapes that I've used and am most familiar with. I couldn't catch up with the neighbor so I strung a pair of 20lb weights up in the maple tree this afternoon and while I mowed the lawn. An hour later, they were still hanging around. So for a preliminary tensile strength and sticktoitiveness test, the ape tape seems to have made a passing grade. duct.gif

Posted by: denizen 19 June 2014 - 09:25 PM
laugh.gif That's brilliant! Gotta get me some!!

At least we know this could work on the neighbour so no concerns in case he tries to break free. biggrin.gif

Don't push your luck, Joe. Hopefully the next pic wont have you taping your lawn mower to the tree. Although it could be pretty good PR work for Gorilla Glue roller.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 21 June 2014 - 04:51 AM
Haha, I was thinking of maybe trying an 'apetape bridge' a la what mythbusters designed with duct tape once upon a time.

Posted by: denizen 21 June 2014 - 01:34 PM
Sheesh! That's incredible!

Posted by: Wheeljack 21 June 2014 - 08:03 PM
Okaaaaay, that's quite a test there, holy monkey. I noticed you said consumer duct tape, that got me thinking back to my old job. The duct tape we got from the heating & air conditioning supply store was much stronger than the stuff you got in the hardware, even better than 3M or brand names. I saw military duct tape for sale once, I wonder how that compares.

Posted by: denizen 22 June 2014 - 06:22 AM
Well today I decided to go to my local hardware store and purchase a roll of Ape Tape. Wow! Pretty tough stuff! For my first try, decided to use it on my old couch which had a tear in it.

Not exactly what its used for but it works like a charm. The smooth outer layer works as a great surface guard and the sticky bottom binds really well.

I can see me using it for a number of things. Quite happy with my Gorilla Tape! biggrin.gif

Posted by: denizen 24 June 2014 - 09:07 PM
Decided to visit another hardware store yesterday where they had a full range of Gorilla Glue/Tape products.

Decided to buy a roll of Camo tape & Clear tape too. Never know what you can use em for. Love the Camo one. Looks amazing.

Their glue products also look very good. They have super glue gel, wood glue, a standard glue which happens to be 100% waterproof & epoxy.

Posted by: Joe SAKic 25 June 2014 - 03:46 AM
The camo would come in handy when Murdoc is in pursuit and to help build a quick lean-to or trap in the bush. whistle.gif I didn't see any of that at Home Depot though - will have to check some of the other stores. Here's a link that compares their tape products ...

That's great. Haven't seen that comparison page before. Their products are good. Definitely live up to their reputation. As for Gorilla Tape itself, definitely stronger than duct tape for sure.

Posted by: denizen 26 June 2014 - 09:27 PM
I will have to put that Gorilla Tape to some good use this weekend. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do? biggrin.gif

It's the worst thing when nothing is broke an you have the stuff to fix it!

Should I stick to my original plan of tying up my mother in law? laugh.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 28 June 2014 - 02:42 AM
It's actually that spontaneous-impromptu-fill-a-void need at that last possible moment that I really like about the product(s). It's always sort of a MacGyver-like, if only in a diy and less urgent sort of way.

Instead of tying your MiL up with tape which might present extra problems once she works free, how about engineering a nice gorilla tape plank and having her be the first to test/walk it out!? w00t.gif whistle.gif tongue.gif

Posted by: denizen 28 June 2014 - 07:43 AM
laugh.gif Tempting...been checking out that video on how to make your own wallet. Might try that!

Does it stick to skin? wink.gif

Posted by: denizen 1 January 2015 - 09:39 PM
Sticks to anything! But it aint superglue. Just water resistant so very durable to use.

I have to say that I have ben using my ape tape recently. More for repairing most of the toys my son breaks. biggrin.gif

Every time we buy him something, we usually estimate a lifetime before it meets its proverbial maker. And since its a common occurrence, the ape always wins!

Great tape! Any tape that can hold 20 lb dumbells is good in my book. My wife bought a roll and I'm really "attached" to it LOL!! duct.gif

Posted by: Danjo1 26 September 2016 - 11:07 AM
I always carry some around with me rolled flat. Best Duct tape ever.

