"What are you so happy about Pete?" MacGyver said as he sat in front of his best friend's desk. "You look like you're about to burst."
Pete gave him a lopsided smile. "Well, I'm going on a much needed vacation, far, far away."
"Oh yeah? Where to?"
"It's a surprise."
MacGyver raised an eyebrow, but the curiosity was killing him. "A surprise?"
"Yup!"
Pete was too happy, MacGyver thought. What does he have up his sleeve? He did a quick check of Pete's desk trying to find some clue as to this "surprise".
"A surprise for...?"
"You, Mac."
"Me?" MacGyver said, taken aback. "Who's gonna keep an eye on things...?”
"Got it covered, Mac."
MacGyver raised both eyebrows. The older man was cleaning his office in a mad flurry, obviously excited about whatever this 'surprise' was. Pete knew that MacGyver would eventually figure it, mostly likely before they even leave. But, MacGyver didn't believe that was the reason for his friend's silence. Probably because he knew that whatever this vacation surprise was, MacGyver wouldn't want to go.
"It's not Hawaii, is it?"
"No, Mac."
It wasn't uncommon for them to go on vacation together. For both men, it helped keep their bond strong. Pete was not just MacGyver's best friend and boss, but he was also a father figure. He looked up to Pete. He also knew that Pete felt the same about him, seeing him as a son.
"Look, Mac. I'll give you a hint, but you have to promise me that you'll go."
"Just curious, why the need to have me go?"
"Well, it's a place I had always wanted to take Micheal. Kind of a father/son bonding trip. But, you know how Micheal feels about me." There was a touch a hurt in the man's voice, then he perked up. "So, I'm taking you instead. It'll be fun."
MacGyver understood and knew that this was important to Pete. Whatever it was, he was willing to endure. Just as long as there were cute women in bikinis.
"Alright, alright. You win Pete. I promise, I'll go." He said, raising his hands up in defeat. "So what's the surprise?"
Pete smiled again, fishing in a drawer. Holding some kind of black item, he placed it on MacGyver's head. With a look of forced patience on his face, MacGyver looked at his friend, who chuckled at the funny angle and MacGyver's spiky hair stuck up around the Mickey Mouse ears.
"They look great on you." Pete laughed.
MacGyver sat there, as calm as could be, but Pete knew that he wasn't happy with this idea.
"Come on Pete. That place is overcrowded..."
"Mac..."
"...expensive..."
"Mac..."
"...not to mention, hot..."
"MacGyver!"
"What Pete?"
"Everything's already booked. We leave this weekend. And you promised."
"Alright, alright."
Pete smiled, patting him on the shoulder as he walked passed him. "You'll have fun, I promise."
Pete left MacGyver sitting in his office, staring out the window in defeat, the mouse ears still on his head. "Oh man..."
