Still no need to make a massive 'dog & pony show' out of the issuance of a single license though. sad.gif

Not when it turns out the culling of the particular animal will in fact help increase the population of the species that's for sure.

If they were going to kill one of the younger ones, just for the sake of it, then that would be a different matter. But this appears to be some innovative thinking by someone.

Here's an interesting bit of trivia.

The lady that played Kate in this episode (Cecelia Hart) is married to James Earl Jones.

It really depends whom this extra, global publicity lights a fire under .... or lightbulb over - doesn't it? I mean on the downside it tells a prospective trophy hunter or rhino horn end-user, that their quarry is still definitely attainable for a cost.

QUOTE (Joe SAKic @ 19 January 2014 - 04:13 AM)
The Rhino is in Namibia, isn't it? Therefore the Namibian Government authorizes (or not) the availability of all non-resident licenses. I could care less what happens to the Rhino after it's dead, my major concern is that there are licenses issued at all for a critically endangered species. That's an outrage! What neanderthals do that in this day & age?

On the USA side, I'm disappointed about the auction style sale of this rare license. Does the Namibian government get a percentage of the hammer price? If so what do they do with this extra booty .... rush it directly into poaching defence/control/eradication ? What tax percentage does Uncle Sam take from this sale and where exactly does that chunk of change filter into?

Nope, the crisis is in South africa, Joe.

I'm confused. Does the South African government control the Namibian issuance of Black Rhino licenses? Or is that particular Rhino of South African origin and being relocated to Namibian territory for said auctioned hunt?

From what I can gather, Neither.

South Africa seems to have nothing to do with the Namibia story - other than to say that most Black Rhino's are found in South Africa and they, therefore, are at the front of the fight to save them. But other than that the Namibia is a separate story.

While I think the organizer hearts were in the right place, the idea was ill-conceived.

I can't help wondering what the people who use or sell the horns think they are going to do when the last 1000 Rhinos have been killed off. If these guys were really smart, they'd start breeding and farming them to ensure their profit source into the future.

The biggest problem with poachers is that most of them are unemployed and uneducated. They have families to feed and are willing to risk it all for the money.

Vietnam in particular hold a huge demand for the horns because they seem to think it has some form of incredible medicinal purposes. They are of course willing to pay top dollar for it. Now dont get me wrong. When i say Vietnam, I am not accusing the entire population of this act. Just a select few.

Further to the rhino, I have seen open documentaries on other animals housed in cages that are used for illegal breeding, food or medicinal reasons. Its sick and there are no laws in those countries to uphold them.

Someone posted this article on my blog comments:

Despite the sad news, the article's last sentence offers a glimmer of hope.

Its a terrible reality and little that is done about it. More need to get involved from a global point of view.

MacG.gif does not need rhino horn to prove his virility ... he has clip.JPG and duct.gif and matchs.JPG ... oh, and the occasional boxing.gif [punching bad guys] instead.

Not sure if it's been documented on this website yet or not but the SUV Mac is driving as he arrives at the Nabo ranch is a J60 Series Toyota Land Cruiser in Desert Beige(?) or Stardust Silver(?) ... can't quite tell on my screen and with the poor transfer quality. The Toyota name appears to have been removed or painted over on the front grill. This particular design was made between 1988-90, I believe.

For comparison(so technically Mac's Nabo Ride was an FJ62 series, the main visible difference between an FJ60 & an FJ62 is that the former has round headlights and the latter square headlights):

A very powerful episode! This is the second time I've seen in it in the last few months. I watched a TV clip on-line where RDA was being interviewed about it and he explained how the rhino that was killed and it's sounds were manufactured, but he still described it as "Horrific". This episode also showcases Mac's/RDA's love of animals. Not just the rhino scene, but when he first arrives and is driving looking at the animals as well as when he's talking to Kate on her porch and petting and feeding the chimp. In addition, when Mac is in Pete's office and says "I can't just go to Africa" it shows a maturity in his character.

According to World Animal Foundations latest poaching stats, the number of Black Rhinos worldwide is more than 6,487 (rhinos.org).

It seems that the Covid pandemic worked in favor of the Rhinos due to the pandemic restrictions making it difficult for syndicates to move rhino goods. Statistics suggest that Africa?s poaching rates dropped from 5.3% to 2.3% in 2021.
