It does seem that they've left the door open just a crack for a possible new series/continuation, if Phoenix ceases to perform government-related missions and pursues only private ones.

Mac was understandably horrified that he'd been forced to fire a gun. But in the Army, he had no choice in the matter (if only for weapons qualification on the range).

while the episode wasn't perfect, and fits better as season than as series finale, but it was far from bad. I had initially expected a cliffhanger and a lot more plot holes, so I'm satisfied enough.

still wouldn't mind another season, though tongue.gif

Assuming (alternately) that Phoenix was dissolved, some alternate career options might be:

Mac is hired by the United Nations to help developing nations with their infrastructure/water/food/etc. concerns. Despite a bout with malaria, he soldiers on.

Matty runs for US Congress and is elected on the "Be a sport - vote for short" ticket. She later considers a run for the Presidency.

Riley is hired by Google, but gets bored with the job and finds that hacking is much more fun and rewarding.

Bozer decides to try Hollywood. After many tries, he ends up on "The Batchelor", and eventually hosts "Jeopardy".

Russ retires to Italy and runs a profitable wine tasting resort and vineyard.

OK, just a shot in the dark tongue.gif

It wasn't the firing of the gun that worried him it was that he carried out the order to kill someone - although in this case it was only a mannequin, but still, he followed the order and shot it dead.

So the government is just gonna let them tuck tail and run, with all the secrets they know and what they invested? It seems they are in a with or against the government situation soon anyway.

This reminds me of when Christopher Nolan's Batman ended with the segway for a Robin series that we never got and isn't on the horizon either. Honestly it would have been better ended, given what we know now, if he left the organization, just like he did in the original. They added things but they should have "took out" that last minute decision at the end.

Is this good or bad? Did it win Friday night or the timeslot?

And what do they replace those 5 minutes with? Remember they only had 3 weeks to try and change it from a season finale to a series finale with cast and crew already dispersed back to their home states so no way to film new scenes.

It won the 8pm timeslot in viewers, but not in demo.

But for CBS, it doesn't matter as much how shows do in comparison to other networks. They have to do well within their own network and compared to all current scripted shows on CBS (about 24 this season), MacGyver ranks on Ranks 15 or 16. So not too well but not a complete failure.

I write more on that stuff on my weekly blog posts: https://dashboardonfire.wordpress.com/

But I don't get that idea of comparison. Obviously something has to be a winner, an also-ran, and a loser. If it wasn't Mac it would be something else. Just the night or the timeslot sounds better to me.

Here we go...for the last time?

-Missing people are always found in the desert. Can't believe they didn't check there first.

-Abducted by aliens near the Staples Center? Well, that is the home of the Lakers, and LeBron James is in the new SpaceJam.

-Does Mac do their laundry? I get why Desi's speakeasy outfit is there, but why were Bozer and Riley's just handy?

-Mac having a cardboard cutout collection of various nerds is super on-brand for a guy who wrote songs about epidemiologists.

-They look like cat-burglars in these matching PJs.

-Watching Die Hard. Somewhere Jack wipes away a solitary tear and smiles.

-Mac also has a secret room. I now believe every team member must have a secret room in their house.

-Bozer's right, "Mac Cave" sounds way cooler.

-I bet Brooklyn(ne) & Sara(h) as a duo have played guitar and sung before a small crowd in a coffee shop a time or two.

-Are we sure Jennifer Poole isn't Patricia Thornton's sister? There's a resemblance.

-Bozer acting very "season 1" so far in this episode.

-So what was the point of the Speakeasy mission and tagging Cresta?

-Bozer's last minute accent and Russ as the "exuberant American." I laughed.

-These "government officials" look more like an updated version of Al Bundy's "No Ma'am" group from "Married with Children."

-Those fireworks didn't look like they went off at "10 miles up."

-Love Mac stepping aside for Riley to deliver a haymaker to Marcato.

-"Season 5" Bozer returns with a solution to the nanobot problem.

-One last 'round the fire chat. Wish there would have been more of these.

-Nanobot free. Good acting in this scene.

-Shuffling off the government coil.

-LMAO. They credited the guy Russ got into an argument with at the military celebration as "Dad Bod."

I agree with Dashboard, this was pretty good as a season finale, but falls a bit short for obvious reasons as a series finale. Ultimately, that's a darn shame as I really would have liked to see Phoenix operating completely out from under the auspices or control of any agency but themselves. Could have been a lot of good "random adventure" episodes to come from that. I did see that finding that Incan treasure that Russ was after would have been part of a season 6. That could have been fun, but alas...I guess there's still a glimmer of hope, but with CBS owning the rights, I just don't see anything coming of the #SaveMacGyver campaign, sadly.

I'm no expert in laundry, but I'm pretty sure that Desi's dress needs to be handwashed anyway.

And wouldn't Mac's and Riley's outfit having been dissected CSI-style to find out where they've been held? Checking for blood, tissue, hair, pollen and the like? Maybe I''ve been watching too much CSI lately tongue.gif

Funny how Desi is surprised about not knowing. I remember Mac talking about his secret escape in episode 2x12. But when Desi took over for Jack's security, shouldn't she have known?

After the preview trailer, some fans actually thought it's her.

I have to admit I still have no clue laugh.gif

I wouldn't have minded either. Similar to "Scorpion", I guess.

But weren't they already independent at the beginning of Season 4 because they had been defunded and shut down? hmm.bmp

In the original series, wasn't Phoenix pretty much an independent organization?

Posted by: real_ness 3 May 2021 - 03:25 AM
I'd say the time limit for this to be picked up somehow is about a year. I don't see this level of activism and conversation to go on for a year for any service to take notice.

Not pretty much, it was completely independent.

Makes you wonder how much of Season 5 was changed due to CBS' wishes and demands...

I.e. no flashbacks of a person that doesn't want anything to do with the series & plain as day walked away from it.

This where reality is at odds with fantasy

So i finally watched the series finale for my bday yesterday and ?

It doesn?t work as a series finale it make me want more?

Honestly my thoughts on the series overall is this

I loved the original series as a kid? as someone with Adhd this is one of my hyperfocuses that when i heard the reboot was happening i literally was jumping up and down? then as the show progressed i realized sadly it was more Mac and team then just Macgyver?

However Lucas Till was brilliant as Macgyver and if i win the lottery or make enough money to finance a film or show (and i get Lee and Henry?s approval) lucas will be who i cast as Macgyver i get he loves the role and took it seriously to me he is the Timothy Dalton on the Macgyver franchise he isn't as popular as the guy before him (or guys as technically Jared Paladacki played A macgyver and had the show picked up would of been the Roger Moore of the macgyver franchise) but he gave it his all and for that i think We all should respect him.

I am 95% sure i did a what i like and what i didnt like about the series and one day i plan on doing a full macgyver retrospective starting with season 1 of the original - season 5 of the reboot because in watching the two tv movies (what i do every thanksgiving) i have plenty to say about the original show as well..

Over all i am sad it ended and sad that now the only bit of macgyver content i havent consumed is the musical, and the two novels one i own and the on ice one that is impossible to find.

Do i hope it will take less then 20 years for a new Macgyver to come yeah as i believe Macgyver is the real answer to who is the American James Bond, i also believe there will be a new show or film coming at some point. But to fans around the world though i had nothing to do with the show thanks to everyone here from when we were rumoring on casting (and i was pushing the guy from the Will Snipes action show the gambler) too the final episode i enjoyed the reviews the debates the discussion the fan theories all of it
