Here is the conclusion/epilogue of this story. It's brief, but I modeled some elements of it after the Oklahoma City bomber, who really was arrested a mere two hours after the explosion when he was pulled over for having a missing license plate.

Don’t Forget Part Seven
Rated: PG (Conclusion)

Once The Phoenix Foundation building was considered clear and safe for re-entry, strict new security measures were immediately implemented requiring all inbound vehicles and persons to be subjected to intense searches that carefully examined everything, regardless of whether they were employees or not, not discriminating between them. It was a major annoyance and inconvenience, but most everyone involved with the building readily complied considering the instability of the current situation. After they were searched and allowed access to the building, MacGyver and Pete were in his office, pouring over the evidence.

“Lab results from our forensics team have returned on the samples taken from the bomb,” Pete said. “These boys used available substances such as diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate.” He paused and looked up from his report at MacGyver, peering over the rims of his reading glasses. “That’s an ingredient in fertilizer, isn’t it?” He asked.

MacGyver sighed and closed his eyes. “Yes, it is,” he said. “It’s also a powerful oxidizing agent used in explosives when combined with fuel oil, which sounds like exactly what they constructed their bomb out of according to your report, almost like an improvised explosive device. It makes sense. Even with a group as skilled as this, it’s still difficult to acquire explosives such as C-4, so they chose to create a homemade version instead.”

He shook his head, realizing that he had the knowledge to create such a bomb himself. The difference was how he used that knowledge, never using a bomb he made to intentionally kill anyone. His explosives were rigged usually to distract an enemy or free himself. Eddy and his fellow militiamen used that same knowledge with the intent to maim, kill, and destroy. Sometimes he wished no one had the recipe for such a bomb—even himself. It always had the potential to fall into the wrong hands and cause a lot of damage as a consequence.

“Well, homemade or not, our structural engineers ran a simulation on what would have happened had that bomb exploded, and the extent of damage we would have sustained to this building would have been catastrophic,” Pete said. “There were enough of those materials in the bomb to take out a large section of this building or cause it to collapse entirely. We’re very fortunate this never happened.”

“Yeah, well it still could in the future. What did you find on Eddy?” MacGyver asked.

Pete fished out another stack of reports and files on his desk. “Let’s see here…Edward Wozniac Junior,” he said, raising his eyebrows and glancing up at MacGyver. “Quite a name.” He returned to the information he had. “He’s an ex naval officer, honorably discharged if you can believe that. They claim he was a model soldier, that he was quiet and read a lot in his spare time, nothing to indicate such an extreme dislike for our government. No criminal record to speak of…”

“Until now,” MacGyver said.

Pete looked up at him again. “Right,” he said. “After that, there’s not much to report on him. By all accounts, he was just a nice, normal young man.”

“That means his operation is highly secretive,” MacGyver said. “How are we ever going to find their base, Pete? Where do we start looking?”

“We already have the FBI involved in trying to disband and prosecute these groups, and I’ve cooperated with them by passing everything I know about the incident here and this Eddy character to them. They’re looking, but it could take some time.”

MacGyver glanced at the small television set that Pete had in his office to keep him updated on the latest news. The images on the screen flickered rapidly, but he could see Eddy’s face in the coverage.

“Pete, look,” he said, turning up the volume.

“Sources close to the police department are unsure at this moment if this arrest is connected to the thwarted bombing attempt on The Phoenix Foundation building earlier today, but the man in custody, an Edward Wozniac Junior was spotted driving away from the scene. Police officers initially stopped him for having a burned out headlight, but they also discovered a concealed weapon in his possession,” the reporter said.

MacGyver and Pete exchanged looks. “Well, that was certainly fast,” Pete said, glancing at his watch. “Only hours after he planted the bomb, he’s apprehended, and for what seemed to be such a minor offense—a busted headlight, of all things.”

“Well, it’s been my experience that small errors in judgment have a way of tripping you up and getting you caught,” MacGyver said. “I guess he wasn’t as careful as he thought.”

“Now, we’ll be able to provide the police with all the evidence we have, linking the van rental, the explosives—everything to him.”

“Not to mention you have an eyewitness who was his kidnapping victim,” MacGyver said, grinning and pointing at himself. “I also know he murdered Russ Finley.”

“I guess no matter what he does now, he’s going to be incarcerated, possibly for life,” Pete said. “One small slip-up, one coincidental arrest, and he’s managed to uncover his entire plan. Maybe he’ll confess and tell them more about his militia group so that we can arrest them, too.”

“Ideally, that would happen, but I don’t know how much Eddy will be willing to divulge to police or what kind of deal he’ll want to make. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.”

“One thing is for sure—our building is far safer than it was hours ago with him removed from society,” Pete said.

“Yeah, we’ve got one of them, but we still have a long way to go before we’ve won,” MacGyver said.

Ghostdoll, if you like Mac's and Loth's then you must also download Beth's "Up a Long Ladder". I think you will like it as well.

Chick, great ending. Also, you are spot on about the chemicals involved. Ammonium nitrate is a main component of fertilizers and when mixed in the right ratio with diesel fuel will definitely explode. It will also explode if it catches fire and it burns with a pretty pink flame.

Ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel are common compounds. Anyone can get them. The reicpes for making bombs with them are readily availble. Its what you do with the knowledge that makes the difference.

Well done.

Like Grrl, I loved Mac's thoughts on the different applications of the same knowledge . . . pretty pink flame, huh? Suits the most aesthetic terrorist.

And thanks for the plug, Grrl! Your bribe will be forthcoming. biggrin.gif Ghostdoll, if you're collecting your fanfic in printed form, I have a pdf version of "Up a Long Ladder" that's printer-friendly, if you're interested. PM me if you want it.

Be sure also to look through the drabble thread -- Lothi has some really lovely ones there! Jackwabbit's done some great drabbles also, which are in standalone threads.

I really like the ending. It's so MacGyverish.

I can hear him say this in an episode. Sounded like Deep Cover or something.

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=14]I read this some time back and simply thought it was a very well written and researched story that could have easily been an episode of the series. I remembered how I enjoyed it and came back to read it again. This time through, I am struck by the similarity to recent events in our country. For some time there have been "preppers" who are convinced that everything is going to hell through a political downfall or invasion, or a major disaster, and only those who are watching for this to happed and are prepared to take up arms and protest what's theirs will survive. You also have bigots. Add to that the rise of the MAGA group when Trump took office and how much he played to their fears and beliefs and encouraged them, and you start having attacks on minority groups. and eventually the storming of the US Capitol building to reinstate what they felt was the only rightful leader. You have described a group in your story that is eerily like what we have lately experienced, even calling them a "militia". Back when you wrote this I'm sure we just thought, "Wow, that's an interesting villian for this story. Mac has fought against white militants, a press too eager to rush to judgment in highly publicized court cases, and that guns (and bombs) are not the answer. An anti government control militia fits right in." Deja vu (insert Twilight Zone theme music here). I'm sure you didn't intend it this way, but it's a bit spooky. You write extremely realistic characters! That makes it even more spooky, This could be out of todays news. I'm just glad that with a new president common sense is prevailing again. Or have these groups just gone back underground? Where's Mac when you need him? blink.gif