Posted by: denizen 26 September 2016 - 08:09 PM
Good to know. And a hearty welcome to the forums Danjo1. smile.gif

Welcome aboard! I do the same....it's better than a Swiss Card for getting out of a jam!

I've just spotted this thread. I've had a roll of Gorilla tape for some time, it's good that it's black when you want to mend a black object. My duct tape is the usual grey. It seems really strong and is self supporting as a surface esp. when stuck to itself back to back as it were. I get it out when we need something really strong - I know I mended the hole in an old water butt with it when we wanted to re-purpose it, but I can't think of what else I've done with it - but it's always worked when I've needed it. Falls into my category of 'Good stuff'.

Posted by: denizen 28 September 2016 - 01:14 AM
Ape tape is the best! I have 3 rolls of it at home, Thick black roll, clear & camo.

Love it. Most of it though has been used to fix my sons broken toys! biggrin.gif

Ive used it for a broken dustbin, MacGyvered my broken belt. biggrin.gif

My son has been trying to learn on my 40 year old guitar and it's old pvc bag was getting a bit worse for wear. A big tear in the fabric and the handles nearly completely parted on both ends - one totally off. I deployed the gorilla tape on the job, it will be interesting to see how it lasts as a repair. Pity the bag was dark red and the tape black though.

Posted by: Barry Rowland 3 October 2016 - 04:22 PM
Honestly Maclover, probably will outlive all of us! I've used it for all kinds of fixes and creations, and it just keeps going on! thumbsup.gif

Posted by: Joe SAKic 3 October 2016 - 06:15 PM
Apparently the Gorilla Glue is every bit as good as their tape product. I just bought some to secure foam board insulation around the foundation of the garage, so I won't be able to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down til spring.

However, the hardware store people are telling me that it is flying off the shelves with contractors leading the purchasing charge. So .... if they are using it as there 'go to adhesive" .... then that should tell you all you really need to know .... because there are dozens of brands of this kind of goop on the shelves these days and to choose from.

So, if you have a glue job in your near future ..... you might want to check out the gorilla! But do read the fine print first and to see that it is well suited for your specific job task.

Posted by: denizen 3 October 2016 - 08:25 PM
I wholeheartedly agree with you Joe. I got me some Gorilla Glue and its very good.

Posted by: Barry Rowland 4 October 2016 - 04:33 AM
I've had the same experience with it. It really adheres! My son picked up a roll of T Rex tape that does a fantastic job, too!

I haven't used actual "Gorilla Tape" yet, but people have been using duct tape and 100 mile per hour tape for a very long time to do everything. I always have some around the house, in the truck and at the shop.

I have heard story of a drunk coming to, duct taped to the side of a outhouse, after a wild night at a weekend music festival. Of course you should believe everything you hear.

Duct tape is like The Force, it has a light side and a dark side and it binds the universe together.

Posted by: Mr Duct Tape 17 December 2016 - 07:45 AM
I use it all the time. It's a great tool, and we have to thank Mac for showing us the true force of duct tape.

this gorilla tape seems to be very good, although a bit expensive, no?

Posted by: Maclover 17 December 2016 - 02:13 PM
I was using my gorilla tape yesterday to fashion an old plastic dustbin into a water-tight place to put the extension leads for the outdoor christmas lights into. The gorilla tape has blocked some old holes and fastened the lid shut to stop it blowing off.

Is it just me or are they selling their products for more now? Sheesh, wanted to get another roll of clear Gorilla tape and it cost around $20!

Posted by: Maclover 3 July 2018 - 10:53 PM
denizen - I completely agree - I bought a new roll of plain black the other day and was astonished when it was nearly £6 and that was from a market stall. I don't recall paying that much for my first roll.

Posted by: denizen 4 July 2018 - 03:29 AM
Yup. Price has definitely gone up. It's good stuff but at the end of the day you have to ask yourself if its really worth the cost.
