There will be some purists who will say ?the reboot did everything wrong?

And maybe some who will say the reboot improved on the original in every way (Peter lenkov?s mom I am guessing)

But for me here is my list

Let?s get the wrong stuff out of the way first


The whole idea of a Team: the show is called Macgyver and it should be about Macgyver I don?t care about any ops done by anyone but Macgyver

The first name: the fact that Angus was used so often in the reboot compared to the original pissed me off. Mac should hate his first name period? I almost blame the 2003 sequel pilot on the whole ?well maybe the character can use his first name occasionally? but in all honesty Angus should of never been mentioned or if it is mentioned it should be a villain trying to take Mac off his game

Helman was underused: michal des Barres is an amazing actor and a treasure and can do sick and sadistic better then anyone the battle between him and Mac should of been epic

A few too many nods and winks to the original show that didn?t go anywhere: my fourth and final complaint is I felt especially in the first season they did a wink to a character that went nowhere Dr Zito for example or Patricia Thornton? if you use a name from the original show it should be well similar to the character from that show


Now with that out of the way what did it do right

Mac as a secret agent again: look I love an episode every once in a while where mac finds trouble but the first season he was a spy and a good one and by season 7 he was doing intelligence work in only three of the episodes that I can recall? which yeah not my thing

The casting for the most part: look I am going to get heat for this but if new line cinema ever does do that Macgyver movie regardless of the time line Lucas Till should play Mac? he just did a fantastic job of taking the role making it his own and doing above what was expected of him?. I also love David Dastmalchian as murdoc? Tristan Mays, and Meredith Eaton are all fantastic


The macgyverisms: from stuff borrowed from the original show to stuff with cellphones fantastic stuff all around

I love Mac as a spy. The first season of the original was definitely my favorite with Pete and DXS. I like your post!

Honestly, I don't think they got anything right.

They had a couple of good ideas which were poorly executed, but mostly they made a mockery of the whole MacGyver concept and turned MacGyver himself into an arrogant annoying nerd who talks down to everyone as he over-explains everything to show how much smarter he is than everyone else.

That and turning the gender-swapped Pete Thornton into a traitor, which I consider a middle finger to every fan of the original, were my two biggest peeves, but in general, the whole show was just CSI/NCIS with character names dropped in from MacGyver. None of them had the slightest resemblance to their original names-sakes.

It was just a very poorly executed money grab by CBS and from what I understand, the creator as well.

if you google search for MacGyver now you get lots of stuff about the reboot so it's not only made a mockery of the original but it's also pushed it down into the sewers of history.

That one still irks me.

Lenkov has a thing about turning "good" female characters into villains and/or traitors for no reason besides thinking it's a big plot twist.

It's possible that the actress wanted out after her contract was up, and that they couldn't bring her back as a recurring (e.g. to redeem herself). But if the storyline had always been intended like this, making her into a traitor was the biggest mistake of the Reboot IMO. One that turned a lot of OG fans away to never come back and giving the show another chance.

It would have been so easy to switch the names and make Webber the traitor, being replaced by Thornton. That would have also honored the OG show.

Agreed something I commented on in my original post again Mattie Webber in the reboot was essentially like Thornton in the original show

Heck if we look at the murdoc episodes of the original series she goes through the exact same arc as Pete (from thinking Mac?s way is wrong to realizing he is their best agent period)


I almost wish if they do a movie not that I want a third timeline but maybe having Webber?s real name be Thornton or something


I do think people are a little harsh on Till?s performance because even RDa had a slight know it allness to his performance in some episodes ?.


But like I said I love it all even the weird sequel series that only has a pilot and no one talks about lol
